Man killed by grizzly bear at Yellowstone National Park

(CNN) -- A man was killed by a grizzly bear Wednesday morning at Yellowstone National Park, according to the National Park Service.

The visitor was hiking with his wife along the Wapiti Lake trail when he surprised a female bear with her cubs, the park service said. The bear attacked and fatally wounded the man in an attempt to defend her cubs. A group of nearby hikers called police after they heard the victim's wife crying for help.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

There have been no reports of bear encounters along or near the Wapiti Lake trail this season, park spokesman Al Nash said in the statement.

A bear warning sign was posted at the head of the trail because of known bear activity along access points.

All trails and back-country campsites have been closed until further notice. Park rangers are working to clear the area of all back-country users.

"It is extremely unfortunate that this couple's trip into the Yellowstone backcountry has ended in tragedy," said Dan Wenk, superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. "Our heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim as they work to cope with their loss."

This is the first bear-caused human fatality in Yellowstone since 1986, Nash said. Bear attacks are extremely rare. No visitors were injured by bears in the park in 2010.

Park visitors are advised to hike in groups of three or more people and to be alert for bears and make noise in blind spots. It is not known if the victim or his wife was carrying bear pepper spray at the time of the incident. Bear pepper spray has been effective in stopping aggressive bears.

This is the first human death caused by a grizzly in Yellowstone since 1986, officials say. The photo above is from 2010.

I wouldn't hike anywhere in Yosemite or in Alaska without a large caliber - or two - semi-automatic handgun, minimally.

Too bad guns are illegal in Yosemite - the bears have a distinct advantage.

A couple of these would have stopped it dead:

This story doesn't add up. It says his name is being witheld pending notification of family. Duh, his wife was there. I'd say she has been notified.

Clearly all the bears in that area should be immediately destroyed. Its all these pesky bears fault for getting in the way of hikers and even bringing their children to the area.

Lets all form a vigilante group called "Guys with Glocks" and take back Yosemite from the intruding bears.

Fuckin nature, who needs it?

You misunderstand.

When I go for a nature walk, I want to be safe(r) while doing so. If a Mama Bear charges me with full intent of killing me, I don't want to simply say "Oh gosh, I should have stayed home".

I always have been part of nature. One of the aspects of MY existence in nature is I am a tool maker and tool user. One of those tools is a Big Motherfucking Automatic Pistol that'll take down the biggest, angriest Mama Bear out there in Yosemite.

Because I like nature. And I want to take a walk there without getting killed.

How about the Mama bear that was born there, raises her children there and exists peacefully there because she and other animals are federally protected from tough guys carrying guns in a park especially designated by the POTUS to preserve wildlife.
There were signs along the trail that clearly stated the presence of grizzly bear. What dummy knowingly takes their wife into an area infested with them?

According to the article, the bear pepper spray seems to work well against aggressive bears. I understand that you and other guys love shooting wild animals at the first sign of an excuse, but if you really appreciate nature, you would know to avoid these scenarios altogether. We know you're tough with the Glock in your hand, but how tough are you without it? How smart are you with or without it?

OOOOhhhhhhh, that's really something to be proud of. A device for killing large wild animals that you have no business with. That's your idea of a tool? Why don't you see if it can hammer nails, while the barrel is facing you?

So do I, but I don't want to kill nature and I'm smart enough to not have to.

Oh...wait...no, I was born in Tokyo.

Close enough - still part of nature.

I get to defend myself against that Bad Guy; I get to defend myself against that Mama Bear.

Makes sense to me.

[the bear sprays have mixed results - I prefer fixed results]

[[the idea that some bear has some sort of priority in life is beyond silly]]

God damn, you are dumber than I thought. Let me put it in a way your intellect, or lack thereof, can understand.

Lets reverse the scenario. Someones breaks into your house. You try to defend your wife and kids by attacking the intruder. He pulls out a gun and shoots you in HIS self defense. Are you okay with that? There is no difference.

Bears don't have mortgages, property lines and so forth. They have their territory. They also don't have written laws, just the laws of nature. That law includes attacking anyone or anything that gets near their offspring.

I'm a gun owner, in fact I have a few, but unlike you, who can't wait to shoot something, I really hope I never have to use them, short of going to the range to keep sharp.

Attitudes like yours are going to cause all of us to lose our rights to gun ownership.

Even before guns were finally legalized in the parks, you wouldn't catch me walking in Grizzly territory without one. A LOT of people just packed them quietly in their packs, jackets, etc.

The most retarded thing ever is the attitude of some park people, though. Not too long ago some guy shot a Grizzly to death in Denali National Park with his handgun. Some park rangers called for his head afterwards, and dumbasses were saying that he poached the bear. Yeah, who the fuck poaches a bear with a .45 handgun from 10 feet away, and empties the clip? Face it, SOME of the folks who work at these parks and/or frequent them would much rather have a bear devour a human, than the other way around, all so they can tout their superior wilderness abilities in understanding Mother Nature.

See, you are changing your scenarios. That indicates how stupid your original asserion was. Your only defense (which is mighty weak) is to call name and make a bunch of baseless conclusions. For instance, I do not, nor have I ever owned a firearm.

Are you kidding? There's a thousand dumbasses out there who would do this as a challenge or because it's too difficult to conceal/explain a high powered rifle. You underestimate the idiocy of all the fucking rednecks that own guns. (See above posts).

And some could care less if the whole population of grizzly bear were wiped out because of dummies carrying guns that look for any excuse to kill a bear or some other wild animal, just to say they did.

just fyi some policy go figure

Yosemite National Park

Weapons/Firearms

Firearms
As of February 22, 2010, a new federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park.

It is the responsibility of visitors to understand and comply with all applicable state, local, and federal firearms laws before entering this park. As a starting point, visit the California Attorney General's website.

Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park; those places are marked with signs at all public entrances.

Discharging a firearm for any reason is illegal.

.
Other Weapons
The possession, use, or discharge of pepper spray (including bear spray), pellet guns, and BB guns in Yosemite National Park is prohibited.
.

Bears favored by 10.

Grizzly bear can smell and detect you long before you know it is there. You get within fifty feet of bear when bear charges. Grizzly bear can run at speeds up to 35 mph. You have to draw take aim hope like hell for a head shot on a charging bear intent on ripping your face off.

This aint no paper target waiting for you to find your sight alignment. Its almost 1,000 pounds of anger full of claws and teeth.
Good luck you will need it.

Ignore the sign at your own peril I think. Kind of like the ones at Great Falls warning about the chances of drowning, yet time and again some idiots wade into the Potomac.

No they wouldn't have. A 9mm pistol isn't anywhere near powerful enough to stop a charging bear. You want a rifle in .45-70 or something similar.

Grizzly bear kills hiker in Yellowstone national park - the first fatal attack in 25 years
A female grizzly bear has killed a hiker in Yellowstone National Park - the first fatal attack in 25 years.
The man, who has not yet been named, had been hiking with his wife around a mile-and-a-half from the start of the Wapiti Lake Trail in the park today when the mauling occurred.
Another group of hikers nearby heard the victim's wife crying out for help and used a cell phone to call park rangers for assistance.
The grizzly had been with her cubs at the time.
A National Park Service statement said the couple had inadvertently surprised the mother grizzly and her cubs, and in 'an attempt to defend a perceived threat to her cubs, the bear attacked and fatally wounded the man.'
The victim's identity and hometown have been withheld pending notification of other family members.
The bears remained at large following the attack.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances, but initial information indicated the mother bear behaved normally in defending her cubs and would not be killed as a result of her actions, park spokeswoman Linda Miller said.
Attacks by bears are extremely rare. No visitors were injured by bears in Yellowstone during all of last year, and Wednesday's incident marked the first bear-caused human death in the park since 1986, the Park Service said.
But a mother grizzly killed one man and injured two other people in an unusual night-time attack on sleeping campers just outside Yellowstone in Montana last July.
The bear involved in that incident was later trapped and destroyed because the attacks were considered to be unprovoked.
A bear warning sign is posted at Yellowstone's Wapiti Lake trailhead because it is an access point to the Pelican Valley area known for significant bear activity.
No bear encounters had been reported along or near that trail this season, the Park Service said.
'It is extremely unfortunate that this couple's trip into the Yellowstone backcountry has ended in tragedy,' Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk said.
The park's hiking trails are packed with visitors at this time of year. Officials warned hikers to stick to groups of three or more people, make lots of noise and carry bear pepper spray.

One properly place bullet will do the job or you could empty a magazine into one and it will still be coming. Depends.A large knife in a fight is useless, they are too powerful and muscular , they could decapitate you with one swipe.

The pathetically staged bear attack in an unnamed national park is a recreation of the infamous death of Pit Dernitz from Savage Man Savage Beast, and Climati’s classic use of cinéma vérité is also utilized by Schwartz in a desperate attempt to conceal all aspects that may expose his setup. Although the death scenes from Savage Man Savage Beast are also staged, Climati’s lifelong cinematographic training adds a professional edge to the deception.

In Faces of Death, the efforts to replicate these tactics are laughably bad, and only the most trusting individuals will believe the scenes are genuine. Also, Climati’s wise decision not to include sound while working with amateur actors is ignored by Schwartz, as the pathetic dialogue and delivery help to destroy any leftover credibility.

While backpacking through northern Alaska in the summer of 2007 I had a polar bear with an estimated weight of 550 pounds come after me. I pulled the pin on my can of counter assult bear spray and tried to sheild myself behind a large tree, when the bear was within 20 yards of me it suddenly turned and ran off! The polar bear repeated this charge three times and scared the hell out of me but each time it ran away at the last second.
When I returned to the trailhead I told my story to the park ranger that was parked there, thats when he informed me that I had encountered a Bi-Polar bear!

Why would anyone go into a national park that holds grizzley bears with a 9mm pistol? If you are going to carry with the intent of protecting yourself why would you not carry the right tool for the job. Something like a colt python in 44mag or .50 cal? The semi auto could jam and then the bear would fuck you in the ass before he ate you. You hit him with a .50 cal hollow point and you will at least get him to stop and think about what just happened while you re-set and draw down on him / her again for the final shot. Rookies!
