Original versus remake - which is better
Date: July 06, 2011 05:23PM

Since we have been on a music kick as of late, how about we compare songs and their subsequent remakes. Choose which one you prefer...

I always thought Devo was too weird to be taken seriously, but they did have some of the more-interesting "new wave" songs of the 80s....

But then Fu Manchu covers it 90s stoner-metal style, complete with cowbell!

Pinhead, no biggie but your "remake" terminology is sticking in my craw a mite.

Movies have "remakes." But when original songs are redone, it's usually a "cover" is it not?

Anywho, "Jet Airliner" is kind of an interesting case. Steve Miller heard the unreleased Paul Pena original, and brought out his version in 1977. The royalties from the song were a major source of income for Pena for the rest of his life. The Pena album with "Jet Airliner" was not released until 2000 because of contractual issues.

Some people prefer the slower, bluesy orginal. To my ear, Steve Miller took a very good song and turned it into a pop classic.

Classic 60s garage rock/psychedelia, The Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men". This song defines a genre.

...then Ozzy remade it almost 30 years later, and it's a fucking great doom-metal cover

It has a certain raw power that Miller's version lacks, but my whitebread soul prefers Miller's clean, tight, upbeat sound.

Townes Van Zandt's version of his song Pancho And Lefty is much better than the Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard version. Much more melancholy

I always find it funny when a death metal band covers hair metal or classic rock. Six Feet Under does a lot of covers - TNT, Back in Black, Blackout (Scorpions cover) are just a few.

Perfect example of how good production can make a forgettable hippie musical meditation into a classic.

I never realized Grace Slick was once good-looking, and for a hippy, she even looks hygienic.
