Northern accents sounds weirder to me than southern ones do...

I notice if Im in a group of people, and I hear some southern accents, it sounds more neutral or easier to understand or like closer to General American.(unless they're putting on a Forrest Gump or something) But if i hear some thick ny/nj accent or Chicago or Philadelphia, it really stands out like a sore thumb for me. Why is it people make a big deal out of southern accents, when northern ones are so much thicker?

Northern accents tend to be more localized, New York, Philly, Baltimore, etc. The "Southern" accent is spread across a much bigger region, and though it differs from place to place it doesn't differ as much as Baltimore does from Boston or Minnesota. I lived a lot farther south for a few years once and I used to be able to tell the difference between someone from Tennesee vs., say, South Carolina, but except for the extremes like Louisiana I pretty much can't do it anymore. NOVA is now mostly "General American English".

Gee willikers! You mean people from different places have a different manner of speaking? I can't even reckon how funny they must talk in exotic lands like Mexico.

Well, Im originally from Southern Virginia. The way people talk in "Nova" doesnt sound terriblly northern to me, so I think people here have southern accents, but just dont realize it. But it is closer to General American, because its very very light. So yeah, Northern Virgina= neutral to my ears.

Bostonian accent is the most endearing. Even if the person doing the talking is a dumb shit. He comes across as someone with brains. Guys from Tenn. can have a PhD in theoretical physics and still sound hick. Don't you agree?

No, Im sorry. Its really harsh sounding. Or sometimes it sounds like a toddler with a speech impediment.

TN accents- it depends on which part. Bostonian sounds a lot more working class, IMO. Nothing is charming about that accent.

I agree with the Tenn. statement. I watch a info commercial show called "Cutlery Corner" they sell knives (cheap shit) and it is broadcast from Tenn. I guess the Smokey Moutain region. They come across like a bunch of ignorant savages when they talk and really butcher the language with what they and other area citizens must think is great elocution and wit. I watch it for the comic effect, I won't buy anything cause I can't see buying 100 knives for 50 bucks. Something is not kosher.

I think it sounds beautiful. I love the way the mountain people talk. Its Elizabethean English. The Boston accent and other northern ones sounds just pitifully painful to listen to. Also, you're forgetting there are many different Tenn accents. Not just East TN- aka like Dolly Parton.

Id take an East TN accent any day over NY/NJ. It just makes SKIN CRAWL to hear them talk. Its like the most hideous sound ever. How could anyone bare listening to it? If you think it sounds good, you're NOT from Virginia. You're some ignorant Yankee. Not just how the talk, but how they act. Has anyone seen the show "Real Housewives of New York"? These women are beautiful and have lots of money and are supposed to be posh and sophisticated, but they act like trash, and they sound even worse! A New York City accent- even the "refined" Manhattan speech is really the most repulsive and unsophisticated sound ever.'

The women with Tenn. accents sound OK, like a southern belle, the men sound like members of the KKK.

You are one of the few who understand the Elizabethan part. My father was
born and raised near Tazewell and I can imitate his accent very well.
My mother came from Ashland, Kentucky and the accent is quite different
but that's the one my thoughts are in. I can also imitate my first wife's
Minneapolis accent but my second wife is from Boston and I'll be damned
if I can take shot at that one.

Sorry, Southern women to me sound repulsive. But I love a man with a nice soft southern accent. Cant stand southern women. Maybe its beacause I am one myself, lol.

These are states I dont consider the South but most people do:

Kentucky- sorry its more like an extension of Ohio, and you got the hillbilly side, but its more a Midwestern state. Also, it was not in the Confederacy

Texas- Its a whole 'nother country. Except for East Texan, culture is Western, not Southern. Accents are Western, not Southern.

Louisiana, yeah, I said it. People in New Orleans sound like they are one step away from Queens or Brooklyn. Louisana, like Texas, has its own thing going on. Cajum, Cerole, etc. Its more like its own region.

Florida- Ironically the furthest South, Florida is simply not the South. Extreme Northern Florida might have a redneck culture, but so does Upstate New York. Not South, sorry. Its almost like what Maine is to New England, you've gone so far, you're past the point of no return.

The border states of Maryland, Missouri, Deleware, etc. Nope.

I consider the South, anything south of the DC metro (a few spots in between),so most of Virginia, The Carolinas, Georgia, TN, Ala, and Ark, and Mississippi.

West VA is a border state, and a grey area, but probably more Southern than Northern. Since it extends as far north as PA and Ohio, I dont consider it a true southern state either.

Ive heard people say they prefer southern accents only on women. I think men can sound wonderful with a Southern accent in their voice, if its the right kind.

If you look at Ohio history there were three great waves of migration
from Kentucky. First, in 1803 after Ohio became a State and again
right after the War of Northern Aggression. The last wave was after
WW-II when thousands upon thousands once again left Kentucky for Ohio,
this time in search of work in manufacturing. As far as calling Kentucky
and extension of Ohio goes, if you were to visit a local bar in the
area between Dayton and Cincinnati and say that they'd probably hit
you over the head with a barstool. Kentuckians who move to Ohio are
called "Briarhoppers" because much of Northern Ky. is covered with
blackberry bushes and it's easier to jump over them than to cut them
down. Hamilton, Ohio is truly Hillbilly country and this song sums
up the local Kentucky culture. Note in the first few seconds the
folks jumping and dancing. It's called the Briarhopper Hop.

You are confusing southern with western. Western sound rugged, like Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Ward Bond, Neville Brand, Richard Boone. Southern like Jim Neigbors, Tennesee Ernie Ford, Goober, Jimmy Carter, Junior Samples, Granpa Jones sound kinda screwy.
