"Things Could Be Worse"

Whenever life hits a rough patch, people are fond of saying, "Well, things could be worse." I guess that works as a reassurance, but at what point do things get so bad that they can't possibly get worse?

For instance, do you think any Jews at Auschwitz said, "Well, things could be worse!" Or when Rusty Yates came home to find that his wife had drowned all five of their children in the bathtub do you think Rusty thought, "Well, things could be worse?"

Sometimes things can't be worse.

I had a friend once tell me, "it could always be worse; you could have diarrhea. Everything is worse when you have diarrhea."

Not sure how much consolation that would have been for the Jews in the Holocaust, but it's a pretty universal truth.

Well, diarrhea is common in filthy detention camps, so I guess it was worse.
