Washington, DC - Four people were shot in a hail of bullets on Gresham Place in Northwest Saturday, just blocks from where the Caribbean Festival was taking place.

Police say at least three of the victims were innocent bystanders--possibly caught in the middle of a battle between neighborhood crews. The fourth victim, who ran from the scene, is being interviewed.

Witnesses describe a scene of pure chaos. People running for cover --and trying to find family members as someone unloads more than 20 shots in the intersection of Gresham Place and Georgia Avenue.

All Dexter Alexander could think about was making sure his family was okay.

"I went back to the car, and they were nearby and doing fine," Alexander said.

Edith Ramberan thought it sounded like firecrackers. It was actually automatic gunfire.

"People started stampeding. I turned down a side street to get away," Ramberan said.

Officers on duty for the Caribbean festival got to the scene quickly--and found three shooting victims at Gresham Place and Georgia Avenue, a fourth at Georgia Avenue and Columbia.

"We believe three of the four are innocent bystanders," Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes says.

Three of the victims are in stable condition. The fourth is in extremely critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
Evidence of the street fight was everywhere--more than 21 pieces-- tagged and photographed.

Right now investigators don't think the shooting had anything to do with the festival-- more likely--a neighborhood dispute.

"We have a lot of people who are cooperating and telling us what they saw, " Groomes says. "Unfortunately this is a hot area for crew disputes."

The parade route was actually shortened to keep visitors out of the trouble spots, but it couldn't prevent the violence.

Police believe some people in the crowd most likely captured some of the action on their cell phone cameras. If you have a picture that could help, they're hoping you'll send it to them.

I wonder how many folks are going to snitch (give up video)? You snitch you got to testify in DC court to convict. Normally the juries are made up of convicts and relatives of the defendants, so much for the witness protection program.

You are correct, in DC the gun must be registered and it can only be kept in the house and then there are restrictions on how it must be stored in the house. I'm not sure what the law says about going to/from a shooting range but knowing DC that's probably illegal. It's great that the gun ban was overturned but at this point you are better off buying a brick.

True. Even though Heller vs. DC should have fixed the problem the
assholes in the City Government (if you can call it that) are going
to tie just about everything up in court they can and it will
probably take 20 years of litigation to finally get them under
control. Meanwhile, in the DC schools the kids have guns and
knives but the teacher can't have a paddle.

Is there EVER an event around here that doesn't include a gun battle?
Next time , have the event in Somolia, it's safer!

Second suspect in shooting near D.C. Caribbean Festival held without bond
By Andrea Noble

A second man arrested in connection with a fatal shooting near a Caribbean Festival in Northwest last month was ordered held without bond Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court.

Deonte J. Bryant, 20, of Northwest was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Robert Foster Jr., 43, the Metropolitan Police Department said. Police say a confrontation between rival gangs erupted into a spray of gunfire on June 25 that killed Foster and injured two other innocent bystanders.

At the bond hearing for Mr. Bryant, his attorney Daniel Quillin argued that his client was trying to defend himself when an adversary began shooting at him. Police say that man is Terry Jiminez, 19, who is also charged with second-degree murder.

However a judge said that Mr. Bryant’s actions, which police said were caught on a surveillance camera, indicate he was attempting to do more than just protect himself.

“It’s clear to me the defendant had the full intention of engaging Mr. Jiminez and his friends that day,” said Judge Diana Haris Epps. “He continued to shoot down the street as Mr. Jiminez and his friends retreated and in the process of doing it struck three innocent victims, one of which lost his life.”

When Mr. Jiminez and Mr. Bryant saw each other walking in the 700 block of Gresham Place Northwest shortly after the parade had concluded, the two began posturing and threatening one another, according to police charging documents.

After following the Bryant and two others about halfway up the block, Mr. Jiminez took cover behind a parked car and began firing at the men he had pursued. Two of the men fired back, trapping numerous people in the crossfire between the two groups.

Twelve 9mm shell casings were recovered from the area where Mr. Bryant and one other person were seen shooting and three .45-caliber shell casings were recovered from the area Mr. Jiminez was seen taking cover.

During the gunfire, Mr. Jiminez was also shot and injured.

Two police officers identified Mr. Bryant as the other shooter after watching the surveillance video of the shootout.

According to charging documents, the two officers previously worked at a local Boys and Girls Club, which Mr. Bryant used to regularly visit because he lived across the street from it.

Mr. Bryant was also identified as a ward of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services by sources within the department who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Police said Mr. Jiminez was a member of a neighborhood gang who left the area for Buffalo, N.Y. in February after witnessing the slaying of a close friend in a drive-by shooting for which he was the target. He reappeared in the neighborhood shortly before the Caribbean Festival and parade.

The charging documents say that Mr. Jiminez was the intended target of a Feb. 19 shooting. The incident was the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Cardozo High School student Lucki Nancy Pannell, who was struck outside a house in the 3000 block of Sherman Avenue in Northwest where she lived.

Criminal never register their guns. I wonder if the guns used in this incident were legally purchased.
