Seems gangs have found the beach to be new territory for robberies. Its too bad Rehoboth was a nice family place at one time.

There have been some arrests made, but here are the details concerning this issue...

State & Rehoboth PD make 3 arrests in string of West Rehoboth assaults/robberies
http://www.wgmd.com/?p=27535&cpage=1

State & Rehoboth Beach Police are investigating a series of assaults and robberies in the West Rehoboth area that have occurred since May 29.

So far police have arrested 3 Harrington residents in connection with the most recent assault on Saturday on Norwood Street – and are still looking for another suspect in connection with that incident.

A disagreement between an 18 year old Rehoboth man & 2 teens early in the day – led to a brawl when the Rehoboth man and his parents returned to the area for a social event. The 2 teens and 48 year old John Boyer all of Harrington and 36 year old Kevin Boyer of Millsboro approached the three from a growing crowd – and assaulted the victim’s father – who was also stabbed in the arm. The 18 year old victim was also assaulted and his mother menaced. State Police are still looking for 36 year old Kevin Boyer.

The other assaults and robberies occurred at Hebron and Central Roads on May 29 at 2am, Burton Village on June 5 at 12:40am, Rehoboth Avenue on June 16 at 11:40 and in the area of Rehoboth Avenue and Church Street just before 2am Saturday. Police say if you’re out late at night – travel in numbers, don’t take shortcuts through deserted areas and try to stay in well-lighted areas.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

POLICE ACTION:
Delaware State Police and the Rehoboth Police Department are working jointly on similar crimes occurring in both jurisdictions.

Delaware State Police Troop 7 is conducting proactive patrols in the affected area as well as their normal tours of duties.

The Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Unit is also coordinating their efforts at solving the recent robbery/ assaults affecting the Rehoboth Beach Community and seeks the public’s assistance.

Delaware State Police will explore all avenues attempting to determine if all crimes are related.

ROBBERY PREVENTION STRATEGIES:
• Most strong-arm robberies occur between the hours of sunset and sunrise.

• Travel populated, well-lighted streets. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas.

• There’s Safety in Numbers! If possible, walk with a companion, either male or female. An armed robber is less likely to confront two or more, than a lone individual.

• When waiting for a bus or taxi, try to select a well-lighted area. Aim for a busy stop where many people will be coming and going.

• Avoid taking shortcuts through deserted areas such as parks, playgrounds, vacant lots, etc.

• If someone asks directions, be polite but maintain a safe distance. Search for an immediate escape route.

• If you are alone and think you are being followed, head for an occupied building such as a bar, restaurant, gas station, fire station, etc. If none is available, cross the street in the middle of the block. If there is street vehicular traffic, try to stop a car for help.

• Robberies can be immediate and unpredictable, not all the strategies relate to every situation.

I found the same story in the DC area news outlets yet when they did their usual cut and paste they left out the suspects description which the Rehoboth papers did not. I cant help but wonder why.

The thread title is a little misleading. There are not people out robbing you as you lay on the beach sunbathing or building a sand castle. This shit is happening at 2am in the morning. Unless you take your family out for 2am walks down dark alley's I think you'll be just fine vacationing in Rehoboth. This shit happens everywhere. In case you haven't heard, nothing good happens after 2am.

Not only is it happening at 2AM, it's happening on the "west side" of Rehobeth - the article I read put the location on the other side of what looks like a river from the beach side (near Church and something intersection).

If you go to Virginia Beach, you'll find pretty much the same sort of situation - within a block or so of the beach you're cool, a little further west and watch yourself.

We won't mention the situation in Atlantic City.

It's probably no more dangerous than wandering around in the Congo after 2 AM

BB*X, it is redundant and unnecessary to write "2am in the morning". But you probably already knew, as you are apparently the grammar police asshole of FFU.

If you have to run away just dive into the ocean. None of these fools can swim, and who knows, they might get carried away out to sea.

All valid points. Of course I'm used to VA Beach, though, so it doesn't seem foreign to me like Rehobeth or AC.
