I like Star Wars better than Close Encounters, but I agree Close Encounters is probably the greatest UFO movie.

I like Star Wars a lot (it changed my life), but strictly from a non-emotional standpoint, 2001 is a technical and artistic achievement in what was, at the time, strictly B Movie territory. 2001 did for Sci Fi movies what The Exorcist did for horror movies...made it an Oscar-caliber genre that allowed movies like Star Wars and Close Encounters to thrive commercially and artistically.

It was re-released in the theaters around 1980 or so and my Mom took me to see it on the big screen. I remember being totally mesmerized by it. It was sorta scary for a young kid but it's probably the first movie where aliens weren't portrayed as evil. I think it's Spielberg's best film.

I remember the re-release. I saw it in the theaters in 1978 and it ended with Dreyfus walking into the light of the mother ship and the ship flying away. The re-release included all of the footage of him inside of the ship looking up, etc, with the lights coming down. I think the re-released version is the one normally shown on TV these days.

I remember it was kind of scary. Even though the aliens weren't bad guys they were still creepy looking and powerful. Looking back, it was definitely better than Jaws, which was his big hit at the time.

What saves Shane is Jack Palance. When he initially walks into the bar room you can actually feel, as a viewer, the presence of evil, he could relate to a role that way. Also, the effects were good, when they fired a 45 revolver it was like Pow! I still think it rates as a top western.

I'm surprised 2001 keeps coming up for Sci-Fi. It is so freaking boring. I realize it comes up as a choice as a "classic", but "best"?

Close Encounters... sadly I have tried three times to watch it at night, and each time fell asleep. I haven't seen the whole movie yet.

Goodfellas wins for mob movie.

I would say the movie excelled the novel. It was strange that the age of the protagonist in the novel was only about 14. But the movie portrayed him as about 18 or an adult to get sentenced to an adult prison.

Another movie that totally outdid the novel: Last of the Mohicans, 1992 version.

I actually read the novel about a year ago and it was awful. Michael Mann changed a lot of things for the better in his movie, including the relationships between some of the characters, which made a lot more sense than the book. The movie's plot also was more believable.

It's an important movie for a number of reasons, including the shot framing, exterior lighting and wire work used in this famous scene...

That certainly was not Palance on the draw scene. They must of hired a competitive draw artist, it was done so fast, or Sammy Davis Jr. he was one of the best actors with a gun or a quick draw at the time.
