Pro tip - non of us could afford a 1 bedroom in 1980 either. There is something called a 'group home' where you share a house with other young adults. Its cheap. In this area 4 young adults could share a 4 bedroom home for 700 bucks a month plus utilities so about 800 a month with trash, gas, water and electric.
In 1984 I shared a 2 bedroom house in Arlington for $300/month plus uitlities so $400/mo (it wasnt well insulated). In todays dollars that is $1,285.65 I was 24 and had been paying my own room and board for 3 years. I had a 7k student loan and I was a waiter at the time. Bought my first residence by age 29 for 100k.
