What age should guys move out of their parents' house?
Posted by: Abstemious Girlfriend ()

What age should guys move out of their parents' home? It seems that in Fairfax the cost of living is higher so they are allowed to live with their parents a lot longer. I've known guys that are in their late 30s still living with their parents because rent is so high in this area. What do you guys think?

No later than 21 or 22. After that, they stay there forever. I got out when I was 21.

I'm 22 and still live with my mom (working 30+ hrs/week and going to school). None of my friends are ready to move out and I can't afford a one bedroom in this area. I'm pretty much trapped in this house until I finish school. Get me out of here!

No age - stay as long as desired; ignore the useless and unknowing social stigma attached to this in certain cultures/locations.

You're still going to school, so that's cool.

If they're returning from college, which is about 22/23 years old or so, my limit would be 1 year post graduation. I lived at home for 5 months post graduation. I couldn't leave fast enough.

If you don't go to college - 21.

You can always get roommates. An old coworker of mine was renting a house with 4 other guys. His rent was like $500 a month. That's fucking cheap.

Living at home past the age of 21 is for serious losers, nerds with no life, and socially-inept dweebs who eat hot pockets in their mom's basement.

Well I'm sorry that you feel that way. I slacked off in high school so I'm getting a late start to college. At least I'm trying now!

Couple more years and I'll be free...

Ha, the guy who grew up across the street from my parents house is still living at home with his parents, and he's probably close to 50. Still in his childhood bedroom, still eating with Mom & Dad every night. Fucked up is what it is.

I was out when I was 17, but I can imagine the high cost of living around this area keeps alot of kids at home longer. Not sure how I feel about that, but I'd say leave as soon as you can afford to move out.

Not as bad as living with his mom, it is more acceptable, I think> I left early to go in military and the middle east, it is hard to go back to parents after that, military is the best experience for a young man.

The worst is a guy who's in his 30s, still living at home, and still driving his parent's car, or his mom's car specificly, that's kinda sad. Although, in this economy it might be common and understandable.

What about the guy in his late 30s living with his dad, no car, no driver's license, and no job? I think that qualifies as a real loser.

What about the guy in his late 30s with the above mentioned qualifications, who in addition to this takes his dog to the beach or the drive-in or everywhere.

It depends on the reason for living with the parents. I know a guy who lived with his parents for 4 years so he could save up enough to buy a house and bulk up his retirement. Another guy moved back in while he starting his own business. There could also be health issues with the parents that he helping them with.

A lot of couples will move back in with their parents for a short period to save up or pay off some debt while house shopping.

Now if the guy is doing heroin and going out drinking ever night while not holding a job then there's a loser stamp. But, in any case that would be a loser.

+1

Nothing like the threat of starvation or homelessness to motivate a kid's ass to get a job and keep it.

If a kid doesn't go to college then there is no reason for them to be in the house at all in their 20's, at that point they need to get kicked out of the nest.

If a kid goes to college, I can see being back home for a year, maybe two in order to save up money to get a place to stay and a car to drive, but if you are 25 and still at home you need to move out. If this area is too expensive to live for what you can get paid for, you need to move somewhere appropriate to your income and jobs market worth.

Seems to me the stigma is largely aimed at Caucasians.

Asian kids stay home until marriage and the families take care of their elders.

I don't recall ever seeing a single asian homeless person.

I started paying 50% rent at 18 and moved out at 21 on my own. Years later my mom had to move in with me cuz she hit the skids. She moved in the day my older sister moved out after her troubles had her living with me.

Regardless of whether you're living off of your parents or they're living off of you, it's a total cockblock.

After college, I worked and lived in NC and CA for 1.5 years before heading back to Nova due to work transfer. I initially moved back in with my mom since it was easier than finding a place while still living in CA, but the intention was to move very shortly afterword.

Well 'very shortly' turned into seven months (!) before I found a place I was really happy moving to. Life isn't that great when opening the garage at 3 AM wakes up your mother (as does cooking frozen pizza at odd hours of the night).

I think you need to move out before girls will take you seriously, i.e. having established yourself in life. I know it's a tough economy and all, but I can't imagine my wife would have been as interested in me if one of our early conversations mentioned I lived with my mom. And I wouldn't blame her.

I disagree. 25 is the best age to move out. But after 25, they really should at least be paying big time rent and doing all the housework. And no one over 25 should be having their parents do their laundry.

The one year rule for post college or military seems like a good rule of thumb. Otherwise, GTFO when you're 21-22 at the most. That's when I moved out. You're actually doing your children a favor by forcing them to support themselves. Otherwise, they'll never learn any survival skills, and their work ethic will likely be substandard. You apply yourself much more effectively at your job when room and board are at stake. How many mid to late 20 somethings or older repeatedly move out and then back in when they can't hack it? Get your kids out early and maybe lend them a few bucks, but take moving back in as a safety net off the table. They'll learn to take on extra side jobs, and perhaps look to better themselves through education and career development sooner or later.

Alternatively, if you feel the need to explain to a potential significant other why you're still living with your parents, to justify it, you're to old to still be sponging off your parents. Simple as that. The fact that you need to explain yourself shows that you know what you're doing is inappropriate on some level.

How is it sponging off your parents if you're paying rent and utilities?

I'm sure the individual's parents aren't charging them market rates to live there. In addition, if they can't make that month's rent for whatever reason, they're most likely not going to be evicted, which would happen in real life. Living with your parents as an adult is not real life, so long as that safety net exists.

Matter of fact, I'd advocate charging your children market rate for everything, including food (in real life, you may visit your parents and eat with them on occasion, so I'll allow that). That way, there's little benefit in not looking for a place of your own. In that scenario, what you do, without telling them, is pocket the difference in what you're charging them, and what it actually costs to have them live there, invest it, and them give it to them as a wedding gift, or maybe to help with a down payment for a house. That way, you're helping them without giving them that sense of security that makes them soft. Living with parents to save money for whatever reason is BS. You need to learn real world survival skills as early as is practical.

I think up to a year (tops) after graduating. It takes time to save up some cash after just starting a career. Especially if loan payments start.

Entry level salary/huge college debt/pricy area...Lots of factors.

After 22 you better have a great excuse (ie, wheelchair). After that, get out loser! As far as the "apartments are too expensive in this area" argument - move. Nobody says you have to start out in this high cost of living area. Move to Western Virginia, Kentucky, Florida - who cares. Find a place you CAN afford and do it. Also, if you can't afford your own grilled cheese, you can't afford a significant other.

That would pretty much force them to get multiple jobs. When would they have time for school?

I gots a buddy, just shy of 30 lives at home and LOVES it, practically brags about it, he loves to rag on me on the first of the month "How was stroking that rent check, buddy?" shit like that. I just laugh because all of the girls who play along with him, clown on him when he is not there... That and his parents publicly clown on him in the presence of our mutual friends parents.

On the other hand, he did just save $1500 bucks and his parents house in Clifton lets him rest his head farther from his parents than I get to from my upstairs, downstairs, left-side, right-side and across the hall neighbors. Also, he doesnt hear them fighting OR fucking as I do my neighbors every week.

Many people over age 22 go to school. It's not uncommon. Some people go back to school... some people get a late start. Not everyone was motivated enough in high school to head off to college right away.

NVCC has a large number of online classes available. It's known as distance learning. This can be synchronous (have to log on at a certain time) or asynchronous (do the online work when you have the time. The only in-person commitment is when you report to the testing center to take your exams. It's around $125 a credit or a little less IIRC.

There's also the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which tops out at $2,500/yr IIRC. This covers the classes, books, other supplies, and even a computer if you take an online class. You can get a free computer and a few free classes. No excuses that you have bills or work several jobs. I work FT and take classes myself. Even if it's one or two a semester and one summer class, you're still making progress and bettering yourself.

What's more, in Virginia, your community college credits transfer 100% to four year schools. They have an agreement to honor any CC degrees. Even better, you get guaranteed admission to any four year school if you have a degree from a Virginia CC. You may not be accepted to the program you want, but you'll be admitted to the school while you're on the waiting list.

No excuses - you can move out, work several jobs, chip away at a degree, and finish in 5,6, or even 8 years if that's all you can do. I know co-workers that are earning degrees in their 30's and 40's.

If you need guidance in personal finance, I recommend The Truth About Money, 4th Ed. bu Ric Edelman. Check out his site. No excuses.

OR I could just live with my parents, work ONE job, and finish the degree in 4 years. I'd rather not be in my 30s and still working on a degree...

Plus, many required classes are not available to take online. How do you get around that?

@ "F That", it must be a kid I'm talking to, with a username like that, so I'll take it where it's coming from, the point was that if you're in your mid 20's and still living with your parents, then you are a waste at that point. You're not truly an adult unless you can at least make an honest attempt at making it on your own. If you want to attempt to justify why you should be able to stay home and continue to be carried by your parents, at least in part, then understand that you're still a kid for all intents and purposes.

You say that you can live with your parents, work one job, and finish in four years. That's what would happen when you're 18-22 y/o, not at 27 or whatever. As far as having to take traditional classes, load them up on the same day or two, or take evening classes. As far as a flexible job, you can be an EMT, ER Tech, or some other type of hospital job (transporter, registrar, janitor, whatever), or work in the service industry as a server, bartender, host, for example. Apply with Fairfax Coutny as a bus driver ($16.72/hr. with free CDL training). You have flexible hours. You're not full time, so you can take a class or two between the morning pick up and afternoon drop off, and also make an evening class. Your summer is off as well, so you can find work as a bus driver for assisted living facilities, or maybe a bus line like Vamoose or something. No excuses.

If you want to tell me F that, or I don't care, or whatever dude, then that goes to show the immature mindset that goes with someone that chooses to remain under their parent's safety net in adulthood.

Yup. I sure spend a lot of time trying to choose professional sounding usernames. Internet forums are serious business! If only I could be as bland as to come up with a username like "Nameless"...

I am proud that I (we) can maintain a family household (and a big enuff house) and have my elderly mom live with us. Being able to take care of the parents has it's own rewards. A future wife would understand, a one night stand would not.

Peace bro..

Agree on the parents. My parents have plenty of money and live in a condo, but money is not what it's all about. Mom is 89 and in a wheelchair. Dad is 86 (WW2 vet). If Dad dies, my mom will need help and I really don't want her in a nursing home. Her mind is sharp as a tack. She had to spend a couple of months in a nursing home at one point (when the wheelchair came into life and they didn't count on how tough my dad is) and those were the unhappiest time of her life. I love her too much to let that happen again. I don't think you know what your parents did for you until you have your own kid. I would take her into my house in a heartbeat. She was not the perfect mom, but I love her. America is probably one of the only countries where we "kick" our families out of the house and rationalize it by saying things like "oh, you are lazy" or "oh, you are an unsuccessful lout". Can you believe there might be parents who say "we love you and want you here?" Or "we don't want you to waste your money at at time of unpredictable futures"?

Thats about it. I moved out at age 18. Rented a dump of a place with several other people. Sure things are expensive but what a relief to come and go as you please. The refrigerator was full of beer and day old pizza. Looking back those days were some of the best of my life before kids and a mortgage.

I've been fortunate to have a close group of friends since high school, and we've all stayed close over the years. College was a blast, and the party extended a few years beyond college (admitedly longer than it probably should have). But now I'm 29, married for 3 years, own a house, have a solid career, and we just had our first child a few weeks ago. I'm very happy, very satisfied, and very well adjusted to adult life. But almost all of my friends (who are also 29ish) still live with their parents! Some have full time jobs, one has NO JOB, one has a career in which he makes more money than I do! But these guys act like I'm some sort of dumbass for choosing to grow up.

One friend in particular is always going on about all the bars he's going to, going out to eat every single night, expensive trips to Vegas, and next spring he's going to Europe for 2 weeks! He'll be 30 by then, and since he lives with his parents, ALL his income is disposable. He could easily afford to rent an apartment, but then he'd have to stop drinking every night and eating all these expensive meals. No girlfriend. No wife and kids to hold him down, he brags about. But he doesn't even have a place to watch tv if he wants to, b/c his parents don't let him use the tv unless they aren't using it.

Another friend is "saving up to buy a house". I believed him when he was 26. Now that he's 30 and still "saving up to buy a house" I know that he's just sponging off his parents and stashing away all his money (also taking expensive vacations).

It's pathetic, but they really do believe that I'm the poor sucker and that they have the advantage over me.

Given the price of housing, the inflating rents and deflating wages, for a child to stay with his parents is not odious. To the willing, there is no injury, and social stigma is only for people dumb enough to heed it.

Chicks need to get it pounded in their selfish heads that we're not living in our grandparents' America. All of the jobs that could absorb and employ the broad middle part of the bell curve are all gone. The factories, textile mills, agriculture, and supporting businesses. All gone. What's left is the economic equivalent of weeds, scavengers, and professional ass kissers.

There's no reason why a guy can't live with his parents as long as he remains on good terms with them. Marriage is the only thing that a dude MUST move out for. There's plenty of disposable chicks to shack up with for a time but, damn few worth marrying. Regardless, don't get her pregnant! Better to get a vasectomy than be on your own and stuck with a pregnant chick. Only human roaches will be spawning under today's shitty conditions.

Any age is fine - stay around til you're old and gray - fine - leave when you're too young to join the Army - fine.

It's all fine.

To each his own.

And, of course, under special circumstances there are a multitude of reasons to hang around til whenever.

Don't make such decisions based off of number of orbits around a star - how silly.

I just moved out and I'm 31 but that's because I got married. My income and my wife's income together, we are able to live on our own. I didn't finish college but I do work, and have been there for more than 10 years.

I know one person exactly like this. It depends on the persons attitude/ work ethic/ etc. IMO that's the traits that define "loser" status. These guys want stuff, but don't wanna earn it. Their parents are enablers so they basically get whatever they want. I.e, no rent free, no responsibility, unrealistic altogether.

If you're working towards being on your own in the world but can't yet afford it, that's one thing. But if you're a mommas boy, not working, and making excuses. Then you're a loser, no matter what the age.

22, buying my first place and moving out in the next few weeks. IMO you should be out at around 18 - 20. I am a little late but I have saved a great down payment which I couldn't have done without living with the rents so long. Looking forward to getting out asap! I cannot see how anyone can be 25+ and still be at home, shame on them and the parents. You can get a room for $400 - $500 easy, a shit job paying $10 - 14 and you can easily do it while owning a car as well.

If I ever needed to, theres room for me and I will always be welcome home. Good to know, but I like my personal space. If you go to college away from home you effectively move out at 18 and visit over the summer and breaks. Most of us had zero interest in returning home after college and most I know had their own places before or immediately after graduating.

That said I think a 6 month grace period after graduation is generally okay. I was living on my own 12 months a year by 20 - loved it.

I think living on your own for the first time, paying your own rent and car payments is one of the best times in life. You feel successful, you have few obligations (save student loans) and your standards are low. All your peers are starting out too so no one judges you by your material holdings the same way they do later in life.

That said kids DO NOT rack up 200k in student loans unless you are 100% certain you can get a bitchin job right away making 60k+ immediately with certain chance for advancement to six figures within 5-7 years. You will never pay off your debt and still be able to have a family and home and all that good stuff.

Now last year about this time I worked for kroger full time at night making $13.98 and getting fulltime as well as OT and even then it would have been imposible to move out even with room mates. Here's a tip for you under 25ers. Don't just look for jobs you know you can get. Get a professional resume' together. Go to a Career Center AND create Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com accounts. Create a search list (Though employed I still keep job lists coming daily). Challenge yourself and actually go through with an interview. That job you didn't expect could increase your $11-$15 an hour to $20-$24 an hour. It's way to easy to get complacent when living at home. I know first hand.

What bills do you have that are so expensive? While you are still living at home you should be saving enough to buy a car (cash) at the very least. Save 2k - 3k buy a decent beater, and gtfo out. The only bills you should have are for car insurance and a cell phone.

Income - $1,600

----

Where are you guys finding these $500 apartments? Everything I find around here is closer to $1,000.
Also, you may have forgotten, but it's now mandatory to buy health insurance, so that's an additional $200-$300 a month you'll have to spend.
Also, you just demonstrated that you're spending all the money you're making and not saving any.
Are you happy with that?

Not saving "any" because that $100 you said you're saving could easily get spent on an unexpected emergency or a one-time splurge, and it's not even really relevant anyway considering you're going to have to spend more than that $100 on health insurance now anyway (unless your job is paying for it).

Also, are you paying taxes or are you committing tax evasion?

Look, I am only taking home 320 a week. Per month that's 1280. The average apartment in New Hampshire costs 1000 a month. Yeah I live in New Hampshire. But looking at my budgeted earnings I concluded this; my bare minimum of expenses force me into food 200 per month, gas 120 per month, car ins, 50 per month, car payments 190 per month, my IRA 50 per month costing total of 610 per month. Providing I never buy anything beyond those things, or do anything in life that will cause extra expenses that leaves me with 670 for rent. But if trying to make it on my own, rent will cost 1000 per month that leaves me with only 280 to balance over my car payments, car insurance, gas, food, and IRA. But I also go to physical therapy which is cheaper than the doctor which is 45 a visit. That's every two weeks. So that's another 90.

But I won't bore with all these numerical statistics. Basically, if you live in new england and your looking for a full time job and all that's hiring is companies like Walmart and Dunkin Donuts, and your starting out after finishing college... Well that's it prepare to have no life for many many years. So you say move away. There's just one problem, I have no money to move. Boy, that lousy paying job at Walmart is looking pretty nifty. And then you become stuck like me.

What happened to all that good education you got? You're white and got a degree in basket weaving. You should be set unless you are New
Hampshire trash and plan to knock off an elementary school like they do in Conn.
