The number of people on food stamps is a ridiculous economic indicator. Funding for food stamps could be stopped tomorrow, no one on food stamps, and would our economy be better off? No! Except of course youd have Republicans complaining about how heartless Obama is.

Cutting off food stamps to Americans who can't find jobs in this Bush/Cheney disaster aftermath is staggeringly inhuman. People buy FOOD with that money, they can't live it all up on food stamps and buy TVs with it. That was a typo. My mistake four months to 4 years of Dems in charge. I don't bear any animosity toward the President. I voted for him, but it was a mistake. I don't intend on making the same mistake again. Speaking of credibility, before you go into a temper tantrum again, try defending what Congress and President have done on the economic front. You're in constant attack mode.

I have done so, defending Obama and the Democrats' attempt to stop what you advocate, which is keeping people making $250k+ under an historically low tax burden while arguing jobless should be cut off from food stamps.

"Keep taxes low or there will be no jobs!!!1!11!!1!!!!" is a very odd way to explain how those tax rates, having been so low for ten years, have us at 9.1% unemployment now. That's working out real nicely, let's keep bread out of the pantries of the unemployed as a brilliant, helpful solution. Didn't work then, won't work now and I can't see how in the face of the last ten years those tax rates can't be raised back to Clinton era levels when jobs were plentiful and rich had fistfulls of cash then too.

So do lower ttax rates lead to high unemployment?


Are all food stamp recipients deserving? Surely there are no cheats or sneaks in there, America is the most honest nation in the galaxy.

Both parties are to partially to blame, the economy is another factor, and of course there are people out there just milking the system (immigrants, lazy people, etc) that are a burden on the system.

All the above people, top of their class. CEO's. Some good, some bad. The media switches daily from trumpeting their victories to trashing their stupid decisions. No one points fingers at "the guy that had the job before". No one let's them off the hook because of that guy either. They make or break themselves. They take their own heat.

But politicians? Especially the president. Any and all excuses are accepted if you're so blinded by your vote that you can't admit you made a mistake. Any and all talking points fed you by their party are not only acceptable, they're required learning.

Thinking people vote and then deal with the consequences. Sheeple can't stop casting the same vote long enough to realize how they are failing their own country but not moving forward. Those CEO's...they don't do their jobs, they get fired. Politicians don't do their jobs, they get excuses from the public.

Personally, I find it hard to blame the president for this. With all the apologists out there telling him how wonderful he is...why should he try to do better? "We can do better"........wanna bet that will replace hope and change?

Actually, that was a demand of the Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee who's a Republican. A lot of the stuff that the Republicans voted against on the floor of the House were inserted into the bill by Republicans during the writing of the legislation in the Ways and Means committee. 44.5 billion dollars in grants to states for transportation projects. 2% payroll tax cut.

Items that can be purchased with SNAP include:

Food or food products meant to be eaten by people
Vegetable seeds and food producing plants, roots, and trees for family consumption
Baby formula, diabetic, and diet foods
Edible items used in preparing or preserving food such as spices and herbs, pectin, and shortening
Water and ice labeled for human consumption
Snack foods
Meals delivered to elderly or disabled SNAP recipients if the organization providing the meal is authorized to accept EBT cards

Items that cannot be purchased with benefits include:

Prepared hot foods in grocery stores
Any prepared food (hot or cold) sold and meant to be eaten at the store
Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
Cleaning products, paper products, toiletries, and cooking utensils
Pet foods
Items for food preservation such as canning jars and lids, freezer containers, or food wrapping paper
Medicines, vitamins or minerals
Items for gardening such as fertilizer and peat moss

Retailers will not give cash change on an EBT purchase. The EBT card will not allow a person to receive cash from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

Food purchased with SNAP benefits is exempt from the state sales tax. However, sales tax is charged on the value of manufacturer's coupons that might be used in the transaction, and the sales tax must be paid in cash.

Example: An EBT cardholder's groceries add up to $27.50. She has manufacturer's coupons which total $3.50, to reduce her grocery bill to $24.00. $24.00 is deducted from her EBT account, and she will owe Virginia's food sales tax on the value of the coupons (2.5% food sales tax times $3.50 equals 8.75 cents, rounded to 9 cents). When items that were purchased with SNAP benefits are returned to the store, the merchant credits the money back to the EBT account. Cash is not given back.

At the checkout counter, tell the cashier beforehand that you will pay with your EBT Card. Depending on the store, you may need to separate the items.

There's a lot of cheating and chicanery gionng on with food stamps. Used to be a Safeway in Shaw in NWDC where you could go on the first day of the month and people would "shop" with you- spend their food stamps in exchange for 50 cents on the dollar.

A lot of low end grocers and c-stores get nailed for buying the stamps outright and then using them to "pay" for non-existent purchases or purchases of produce or meat that is trashed.

The conversion away from the stamps to the card system probably hasn't efffected this msuch.

Ask yourself also what the cost is administratively for each dollar of food stams give. It is probably something close to $2 for every every dollar alloted, but that is just a guess.

Your original purpose, obvious from the thread title and your link and reference to Obama, is an attempt to drive a stereotype that food stamp recipients are poor brown people who don't do anything, led by a brown president.

But many of the whites you want to support are on food stamp programs because of the Great Recession, which we are still in and started on Bush's watch. Companies have been setting up headquarters in foreign tax havens and eliminating essentially all of their tax liability through a fraudulent technique known as earnings stripping. Blaming Bush has to do with WingNut's portrayal of this economy being Obama's fault. Looking backward obviously does no good, it is more of response to a direction of blame that is inappropriate and unsupported by facts.

I didn't like Obama's "running against Bush, who isn't running" strategy in the 2008 election, and place blame for why Boehner is speaker of the House on the repeat of using that in 2010.

I dont care for Boehner either. There is a lack of leadership on both sides. They keep bitching about the past and where to place blame. I look at Pelosi and Boehner and ask is this the best we can do?

I keep hearing Obama say he inherited the economy, ok even if I concede that we have to do something. This blaming others is getting us nowhere. Step one get us the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Our troops are doing the best they can but both countries are so screwed up and corrupt I am not sure we can ever make a difference.

It doesn't address the issue to say that Obama has failed to overturn Bush policies in his first two years while the economy is in severe recession. The problem is that all of the Republican candidates thus far have been running on the Bush platform. If you vote all Republican, you're going to get more of the same policies designed to bankrupt the country ... because that's exactly what the Pubs want. They want a train wreck that destroys the public pension systems and health systems.

You are confusing "simple majority" with "filibuster-proof majority". Republicans threw blocks up wherever they could, and when Scott Brown was elected ina special election to replace Kennedy in Massachusetts it opened up new ways for Republicans to block Senate actions.

Something has to be able to come up for a vote before a majority can vote on it.

There is no backpedaling, you might as well go back and edit out your racist posts. You clearly called Hybla Valley, which is majority non-white, "pedestrian" and customers of the food stamp program. I suppose giving Hybla Valley's 28.53% African American number (over twice the national average) vs Great Falls' 1.20% (less than a tenth of the national average) would make you feel better, but it was already in my post.

People live (out here in the real world) where they live because of how they live. Poor people live in poor areas and take advantage of food stamp offerings. Non-poor people live in areas like Great Falls and do not take advantage of food stamps.
