I mean that if you go to Best Buy to get a DIRECTV receiver, you won't have the option to buy it. You have to lease. That being said, you won't be charged an additional lease fee - just the standard $4.99 for an additional receiver.
Keep in mind that despite the fact that it is a leased receiver, you may still be required to pay something up front. There shouldn't be any fees for standard receivers, but you may have to pay for a DVR, HD receiver or HD DVR (but this still doesn't mean you own the receiver).
Therefore, if you do get a receiver at Best Buy, you'll be required to activate it within a certain time frame. And if you cancel your service, you will have to send the receiver back.
