D.C. bar shooting suspect ordered deported in 2007
Tuesday - 3/29/2011, 12:19pm ET
WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a man charged with fatally shooting a man at a D.C. bar has been wanted by immigration officials since 2007, after authorities discovered that he was in the country illegally.

At a hearing Monday, prosecutors argued that 24-year-old Alexis Pineda of Suitland, Md., a native of Guatemala, should be held in the D.C. jail and was a fugitive after immigration officials found him in Arizona and ordered him deported.

Pineda is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 24-year-old Jose Hernandez-Romero at a bar near the convention center on Sunday. According to charging documents, one witness told police that Pineda had been staring at Hernandez-Romero and shot him after he did not respond to a question.

Pineda was ordered held until an April 21 hearing.

These stories have become boring because they are so common place, but they keep happening and wil keep happening.

If it can be shown that the killer had been picked up on minor charges and released after the deporttion order, it again illustrates the incompetence and the disconnect between the feds and states and makes a pretty convincing argument for state initiatives as approved in Arizona.

There should be a central database that tracks every immigrant's status until they become naturalized. If someone's legal immigration status lapses, they are given two weeks or whatever to fix the problem or get deported. End of story. Illegal immigration is a crime in and of itself, but I think illegal immigration encourages further crime.

MrMephisto has a SSN, driver's license, bank account, credit cards, a car in his name, tax records, a legitimate employer, and a multitude of other things that can be used to track me down if I commit a crime.

Julio Jiminez-Martinez-Consuela, who snuck across the border, has none of those things. If he does, they're fraudulent. He'll be a lot harder to track down if he's wanted for committing a crime.
