UVa student killed in fall from roof identified
Tuesday - 3/29/2011, 2:29pm ET
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia has identified the student who died after falling from the roof of the physics building at the Charlottesville school.
Officials say first-year student Thomas W. Gilliam IV was declared dead early Monday at U.Va. Medical Center after the Sunday evening incident.
Police are continuing their investigation but the school says it appears to be a "tragic accident." There was no indication that alcohol was a factor and officials have ruled out foul play and suicide.
According to a statement from university police, the physics building had been locked, but someone "compromised" the lock on a side door. Gilliam entered through that door, and then let others in through the building's main entrance, police said, citing student accounts. The students then headed for the roof.
Snow and rain over the weekend caused the roof to be slippery, and when Gilliam tried to walk along a part of the shingled roof he was unable to keep his footing and fell 40 feet to the concrete below, police said.
Gilliam was a first-year student in the university's College of Arts & Sciences, a member of the First-Year Council and had hoped to become a resident adviser next year, the school said. The 19-year-old's family is from Albemarle County and has lived in Ireland for the last several years.
Gilliam will be remembered Friday at a memorial service for students who have died this past year.
