The "Mid-Atlantic"

I was wondering what states are now considered "Mid-Atlantic". Its very confusing.

When I was in school in the 80s and 90s, Virginia and even Maryland were not considered Mid-Atlantic" but part of the 'South Atlantic" states.

We were taught the Mid-Atlantic were NY, PA, and NJ.(ny and pa are very large states and take up most of the NE Corridor). These states between New England and the South. I believe DE was included in that.

But because West VA is all messed up Geographically, they never figured out what to do with her.

Then I have seen the Mid-Atlantic refer to MD, DE, West VA, MD, and VA. Va being the southern extreme. I guess to me that would make more sense.

Some people even include North Carolina as Mid-Atlantic. But I suppose states overlap each other, right?

IMO, Virginia is Mid-Atlantic but transitions into the Southeast.

If Virginia is truly the Mid-Atlantic, I think Kentucky should be "Midwest". Because its parellel but they still include it in the Southern states.

You think about it too much. Virginia is Geographically Mid-Atlantic, but historically part of the "Old South". And no, New York is not Mid-Atlantic. Its way up in the North. The Mid-Atlantic means what it is: pretty much in the middle. Now, some may argue that Virginia is the Southeast. Depending on how you look at the map. I think the Southeast begins at NC. And yes, KY is Midwest.

It's like this part of Virginia is so stressed on the"Northern" part. What happened when the south go whipped, the good Virginians who realized what a lie their cause was through shame adopted the Northern as a sort of facade or false persona to obscure their involvement, only fooling themselves in the process.

In the diary of Joseph Plum Martin, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, he was from Conn. and he referred to Pensylvanians as "Southerners". It's all relative in the South.

If Kentucky is Mid South how can VA be "Mid-Atlantic". KY is same lat as Virginia. Virginia is also much more Southern KY. was not even in the Confederacy.

Thats not it at all. Virginia just has different regions like every other state. There is "North Georgia" as well. Its just a way to spec. what part of Virginia it is.
