Music discussion

I've seen this done at several other forums, so why not here. Post any music you have listened to recently or discuss what others have recently played or heard.
My last song played was Tears For Fears - Mad World. I liked it more than the cover that was later released in the movie Donnie Darko as most of you have probably seen or heard.

I listened to The Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Strung Out In Heaven" while I was on Metro this morning. Not their best album, but good enough that I'll probably listen to it again when I head out here in a few minutes.

Donnie Darko was a horrible movie.

But currently on my turntable is Patsy Cline- Gotta Lotta Rhythm.

Listened to "How Soon is Now", The Smiths, on my hour-drive home from work today. I can't believe 94.7 FM played this song. Made my ride much more bearable.

Im sorry but Donnie Darko was hopelessly pretentious in every way. Not to mention it was the most low budget film I think I've ever seen. And no one could act in the movie, except for maybe Jena Malone who is always good in everything she plays.

Talk about stuck in an era...I cranked Aerosmith's "Jaded" yesterday!

I have been listening to Maldita Vecindad. Not by choice, but because the workers on my neighbors house continue to blast that chicano crap all day. I used to be fine with the immigrants moving here until I heard this crap, oh, and also after one of them pissed on the side of my house.

ferfux, not so sure about the Beach Boy that hung out with Charlie Manson but the two Stone Roses albums hold a special place indeed - stone-cold grooves to smokin' blues, haunting imagery to ten-story love songs, shit makes me feel like rolling...

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,
I'll tell you my story man, I wish I'd never been born,
I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams,

c'mon c'mon now baby let the good times roll again...

Anyone ever listen to local music? There was a big movement of local bands in the 90's but maybe not so much anymore?

Dischord used to have some pretty good bands, but I personally think the label sucks nowadays. I used to really like the local band The Shakedowns and would go to their shows, but they are either on hiatus over the past 2 years or they've broken up completely. Another local band, The Nuclears, won the local garage band contest at the Black Cat two or three years ago, I always thought they were great, and I'm pretty sure they are still around. The Phobes were also a cool local band, but they broke up a year or two ago. I remember the Washington Social Cub getting some national press a year or so ago, I think they even were the house band for some talk show, but honestly I thought they were really lame. DC doesn't really have a good rock scene, which is a little surprsing given it's impressive stature in the annals of punk rock history. But occassionally you can go out and see a decent local act.

I'm familiar with Dischord. I just remember Emmet Swimming, Jimmies Chicken Shack and Vertical Horizon. I think even Hootie and the Blow Fish. Some local bands done good. I co-created a local music site for this area and I was just curious as to what bands look like the up and comers.
DC generates some good bands but they are so quick to dash to New York or go on tour that you'd never know they originated from here.

awesome stuff....every song they did is great.

Quitter UK...great local band.

Right on. My brother actually shot the Fake Wood Trim video and that's when i got hooked on them. I have every album except Bathing in the New Economy. Than years later I shot an interview with them for my site.

Quitter UK was the side project, until I guess Tamer came back and than Scott from Smartbomb joined the group.

I can always listen to E.S. and feel good, I can't say that for many albums I own.

I second Emmet Swimming. I always thought they'd go mainstream. We hired them back in 1997 to play at our backyard pig roast BBQ. I think the lead singer's name is Todd who lived in an apartment off Jermantown Rd. behind the Giant. I remember him to be a pretty funny dude. Also, I used to party with Phil C. of SEV back in the day who I knew through a mutual friend, but haven't heard much from him or the band lately - not since around the time they did that Pepsi Blue commercial whenever that was. -§

For real, In a way it sucks that the Pepsi commercial defined SEV's career. Not that that's a bad thing, but they were a great band and you never hear about them without a mention of the Pepsi Commercial. I guess it was a memorable moment but everything else kinda got shadowed from it.

Yeah Todd Watts, he really cool and down to earth and that was shown through the lyrics.

All this reminds me of Planet Nova, now RAIN, but it was a great Mason hangout/underground venue. Still is a cool room but to much for my taste.

Todd Watts is very down to earth, just an all around great person.

Really wish they would record some new stuff. I don't think there is a bad song in their catalog.

You can get "Bathing In The New Economy" online. It only has 4 songs on it, but they are good.

Now that Tamer is back, they are playing tighter than ever (on the few occasions they play together)

Sabbath is cool. I dated a girl for a while who claimed she dated the drummer from Sabbath, Billy I think, for 2 years. She showed me some music that he had sent her. Said they broke up because something traumatic happened.

I can believe it, she was a catalog model for a while.
