Movies that take place in Northern Virginia...

Can anyone think of any movies that take place in NOVA? The only one that comes to mind is "Sweet Dreams" starring Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline

Any others?

Breach

During the scene where the FBI catches Robert Hansen, you can see the big radio tower in Tysons in the background. The scene was shot right there in Vienna near his dead-drop.

Excellent film, btw.

DC Cab

It was mostly set downtown, but there were parts that were supposed to be near the airport. Whether it was actually filmed here or not, I don't know.

One of the Diehard movies took place at Dulles, but the interior shots were obviously some other airport.

Donnie Darko supposedly takes place in NoVA, but it was all shot in California. I think the town name in the film is made up.

The final scenes for Broadcast News are supposed to be at Dulles, but they actually shot them at BWI.

The opening scene to Broadcast News was filmed in front of the Heart in Hand. My understanding is that they spent several days in town filming but only used that scene.

My Fellow Americans - they had quite a bit of shooting down at Union Station in DC.

There was something they were filming in Fairfax City a couple of years back - mostly night scenes outside TT Reynolds (or inside - they were somewhere in that vicinity) and then they had some driving scenes they shot going down University Dr.

Here's a list from the VA Government website:

There was a movie in the 80s called "Prince of the City", a pretty good one starring Treat Williams. He was a corrupt cop and there was a scene where he was being escorted by Marshalls (witness protection). I remember a huge border sign in the movie "Welcome to Virginia".

There was an episode of NCIS, which was set in DC, in which they had to chase somebody down in Woodbridge.

Funny, I never knew Woodbridge has so much sand and palm trees, looked kind of like Hollywood to me...

Same thing with the season of 24 that takes place in the DC area. Jack Baur gets onto a Metro train that is clearly not a piece of DC Metro rail equipment; the doors, windows, and seats were totally different. And the station itself looked all wrong. I read that most of the street scenes in movies and TV shows these days are just CGI'd in, anyway. The actor stands in front of a green screen and later they add in the cityscape.

Part of it was shot on H Street in Chinatown, I know someone who was there during the filming, and said that Arnold & his wife were both hanging out there.

There's also that Gene Hackman/Will Smith movie that was filmed in DC. There's a scene where a character (Jason Lee, I think) is being chased on Columbia Rd. in Adams Morgan. He sneaks into a restaraunt, runs out the back door, and is suddenly somewhere down near DuPont Circle.

It was at Tysons 2, the Galleria. I saw them shoot the shot where the good guys run up and shoot at the bad guy. I was up above them, behind where the bad guy was except there was nobody there (except cameramen) for that shot. My brother took two gumballs from the gumball machine that exploded. It was already broken when we got there; they did the shots out of order.

Lots of political and spy type films are partly set in NoVa, although they are often shot in other places such as Toronto. Are we talking about films that are set here, or ones that were shot here?

Imdb has some filming locations listed, but it isn't complete.

Most slave themed movies are filmed in NOVA. The realistic ones that captured the cruelty of the institution. I mean what better place, it is like filming a sea movie on the ocean instead of a big swimming pool. The whipping scenes are usually done, from what I understand, by the local extras. No actor, not even Sean Penn, could duplicate the natural inborn ability of a redneck to brandish a whip with such a inherent "can do" attitude.

This happens a lot I think especially lately as there's a few shows that take place here. Criminal Minds sometimes has episodes that take place in DC but don't get filmed here. It's really obvious when they're on the Metro that they aren't on the Metro.

I also remember an X-Files that took place in Annandale. The docks in Annandale.

The runway scenes were filmed at the old Denver airport, and the interior shots were LAX (I looked it up). I'm pretty sure there's a few establishing shots of the Dulles terminal thrown in, but that's probably the only filming done here.

That show also mentioned a few other not so well known issues that surprised me as well. The X-Files was a great show.

The Transformers 2 crew was actually on-location at the museum for a week or so (The Udvar-Hazy Center of course). I think most of the action took place over a few days, and I didn't even hear about it until it was just about wrapped up. I'm sure they could've used some extras at least.

Filmed in Georgia, and IIRC Roanoke VA. The story was only very loosely based on the T.C. Williams Titan's campionship season. The 1971 Titans used to have a website that listed many of the inaccuracies in the movie.

Yes, Marnie was filmed around Middleburg and Rt 50. I even recognized the 'Red Fox Inn". Her character is from Baltimore but lies and says she is from Richmond. Because she has a slight southern accent. Then they film foxhunting in DE and NJ. The film shows Baltimore but its definitely a Hollywood lot. The rest was on location. Made good use of the Mid Atlantic region.

Which episode? I work right around the corner from Ruffinos.

Bones and NCIS also frequently mention local areas, even though they sometimes fudge addresses and neighborhoods. But there was one episode of Bones where one of the characters stated that a suspect had been spotted driving on "The 66". Completely blew the illusion that the characters were from around here.

@Meeper - I hate when NCIS fakes a location. They once identified a location on "Raven Road" which they Googled and it was actually Ravensworth Road, they just airbrushed "worth" out of the screen or whatever. They film all that crap in SoCal,anyways

@meh - totally just found out about that dude yesterday. Just............wow

A recent episode of NCIS was showing a map and referring to The Braddock Mall. I wonder if they meant University? The map showed the Burke Centre VRE about a block away from Ox Road (just a bit off) and the suspect supposedly drove south on Ox Road over the tracks (referring to train tracks) while Ox Road does cross train tracks, no one hardly ever notices them.

Doubt anyone would care, but a new movie to be filmed in Richmond/Petersburg area.

Spielberg's Lincoln to film in Va. this fall.
The film is scheduled for release in 2012.

Tons of movies are SET in DC, but not necessarily Nova, which was the original question.

Whether they're filmed here or not... most indoor scenes won't be, but on rare occasions most of the production might take place here (talking DC now).

In other big news, Seinfeld and Friends were actually filmed in L.A.! (gasp!)

I think we already displayed that point clearly with this thread; http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/40/294368/294368.html#msg-294368

Jerry and George waked down this street often.

How does one "wake" down a street?

You can see the phone books in the airport terminal scenes. They're not from this part of the country.

It's some unamed Hoover bio-pic. Saw Duvall a few weeks ago in town, he had a bad limp.
