The food in the school system I went to was terrible so I usually
brought my own. The one thing they did have that I liked was the
date pudding and I asked for the recipe and my mother made it fequently.

I never bought lunch in high school. Not once. I always brought it. Probably because I used lunch to do homework that was due for the classes later in the day and had to maximize my time.

My HS cafeteria sucked. The had pretty good BBQ sandwiches and chicken pot pie, but the burritos, spaghetti and pizza were royally fucked up. On those days I ate chef salad.

This is going to date me.
When I was in HS the a la carte line had homemade soup. When I was in sports my lunch was usually soup and a couple of Tasteycake fudge bars.

I never ate a lunch at the HS cafeteria that I can really remember, but in elementary and junior high, soybean burgers and tater tots were the shit.

After major holidays my high school cafeteria usually served turkey pot pie. Only pot pie in PA Dutch country is more like a stew (no pie crust). It was actually really tasty.

After a few incident of broken glass, can tabs, and banana peels being found in lunches I became hooked on honey buns (prepackaged) and chocolate shakes. Had that for lunch almost daily for almost three years.

Not high school, but, the Chicken Cosmo served in Penn State cafeterias was the greatest sandwich ever. It was the meatiest, juiciest chicken patty of all time.

I see that this is an old thread, but I wanted to weigh in about the buffalo burgers. I work at SDSU and one of the food science profs here actually had a session for Native American kids from the Flandreau Indian School where he taught them how to make a whole range of things from bison (buffalo) meat, including burgers, tacos, etc. So while I can't speak specifically to dika-dika having buffalo burgers in school, it's not that unusual a meat up here, or in Michigan, where I lived some years back and had them at a place called Cubby's in East Lansing.

The first few years I would eat a hostess cherry or apple pie and a veryfine fruit punch. Both from the vending machine. Nothing but sugar!
Later I learned to like the cheeseburgers and fries. I would take my fries and put them under the bun and then pour on loads of ketchup and mustard on it.
My last few years I would build a salad at the salad bar.
Forgot to mention, I brought a lunch every day. Problem was it always ended up being my breakfast!

I liked the weird not-quite-meat? hamburgers. They were advertised as meat, but I think were mainly soybean, or some kind of filler, with a lot of salt. Strange flavor. Not sure what they realy were. Have not had hamburgers like it since.
