Good choice. When I was learning bass as a kid, the intro to Ramble On was one of the first things I worked on. Simple, yet distinctive and not too hard to learn.

Not learning how to play bass guitar when I was younger is a huge regret of mine. I could be ripping out Rush and Iron Maiden riffs right now. Thankfully my daughter has taken a liking to it and has been taking lessons for a year now. Here's a few she's been working on. Thank God her teacher knows good music and not just that crap that's being played today.

She prefers the Les Claypool/Primus version of Sabbath's NIB.

Not addressing "best bass riff"... that's silly to pick just one... but all these Chili Peppers videos made me think of this amazing song...

The entire song is non-stop bassy goodness...

When I was in high school I taught myself lots of Rush bass lines, including YYZ, Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, Distant Early Warning, etc. As far as actual repetive riffs go, I think one of my favorites is Vital Signs:

Thanks for this thread, WTL, I've been holding back from it since I saw Rush back in September. I'm a Geddy Lee geek.

Here's another great bass riff, even if you're not an MJ fan:

I've always thought this is probably synth bass, but it's easy enough to play on a real bass.

Geddy uses a Jaco Pastorius signature Fender Jazz bass for that song, based on the modified J-bass Jaco used back in the 70s when he played bass for the jazz group Weather Report. Jaco himself was one of the greatest bassists, although he was a complete hot dog. Too bad he got killed by a bouncer. Not really a riff, more of a solo:

Learning to play bass forces you to look beyond rock, since some of the best bassists and other musicians play jazz.

Since we're posting solos anyway, how about some more Geddy?

Geddy's "solos" are really more like jams on riffs, anyway, except for the bass fills he does on stuff like YYZ. He always fits into the song instead of clashing with it.

Here's another cool bass riff, although it's not so simple:

The bass line in this song is pretty good. I'll admit the song (and group) is kinda gay but a lot of girls in the late 80's dug this stuff. I'm not to proud to admit that I faked liking this sort of music in order to score points with girls back then.

I'll openly admit to being a Smiths fan. Headmaster Ritual is fun to play on bass.

Time to get over the "gay band" issue... some of the most fun bass to play for me is Kitchens of Distinction. I'd be thrilled being in a Kitchens and Smiths cover band. Call me gay but they are fun songs to play.

In their earlier days Rush was sometimes called a metal band. IMO the two most metal Rush songs are these. Geddy was using his Ric bass back then and he had that clanky metal tone and heavy, kickass riffs.

Necromancer takes two youtube vids to play, and the first metal bass riff starts around 4:20 or so (coincidence?), and at around 5:30 it changes up, something Metallica would later use alot. Cliff Burton was a huge Geddy fan, and I can picture him listening to this as a teenager:

Cygnus X1 is a total sci fi metal geekfest and starts off with an evil, echoing bass riff, and the song features what has to be the most epic Geddy scream ever. Unfortunately, youtube removed all the soundtracks of the studio version, so you don't get the scream here:

And this one hit wonder from the 80's is catchy.

Romeo Void had the ugliest vocalist ever, made Mama Cass look svelte and sexy. I was really surprised they could make it in the age of video.

Necromancer by Rush is a great forgotten tune. A nice extended jam to veg to.

One of the most underrated bass players of all-time IMO was Joe Lally of Fugazi. He played the most musical bass of any hardcore/punk band, something the genre is not really known for. No one laid down grooves like Joe Lally did, especially during live shows.

Not a great recording, but Fugazi's "Arpeggiator" showcases what he added to that band.

The bassline in that Romeo Void song reminds me of Peter Schilling's Major Tom, which is odd because the songs themself are totally not alike. Like many of these, this is a simple line but it defines the sound of the song:

Cygnus X-1, Major Tom, I am a pathetic sci fi nerd. Seriously, though, Geddy sings the last note in that live version, but in the studio version he fucking screams it, it's the best ending for a song and an album ever.

I'm going to have to look into some Fugazi again, I didn't know they ever did an instrumental.

Flea, the bassist of the CP, thinks he's a lead guitar player AND, if some lead guitar player dares act LIKE a lead guitar player, Flea will knock him.

I really like the group (and Flea's playing) but when I saw the interview where Flea denigrated some transient replacement for the drug-addled Frusciante as a "rock guitar player" it totally changed my POV of Flea and the group.

Well, RHCP is more of a funk band than a rock band, IMO, and in funk the electric bass is often the lead while the guitar does the rythm.
