Paint Chips Peeling PSA from the early 70's
Posted by: Way Back When ()
Date: February 26, 2011 05:02PM

When I was a kid and first starting watching television, there used to be a public service announcement about lead based paint and the dangers of eating the chips. It must have been 1971 or 1972 but I still remember the jingle which was sung by a brother in 70's R&B style-

"Paint chips peeling, from my ceiling....landlords lazy and I'm half crazy, 'cause my baby's dead..."

It has been nearly 40 years and I still remember that jingle, it was really very dark to think of ghetto kids eating paint chips and dying from it.

We've Googled and tried Youtube. Any chance some long time local here remembers this one?

Hi, I'm Troy Maclure. You may remember from such educational films such as "Here Comes The Metric System" and "Lead Paint: Tasty, But Deadly".

Woah, didn't expect ANYONE to remember that commercial! I remember it very well and also have been searching for the song / jingle. PLEASE SOMEONE FIND THIS !!! I seem to remember a visual in the commercial with a scene of an empty wooden baby crib (the part where 'my baby's dead'). Pretty ironic because in later years those types of cribs were banned because kids heads got stuck between the slats.

Paint chips peelin'
from the ceiling
by my baby's bed.

Eatin' paint and plaster,
took him to the doctor.

Convulsions, lead poisonin'
ghetto malaria
why Lord, why?

Landlord lazy,
an' I'm half crazy,
'cause my baby's dead . . .

I heard that one on the breaks from Capt.20 and UltraMan as a kid. Thanks for the lyrics, I can probably hum a few bars.

Creepy ad, reminds me of the old "It's Alive" B movies in the 70's with the mutant killer babies.

Ultraman ruled when I was a 5 to 8 year old. Who needed that crummy CGI shit back then? Ultraman was as real as anything.

I forgot all about the opening of the show and the reverse of the paint mixing that ends up spelling out the title. I thin the same Japs who sang the Speed Racer theme also did Ultraman, it was funny.

Even when I was a little kid we used to mock the bad audio dubbing.

Never thought to look for it on Youtube.

"paint chips peelin'" ad - invariably followed by one for Jhoon Rhee:

"When you take Jhoon Rhee self defense;
Then you too can say;
Nobody bothers me;
Nobody bothers me;
Jhoon Rhee means might for right!"

My favorite was a group would dance around and sing "Don't take another toke of that love boat, don't take another toke of that love boat".

Not sure what effect that had if any on the sales of marijuana dipped in PCP.

Wow, I had no idea other folks are trying to find the "paint chips peeling" psa, too! That's how I found this forum, trying to find a clip of it somewhere. I'm beginning to think it was strictly a local psa: I'm 53 and remember it well, and was trying to describe it to my husband last night. I thought it odd that he has no recollection of it, even though his family lived in Northern Virginia in the early 70s. Then I remembered he's a little older than me (he's almost 57), so he was probably away at college during the year(s) this psa aired. Either way, I sure hope a copy of it still exists somewhere, and that it eventually makes its way online.

My neighbor took her kid to Mortons to shop for school clothes, I think it was in SE DC. Poor kid took all kind of abuse over that. The family wasnt poor but I think his mom gambled the household money away.

I was just sitting here talking to a co-worker about random stuff and some how we go on the subject of led poisoning and I asked if she remembered this commercial from our childhood but her had never heard of it so, I started googling so I could show here and found this site instead. It looks like that PSA affected everyone who saw it the same way. I was around 5 or 6 at the time and when I think about it, I can remember how I felt back then when it would come on. A very sad and scary feeling for a child.

60 minutes did an episode showing allot of inner city people were suing american companies for lead dangers to get free home upgrades and even making their kids eat lead to get a multi-million dollar suit

in the 80's 90's the "adults" (fucking democrats) left the bank doors opened and allowed many multi-million dollar suits to occur and be paid out

today the gov stalks anyone that complains, and sends them a bill

(it was true babies shouldn't eat paint chips regularly they are more susceptible, small ammt maybe ok, regularly no. however it's also true no adult in their right mind cannot scrape and dispose of paint chips in reach of a baby crib or put stain on a deck which they were getting inner-city freeby they didn't even pay for)

--------------------------------

if you are my age you'd remember the now and then, and ignore the revisionist HISTORY, right ?

This must be the most effective jingle ever. I grew up in the DC area and am 46. Of course I watched Ultraman on channel 20!
My sister and I still sing the "paint chip song" when we see each other.
It is burned into our minds.
I feel very lucky to have grow up in the 70s and been a teen in the 80's. They were great times with a lot of freedom. I feel sorry for kids today as it is a much harder time to grow up in...

Paint chips peelin'
From the ceilin'
By my baby's bed
Eatin' paint and plaster
I took him to the doctor
Convulsions
Lead poison
The ghetto malaria-a-a
Why, Lord, Why?
Landlord's lazy
And I'm half crazy
'Cause my baby's dead

I'm looking, looking.

Gonna find that shit this morning.

So I'm not crazy. I remember this jingle from being a kid too. When I recant this to other people they think I'm lying because they can't believe there was a commercial that had those words in it.

I lived in Philly in the mid 60s to early 70s and I saw the PSA on TeeVee too. I can't forget the lyrics. They are quite a period piece. I'm willing to bet no one had a VCR to record it back then and the all the studio tapes are destroyed but you never know.

Meanwhile I have seen a more recent video about lead that blows my mind even more than Paintchips Peelin' blues did:

That was an AWESOME commercial. I can't believe no one can find a trace of it. I remember there was a lone picture of JFK over the empty crib. Eerie, but also kind of hilarious. I'm likely going to hell.

I couldn't find the PSA so I recorded a cover of it as best I could. I don't remember all of the verses since I was only 6 or something when I watched it on TV.

I too remember it well. I heard it on the radio in the Baltimore area. I remember most of the lyrics and wanted to hear the whole thing again.

Speaking of TV ads, one that really stands out is "Mr Yuk is mean, Mr Yuk is GREEN!"

I'm forty seven years old and still have this commercial in my head!
Maybe it was played a lot here in DC. Somebody, please find it and put it on YouTube! Good luck!

There was a PSA from the early 70s with a Latino boy being dragged out of bed in the morning. The father said, "Jose, we have to go to school." The kid replied, "I don't wanna go to school." The kid then gets laughed at when he reads aloud in class.

Can't find this PSA anywhere. Does anybody remember it?

no i dont remember it - they only gave the warning as a legal precaution

i saw a 60 Minutes episode uncovering how some nigga was claiming she didn't kill her baby

but the fact was she refused to clean the home and supposedly the child could reach peeling paint from the crib - but during video interview it didn't appear possible the kid could have gotten enough

either way: completely her fault for being too lazy to get out a paint brush AND WORK

what i remember is it being a democrat scheme to sue

just as they did with abspestos - another lawsuit freinzy, who's real health repercussions were never as serious as:

mining

working in dusty areas w/o mask (as many men did up until the late 80's)

working with paints / thinners / pesticides without much/any protection (as many med did up until the late 80's)

working in factories with all kinds of shit and ventillation that was not meant to keep factory workers from breathing the mess

democrat "facist" lawyers who did "en masse" suits and kept at the money - millions - bankrupting companies - but never paying those injured

then in the 90's democrats did multi-million dollar suits against the gov, a whole stream of them for total bullshit whimsical comlaints were paid out by corrupt judges ....

the Supreme Court of the United States had to stop and make an emergency law such bullshit illegal, jury or not, approved by congress or not

they continually attacked the infrastructure, the democrats

STILL TODAY in VA democrats are stealing all the "victim funds" that are supposed to be avail. for victims of crime in distress (a form of aid to keep one safe until other aid is rendered)

stolen

---------------------------

YOUR FULL OF SHIT saying "you personally remember it being a problem". it wasn't for you and you dont know it ever was a real problem: for all you know it was all media hype and frivolous lawsuit attempts

the real deal: who got paid out and why ... and records of that (actual lawsuits of the paint industry that won in court due to a real death) are probably not easy to come by

why? because often the terms of agreement in such cases is that the money winner never disclose if they won, what they won, or why they won it

After finding this thread, I feel like all those people on Close Encounters of the 3rd kind, who all had same vision of Devil's Tower and felt compelled to draw or sculpt it.

The Old "Paint Chips Peeling from the celing" PSA that ran in DC for perhaps 3-4 years. I saw it first in 1972 or 73 when we first moved to NoVa.

I remember singing it at the family dinner table when dad asked "What is he singing?" Mom: "its something from Tv, Stop it, that just sounds horrid".

I was about 5 or so, so the malaria line didnt quite register, so I know the song, up to that point, and afterwards with "Why Lord, why..."

I also remember a Chevrolet dealership commercial where the newly wed wife still wearing a wedding dress wanted a white car, and the husband wanted a blue car. So, they are seen driving away in a 1/2 white, 1/2 blue car. (Orsmond/Ormund?? Chevrolet) "You always get your way, at Orsman Chev-ro-lay"
"They've got service and selection and values all you like so come down to Ormon and drive one home today, You always get your way-- at Orsman Chevrolet."

We moved from NoVa in 1977 and for some reason these commercials have permanently imprinted on my brain.

I have been searching for this PSA for years. I have even asked local broadcasters (incl. Captain 20 himself) if they remember it (incredibly, they don't). I have also checked in with local video archivists. None of them have it. I even looked at hours of local DC programming (most WTTG) that is available at the Nixon Library. Again, came up with nothing. But here is what I HAVE LEARNED: The songwriter of "Paint Chips" was the late Charles Blackwell. He wrote the song especially for the March 28, 1971 Rochester, NY "Mass for Health and Life." The service was broadcast by the CBS radio network's program "World of Religion." And, yes, I have reached out to see if a copy of the program still exists. I have also reached out to the Charles Blackwell family, but no one ever got back to me. From the comments thread, it seems like the PSA ran on WDCA (Channel 20) in the DC television market. If anyone knows people who worked at Channel 20 during that era, they should reach out to them and ask if they remember it. Maybe they know some detail that can help us track down who produced the PSA. That would be a great lead to pursue.

Some people on this thread insist that Gil-Scott Heron recorded the song. I have found no evidence of this. Charles Blackwell, the songwriter, was the first to perform it in 1971. He is most likely the person singing it in the TV PSA. This newspaper clip is from the Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle from March 29, 1971.

You could have convinced me it was GSH because of the style and production. Possibly it was influenced by him and that was the sound Blackwell sought.

LOL wtf am I saying? Haven't heard Paint Chips in 40 yrs, but I'm remembering it like GSH since someone told me to.

It was written by Blackwell but performed by Heron.

I was singing to my daughters and this line ('paint chips peeling...by my baby's bed') just oozed out of my brain (I had a couple egg nogs) so I looked it up and ended up here. I grew up in the DC area. Perhaps it was a local thing. I'll post here and hope there will someday be a DC relevant video like I can find of Jun Rhee 'nobody bother me.'
