As of right now they're suited up and in the orbiter- 2 to 3 hours away from liftoff-

Jeez. The lengths Mark Kelly will go to get away from his wife.

By the way it is STS-133 today not STS-134. And Kelly will be on the next one, not this flight.

What a gorgeous liftoff! MECO/Preliminary orbit achieved.

i was watching the coverage and the commentator blamed the end of the shuttle program on the Challenger disaster.. is this true? I thought it had to do with reduced budgets...

Did any of you catch the tile that fell off?

The Shuttle program lived on for 25 years after the Challenger disaster, so that's not the reason. The International Space Station is almost completed, there's no need to haul all that stuff up there anymore. Single-launch vehicles can serve that purpose. We were supposed to develop the Constellation rockets to do that, but the program was canceled 2 years ago. Instead we'll rely on Russia's Soyuz vehicles to transport people to the ISS, until we build something of our own. Our Shuttle will no longer have a viable purpose. A re-launchable vehicle with a big payload isn't needed. Even if there was a budget for it, what would we do with it? There are other "cheaper" ways of accomplishing what is planned.

Yeah, actually there were two pieces that fell off, not sure if they were tiles or foam. I believe it was foam though and it didn't fall off until it was well into the air, evidently that makes a big difference. Still waiting to hear what NASA says about it.
