Chipped bone in knuckle - Floating Bone fragment
Posted by: Knuckle Fragment ()

Hello, I just hit my knuckle on a hard object about 20 minutes ago and I have noticed that I have a bump on the side of my pointing finger knuckle, going towards my thumb. it can move around a little but it stays in the same area. I was wondering if this can heal on its own and if it does will there be problems with joints down the road??

I did a little research and I think I chipped where the metacarpal and proximal meed, on the proximal side, where it gets bigger at the joint to join to the metacarpal, I believe I chipped that off and its floating around the joint area/ behind the knuckle on the metacarpal
The fragment doesnt move that much, it stays pretty much in the same place but if i push on it kinda bobs a little. There is little to no pain just bruised pain

Please advise

If you have insurance (or are here illegally), go to the emergency room. Swelling will increase over time.

You received damaged on metacarpal bone 2, there are 5 of them. I would definitely get it checked out because if it's where the metacarpal 2 and proximal phalanx meet, it will only get worse. You hit the base of the proximal phalanx.just for your information. So yeah, get it checked out especially since the metacarpals basically flex the fingers. Your proper palmar digital nerve might be damaged too.

Yes, thank you Kid. I am curious to find out as I have a little of the same problem. Mine isnt as extreme as his but I was fist fighting with my brother and well I think I chipped my bone in my pinky knuckle. It feels like a bruised pain when I punch the soft punching bag or press firmly on the knuckle. Its off to the right of the pinky knucle right on the end, and well the way I found out it was chipped i push the sore spot in the up direction and that little piece of bone moves around and well I got queezy and sick to my stomach so I quickly popped it back in place and have not messed with it since. Please someone tell me How i should heal this properly. Its on my right hand and Im afriad because its been weeks and its still sore. I practice boxing and I cant even hit the soft bag anymore without pain.

i have a piece of broken glass, (small, 1/8"cubed i'd say) under the skin of my knuckle.

the first week after the injury a small piece of glass came out of the cut i had. sorry if i'm turning you on. i've heard that shrapnel and foreign objects will eventually work their way out naturally, anyone know if this is true?

i have insurance but abhor doctors. its been over 2 months now and i'm starting to think it is time. it hurts when i bump it or fiddle with it, which i do with great frequency.

I got in a fight a bit over 1 year age at the bar and i beat up a certan person and remember where the scar came from. Well the last week the scar has been getting sore and a small 2 bumps has gotten hard. Well I took a razor blade and lanced one bump and part of the dudes tooth came out. Trippy. could tell it was a tooth partical because of the decay on one side. Well I lanced the other one at my friend Vietnam Vet jo and another peace came out. Wash it out with alcohol and quit giving money to the doctors.

if the knuckle is still swollen after 3 years, you may want to have that checked.

Lol!

My wife had a strange whitened under-the-skin lump on her left wrist - right at the radiocarpal joint (if that whole area is called that):

arm.jpg

Then the other day after the last ice storm, she went out on the front porch to "test the ice" and, not surprisingly, fell hard, landing (thankfully) on her left hand rather than her head.

Click!! (that's a thick-sounding "click", BTW)

Strange whitened lump gone.

After 30 years.

==================

Our theory is her wrist was somehow dislocated about 30 years ago when one her brothers very roughly yanked on her hand during either a fight or "play"...and had been like that ever since (sometimes causing her pain). Though her current physician recommended she visit some sort of specialist who would handle such things (or bone spurs or whatever), she never went.

Not necessary now!

Was probably a ganglion cyst in her wrist. Old school methods to clear these consisted of smashing them with a heavy book. My aunt has done that. I have a similar lump in the same spot and I'm tempted to smash it.

You'll be just fine.
I smashed my right fist repetitively on a cinder block wall when
I was in a fit of rage. The resulting damage afforded me
super thick bones due to crushing injuries, giving me a
right hand that can deliver knock out blows with the
destructive power of an anvil. True story.

Fuck the book method of removing a ganglion. Get it drained and post it on the internet.

I agree with FFX_MD and Warhawk.

eesh just makes me laugh... so sad. Will he ever grow up?

Maureen needs to learn to live with the pain. Try ibuprofen (no more than 200mg per day).

ProVallone, she still has her right hand ; )

The Ibuprofen might help. Apply some cold compress or cucumber slices to alleviate inflamation. Try to minimize use of extremity for a while. Loose bodies are common and can be plucked out with little discomfort with arthoscopy. See another bona fide handwrist specialist.

Right. Just point out the fucking obvious and pretend like you know something.

Dipshit.

The piece of bone will go away on it's own eventually. I had one a few years ago on my knuckle and it probably took about 3 months for it to disappear. What I believe happens is that the body thinks of it maybe as a foreign object after its been chipped off, and it slowly deteriorates it.

My g-cyst in my hand (between thumb and pointer finger) went away on own. Doc recommended not smashing or draining. Only way they mess w it is if it presses on nerves causing pain and immobility. I think mine hung around for a year.
