AAA membership, worth it?
Posted by: toe jam driver ()

Okay ive had AAA for 2 years never needed it. I got cheaper flights hotels and car rental through Amex travel which is free with credit card. Seems like a waste of money but not sure. What do you guys think?

Myself, it came in handy a number of times during this winter, towing. Also busted my right wrist, could not change a tire. They came pronto. For me it is a good safety precaution.

If you have some other service already, through your rental company or whatever, probably not worth it. But if you drive your own car around and it's paid off it is a good idea. I've had it for a few yers and I've used it twice to bail me out of a jam.

It is not cheap but I have AAA. In the last 10 years I have only had to use it 5 times, but it sure made it easier then if I didn't have it. Has it cost me more money then if I just paid for the service?? Maybe. But peace of mind and the fact that one phone call gets me or my wife out of a bad situation is worth it to me. To each there own.

If your old like me and you join AARP they have roadside assist for extra 40 a year. it has worked well for me twice.

I had AAA for fifteen years and finally got sick of 1) ever-increasing fees, put toward 2) ever-increasing political lobbying, which never once 3) increased the towing distance of two or three miles, totally useless in NoVA. They have started other products that I don't feel is part of their mission, such as auto insurance and other stuff I have a feeling I'm subsidizing with the increasing fees.

The membership starting hitting dollar amounts that were just stupid. This year I didn't renew and I'm trying out Allstate Auto Club. I just want the roadside assistance, I don't need to pay for lobbyists.

I didn't know that AARP was that cheap. I dropped them years ago and stayed with AAA for my needs. I like the AAA Plus, that gets my car flatbedded anywhere within 50 miles, not just to the nearest repair place. This was a big deal for me because I have an antique car that I can have flatbedded to my home if anything fails. I had that need one time and it made the situation much better.

That is the total reason I dropped AARP.

"2) ever-increasing political lobbying"

AAA lobbys only for larger and more highways, supports defunding transit, and is against environmental and mileage requirements.

That's fine, but it's of no interest to those of us who just want a tow when our water pump starts spewing antifreeze. You can form a seperate activist group for that political crap.

I used AAA locksmith services one time when I managed to lock myself out of my car. He came in about 15 minutes and got right into my car. Didn't cost me anything, it was covered by my membership.

Definitely worth it.

EDIT: Before you go with AAA though, make sure your car insurance policy doesn't already have roadside assistance; I had roadside assistance under my GEICO policy. Also, many new car warranties come with roadside assistance for a certain number of years.

Worth it to me, peace of mind if my wife has a flat, dead battery. etc. The hotel and other discounts are nice.

agree with a lot Big K said. I've had AAA Plus for years now. I see the general membership is pretty much worthless and tired at this point of the increases every year for AAA Plus. didn't seem to be that way and tired of all the other shit AAA has gotten into
Had AAA 30 years but just about fed up
How is the Allstate Auto Club? Seems like they constantly change how it works.

Of course, when I had a shit car that broke down a lot I found AAA helpful but now having a far reliable car I have little use for it catch 22

And lobbies *for* speed cameras, red light cameras and increased fines for traffic violations. In short, they kind of suck.

I'd say save your money and put in cell phone the number of a good locksmith and a good towing company.

Well to tell you the truth I don't run red lights or speed so I am not totally against the enforcement of the laws. So I am OK with this.

You're not thinking straight. Speed cameras are not used for enforcing the law, they're used to generate revenue. The money is so enticing that some towns have been caught shortening the time of the yellow lights to create more violations, which in turn causes mroe accidents.

For the most part I do not agree with you. Every time I see an idiot blow a light I just hope an pray the fool will get a ticket before he really screws-up. I know they make money but 99% of the time the person is totally guilty of what they are being charged with. That is called laws. I have no problem with this.

huge fan of AAA. years ago the truck i had broke down. wouldn't jump, no money to tow etc. etc. had two mechanics come out - each told me i threw a rod and needed a 1000 bones to rebuild. for six months i let it sit and used another car for transportation. then it was time to move. having AAA for my other vehicle, i used one of my three tows to get the truck to my new place. when the AAA tow guy inquired as to the problem i gave him the lowdown. he popped the hood, looked it over, asked me for six bucks then took off. an hour later he was back with a sparkplug and my truck was purring like a kitten. i spent some of the money i'd saved and bought the guy a beer.

yeah, i'm a fan of AAA.

Was going to write the same thing - don't get AAA - most car insurance will include it for like $20-30 p/6 months. Or if you buy a new car it's usually a part of your warranty.

If you're driving an old car or have cheapo insurance then perhaps consider it.

Nice try, but a water pump works one minute and the next minute it's leaking and you don't know when you're driving until you see the temperature guage start to climb. So consider yourself better informed thanks to me, now.

No one is disputing that having a card and a number to call when your car has trouble is a good thing. My point is AAA isn't the only game in town, and if what you want is emergency service and not paying for lobbying or subsidizing their insurance program advertizing then there are other choices. If AAA came within ten or fifteen percent of the other choices I may consider them again, but I'm paying much less now.

edit: one thing to consider themuse is that they guy who helped you isn't an employee of AAA, he is likely from a shop that has an agreement with AAA and he got the call. He may participate in other programs too.

I use it and like it. Had 1 flat and two jumps in the past 15 months. That's about 250 in service.

I get hotel discounts from this as well which are good (I do NOT do priceline and I do not do the "pay in advance" hotel rates).

I did the pay in advance thing a couple of times when Hotels.com started. The experience wasn't very good.

Definitely worth it! It is just like any other insurance, you're glad you have when you need it. I lived in Newark DE we broke down just outside of D.C. The tow charge was $20.00 with AAA premium. Consider the fact that a tow truck hookup is around $30-$40.00 PLUS $3.00 per mile! It was just over 100 miles. You do the math. And, used it again in the same year. I am re-upping!

I have AAA for several years and used it for car repairs, besides towing and I have also used it for travel advantages if it suits the purpose. Even at some resturants.

While increasingly expensive, AAA has been a good backup for car problems with door locks, batteries, towing. Travel books and maps are still a nice feature, although you can do a lot on line (AAA.com) without being a member. Discounts are nice, although I found AARP to be provide better rates in some cases (you don't have to be over 50 to be AARP--I wasn't). Nowadays AAA may be more expensive with less value given the options; however, I still remain a member.

My fucking car broke down on I-81 near Blacksburg. AAA came right out and towed me to a shop and the shop said it would need a part to fix it so the AAA driver took me to a Hampton inn and dropped me off. He even came and got me the next day to take me back to my car. I had to pay the shop to fix the car but AAA charged me nothing. AAA is good as a motherfucker and I will always have it.

CarShield, I used it to jump a battery a number of times, I don't think CarShield covers batteries. Plus you can renew a Drivers License on AAA
