Jim Webb is one of the most decorated Marines in Viet Nam and I have total respect for everything he has done. He also had written some really good books over the years. I am really sorry to see him go. He has been a voice for all Vets.

My guess is that he decided not to run again because he didn't want to lose. His votes for Obamacare, the stimulus and some of the other big issues that ousted many of his collegues this last election didn't sit to well with Virginians.

He's also one of the sponsors of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, even though I'm way beyond the age where I'd be eligible, anything that can be done for Vets is a big win in my book.

Webb is the reason Virgina got all the tech company contracts. I hope the next replacement can get Northern Virgina the same government and defense contracts. It would suck to lose the tech companies in Northern Virgina, that would really hurt.

Companies are still relocating here (Northrup Grumann) to be closer to their customer (USG). We got another influx during the telecom boom of the 90's, with companies like Sprint, UUNet, and AOL.
When given a choice, most companies either start or relocate to NoVa versus DC or MD due to lower taxes and proximity to DOD (for Gov't contractors).

I was thinking that George Allen was politically finished, but if his opponent is a dem who supported ObamaCare and the stimulus, I think he has a good line of attack.
Webb is a decent guy and loves his country, I think he followed a really stupid and destructive trend with Obama and knew he would pay for it.

Webb is an arrogant ass who cared more about his own personal priorities than representing Virginia. He got in on a fluke, and it at least is smart enough to know you can't get re-elected with his kind of attitude.

I appreciate Jim Webb's independent streak, but he is a pretty crappy senator. You just can't pass legislation without building relationships. As unpleasant as it is, that's the hard truth.
He also has priority issues. For example, he is obsessed with Burma. I don't like the Burmese government either, but I just don't think that is a major deal in this day and age.
I voted for Webb last time around because Allen ran a lousy campaign and took his re-election as a given. Overall though, Allen was an OK senator and a good governor. I am willing to at least give him a listen this time around, but I will be watching macaca carefully.

I signed a petition a long time ago just to let him run, because of the fact that he was a Veteran, and he worked in the Reagan administration. However, I really hated some of the leftist rhetoric that he started jumping on the bandwagon with during his campaign for Senator. I didn't vote for him in the end, but I do think that's he's been a fairly moderate Senator, similar to Senator Mark Warner. I think he's been alright for Virginia. If Tim Kaine manages to replace him, though, we're all screwed.
FYI- Anyone calling George Allen "Racist" is oblivious to the fact that his most ardent and vocal defender was a black guy who worked with him. Allen isn't racist, he's just not overly politically correct. I guess that offends some people, but I still like him (I've met him personally before).

Running for govenor makes sense, especially if you have aspirations for the presidency. I don't know that he actually does but it does give food for thought. I'm trying to think but I can't remember the last president that had been a Senator, I'm sure there must be somebody I'm leaving out, of course Obama was a Senator but for only a short period of time. I mean someone who ascended from the ranks of the senate.
I'll tell you this, although I'm not a Webb supporter, I'd rather see him run than Hillary.
