I wondered the same thing, dood...
I thought a chipped tooth would be like a chipped windshield.... in that it would continue to crack and weaken with time...
My dentist said that teeth are not like windshields.... He offered to fix my tooth if I wanted it, but it would be strictly cosmetic...
If you're OK with how your tooth looks, there's no point in getting the chip fixed...

My dog was enthusiastically displaying her affection for me when her head bumped into my face, slightly chipping one tooth and possibly breaking my nose. My nose had a large bump on it for a while; now there's just a little white scar. Luckily, it's not very noticeable. What made this particular event worse was a big pimple that had popped up on my chin the day before the chipped tooth and swollen nose. Odd, since I'm not a pimple person.
Anyway, I wouldn't leave the house for a week, since I looked like I'd just returned from a war zone.
I tried to fix my chipped tooth with an emery board and I think I might have smoothed it out a bit.

If all you have is a chipped tooth (i.e. bit came off) then there really is no harm in that.
If you got punched vertically as opposed to laterally (upper cut sort as opposed to straight/jab) there could be a fracture into your gum. If you're that concerned have your dentist take an Xray to see. If you have a fracture into your gum it will eventually widen, become infected and have to be removed unless you treat it now or before it becomes a real issue. If you have a chip off the top of your tooth missing, then all is well and that's purely cosmetic.

uh, any trauma caused to the teeth can eventually lead to gum damage as well. if the chip is deep enough it could expose the nerves in your teeth making it very painful to eat, drink, or even breathe and could very easily become rotten do to exposure of bacteria. if that happens the tooth will need to be drilled or completely removed.

For a chipped tooth to lead to gum damage it would have to be

It had gotten much better in England for a while but several years ago cuts were made and it's fallen back again. But yeah stereotypically speaking I would say English people do have much worse teeth than Americans do.
It is partly to do with the NHS - the scaled back rationed care makes it difficult for people to schedule appointments other than routine care (months in advance), emergency treatments under this scheme are done usually promptly but anything else one is better off going to a private doctor for care. Those of you against national health will love me saying that, but I say it as it is - and public dentistry in England could do with a lot of improvements.
Another reason for the poor teeth so common - is the smoking, tea/coffee drinking + sweets. I know England was one of the top sweets consumers for ages, don't know if they still rank tops or not. The general culture overall just didn't facilitate healthy teeth.
So I'd say - again generally speaking English people do have much worse teeth than their American counterparts.

YOU'RE NOT INSCINUATING THAT DRINKING A CHEMICAL THAT IS SUPPOSED
TO BE APPLIED TOPICALLY TO THE TEETH, HAS BEEN BENNEFICIAL AT ALL ARE YOU?
BECAUSE I HIGHLY DOUBT IT.
FIRST OF ALL, THE LEVELS OF FLUORIDE IN THE DRINKING WATER ARE TOO
LOW TO HAE ANY REAL EFFECT ON THE TEETH, BUT THE LEVELS ARE HIGH
ENOUGH TO HAVE DAMAGING RESIDUAL CHEMICAL BUILD UP EFFECTS ON
YOUR BODIES OVERALL HEALTH.
I BELIEVE THE GERMANS DID TESTING WITH FLUORIDE.
