I would say simple progress. From one design you continue till that product is hopefully perfected with the aid of available technology. It pretty much just a case of imagination and a human mind doing what it was created to do.

Another one was putting scores up on a TV screen throughout a game. Obviously some of that was due to CG technology. But it seems to me it could have been a regular thing tens years before it became commonplace.
