Personal Property Tax
Posted by: fuck a duck ()

I bought my first car a couple months ago and everything was going good until this "Personal Property Tax Bill" came in the mail. I'm a young guy so this stuff is relatively new to me. What the fuck is this bullshit? Why am I being taxed just for owning a car? I live in Virginia by the way... Dunno how it is in other states

that's life bro.

Your parents didn't expain this to you?

Towns need revenue (money) to survive..so they can keep up the

parks that you enjoy..and whenever you feel like you live in a

pretty town.....that's the tax dollars working.

Time for you to get some more education and get a better paying job. Working at the Taco Bell drive-thru isn't enough to pay the rent and all the associated bills that one encounters while living in Northern Virginia. Once you hit your stride and start making over $60K (without a family), you'll be able to start seeing some relief.

let's not judge. He didn't say anything about where he worked or where he

went to school.

Conie, you as well as most everyone knows that personal property tax bills on automobiles are much lower today than they were 10 years ago. We'll all thankful there is some form of relief, so we don't have to pay the full amount (since 70% of the bill has been reduced). If this individual wants to complain, then he/she needs to suck up and take it. Plus, reading into the materials about the county or state that you live in isn't such a bad thing. Being informed can benefit you so you won't be so surprised when such bills arrive. Another thing that always gets me is people and their yearly taxes. Some will exclaim how they're getting a $3,000 refund. What idiots! The Government has used $3,000 of your money over the year and you're not getting a dime of interest either. People need to be more "in touch" with reality. America is really failing when it comes to their knowledge about some of the basic facts of life.

The personal property tax is a lame holdover from the British colonial era. States founded later don't have this problem.

I work in retail and it pays shit ($9.85/hr). I've been working full-time hours for over a year but those cheapasses won't give me benefits. I didn't give a fuck in High School (2.8 gpa) so I'm stuck at NOVA community college for now trying to transfer to Mason. I don't see myself making $60k anytime soon...

Keep your chin up. I didn't give a crap in high school either. Then again, my father was dying and it was quit hard to focus my last 3 years of high school due to his eventual death. However, I didn't let that stop me. I went into the military 3 days after H.S. graduation. After 4 years of active duty, I separated from the military, got married, bought our first house, was hired on by a good corporation - which paid for my Bachelor's degree. I realized during this period of my life that I could care about education and ended up graduating with a great GPA. To this day, I really haven't suffered any set-backs in my career and am able to provide for a great home and great quality of life for my family and myself.

How much was the tax then, like a total of under $100? At least you bought an inexpensive car. But yes, property tax is a fact of life. And when you get out of college and can make more money, you'll be taxed a higher percentage the more you make. And if you want to save or invest some of it, you'll be taxed on the returns on that money. And if you make enough to eventually buy a house, you will be charged real estate tax every year based on the value of your property.

Taxes are an aspect of living life, sucks to pay them but something has to pay for the operation of government and services.

You will be taxes at a higher rate on the last dollars you make, not all dollars you make.

And if you keep the investment, or reinvest the dividends, for more than a year, you will be taxed at the lowest possible rate, 15%

Built into your mortgage payment, if you cary a mortgage. If you buy the house outright or inherit one without a mortgage, suck it up and pay the taxes without complaining. Besides, it is best to keep the neighbors kids in school and not robbing your house.

Taxes fund the military. Not paying them or bitching about them is not supporting our troops. Why do you hate America?

It's a stupid and administratively expensive way to tax people. Virginia should just have a local sales tax like other states, but alas, sometimes Virginia is just ass backwards on some things.

Some people prefer this kind of tax because you can minimize it by buying a crappy old car. But if you live anywhere in N. VA, you have to still pass an emissions test (in S. VA, you can have a crappy old card that spews filthy exhaust and you're fine, because air doesn't circulate)

It is a shitty tax--no doubt. I'm embarrassed to say I actually voted for Jim Gillmore because of his promise to get rid of it. Guess how that worked out?

Let them introduce this. I'll then make all of my purchases off of the Internet and only buy my food locally.

Spoken like a true fucknut. I didn't say any of the taxes I described were bad or unnecessary, I said the opposite.

But he forces me to correct his ramblings in case anyone is dumb enough to take Radiophile's posts as financial advice.

Not true at all. PLENTY of phaseouts occur at higher income levels that raise the overall tax burden. I don't get any of the child tax credit, for example while lower-income households get the full credit. That's two grand I'm paying in that others don't, I'd say that applies pretty well the the first dollar I make as well as the last dollar, as both added up to phase me out of the tax credit you get to enjoy.

15% applies to the second part of the statement if you hold the assets for over a year. Cash savings are taxed at income, not at capital gains rate no matter how long you have saved it. Reinvested dividends are taxed at 15% if they are qualified dividends, but cap gains distributions (reinvested or not) may not be. Short-term cap gains distributions are taxed at income, they have to be long-term cap gains to qualify for the 15% rate. Plus dummy, 15% is a lot higher than the car tax rate the original poster was talking about so characterizing 15% as cheap is dumb in this context.

First, the tax isn't invisible unless you are an idiot. Your mortgage payment is your principal, interest, and (if you pay it) PMI to your lender. The other holdbacks for insurance and taxes are a "service" provided by your lender if they are there, which leads to #2, holdbacks aren't the case for everyone. I don't have an escrow account at all attached to my mortgage, things like insurance and taxes are not "built in." Just because you consider it "built-in" and invisible in YOUR case does not make it the same for anyone else. That's like saying sales tax doesn't exist because it is included in the total when you buy something, when clearly you are paying more than is what on a price tag in a store. I mean you can certainly say that, but it would only make sense to a moron.

This is life in Virginia. Actually, you can thank Jim Gilmore for cutting most all of it. 15 years ago, a $20000 car would have cost close to $1000 in taxes. How does that grab you?

The amount of the credit is reduced (but not below zero) by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction thereof) that the taxpayer's modified adjusted gross income exceeds the threshold amount. The threshold amount is:

$110,000 in the case of a joint return
$75,000 in the case of an unmarried individual
$55,000 in the case of a married individual filing a separate return

That and the fact you claim top pay taxes generated from an interest bearing savings account that pays close to 0%....

you are making money so STFU and pay your taxes.
