South Korean marines and special forces are two of the toughest kick-ass outfits out there. During the Vietnam conflict the Republic of Korea (ROK) distinguished itself in numerous battle situations, they are a very effective military organization and a loyal ally.

I have to agree. I found the ROK Navy sailors and officers to be smart, proficient and dedicated. There are no slackers there.

Koreans are a tough breed, I can't argue that. But the Japanese are another story, I had a relative who was a Marine on Iwo. He said they kick the shit out of the japs in hand to hand combat. That judo or karate or whatever martial arts they used was a load of cowshit.

Agreed, but if thats the fact why cant they completely take over defense of the DMZ? Free up our troops, I think 60 years later they could figure it out on their own.I hope to god we dont still have troops in Iraq 50 years from now holding their hands.

I don't think the U.S., China, ROK, Japan and RUS want a war in Korea. It's much more complicated than you make it. Advanced countries like Korea don't get into existential wars just for shits and giggles.

This also presented a good demonstration for North Korea.

It's the sheer logistics of it all. North Korea has a million man army, and China has double that (Those are just the active duty components!). Most folks I've talked to have agreed that nukes are necessary in a war against them, especially if they rush the border.

1) There are two million of "them", and about 350,000 of "us."

2) realated to #1, attacking us means, inviting the million of "us" into the party. Good deterrance, eh?

And we should care about them why? Capt. Oh must be lurking around here somewhere beating his hairless scrawny slope chest. ROK are good cannon fodder. They take orders well and, like all dinks, will sacrifice themselves by the thousands to take an objective. Pull our troops out of Korea, put them on our Southern border and shoot to kill down there. The Chinese aren't fucking around folks. If we keep up with this pacifist BS, we'll all be munching two bowls of rice and day and living 30 to a room in barracks on top of the factory floor.

We should be arming the shit out the Indians and providing them with advanced technology. Screw Pakistan. Let the Indians be our proxy while we develop über advanced weapon systems that put us back up 50 years ahead of the Chicoms (laser and other light-based technologies). If you dumbass Obama sheep think the Chicoms are our friends or just our competitors, you're smoking crack. They are our enemies. Ask any high-ranking Chink general. He'll tell you that, within 25 years, their entire military expects a full scale war with the US over Taiwan if they can't cripple us economically by then. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!!

Sorry if this truth hurts. G2 knows all but can't tell you. The brass knows but won't act. The civies in charge don't want to hear it. Bush was briefed and he knew and at least kept China at arms length while searching for new weapon systems. Obama has sold us out and his entire command structure truly believes that they can wait out the Chicoms and that their political system will moderate before we have to fight them. That is crazy. We can not afford 4 more years of this. Vote this clown out. You have been warned.

Capt. Oh's small weenie now running silent again........out

Spoken like a true coward who's never heard a shot fired in anger. Hump a ruck for 30 miles while getting shot at and come back to talk to us. Meanwhile, let the grown ups talk, barbie. The ROKs are tough. I was stationed there. You're a pussy. Now go to bed, maria.

Your argument works against you. It is a question of the same mentality, in essence the same DNA working against itself. Their political philosophy differs but the inborn traits remain the same, competent South Korea faces an equally competent North Korea. A third peacekeeping force would be required as a "buffer". Without that buffer, a major war would develope with China, the US alot of nations involved.

That is about the most stupid post I've read here. Ever.

Even during my tours on the DMZ three decades ago the 2ID was mostly a figurehead and symbolic, i.e. an attack on the ROK is an attack on US interests. We were not defending the Western Corridor by ourselves, the ROK Army was there in much greater numbers.

Since we withdrew the 3rd Bde and repositioned most of the 2ID south, this is even more so today.

The ROK military is disciplined and effective, the reserve force is pretty much every male not on active duty. With our forces committed to Iraq and Afghanistan they cannot rely on us to help defend against a North Korean invasion, but they've got things covered.

The only thing North Korea has that is any real threat is their artillery that can reach every populated center in South Korea. Their Navy and Air Force is practically non-existent and the North Korean Army has outdated and neglected equipment. Granted, their Army is huge, but all they could do is send human wave attacks across the 50 years worth of land mines.

They have tried tunneling underneath the DMZ for decades, but we have seismic equipment monitoring that, there wouldn't be any surprises.

The small number of US troops there may seem a token force, but they would go a long way against the piss poor military of North Korea.

Everything I've heard from people who've worked with ROK forces, all points to exactly what you've said. The ROK SOF are top-notch as well, and highly motivated, as well as disciplined (As you said). I'm glad to hear a consensus about the matter.

LOL. OK Capt Oh. If you say so. You presume much. Too much.

I understand your anger. Having such a small weenie must be very frustrating for you and your partner. I'm sure he's getting his jollies elsewhere so don't worry about him.
