the Dead Kennedys. I guess they are significant for punk rock but honestly, most of their songs are pretty annoying - mostly because of Jello Biafra's cartoon sounding voice.

I guess they were sorta cool on their first few records, a post-punk band that was doing something different. Then "The Edge" put on a fuckin cowboy hat and they released a bunch of pretentious shit like The Joshua Tree. Their stage names are stupid, they're not really that noteworthy as musicians, and their music is lame.
I'll give them credit for being a great band though. They've been doing it for 30 years and they've always seemed to be able to reinvent their sound to keep things fresh and interesting for their huge fanbase.

I hear you on the beatles. i am not sure how "great" they truly are but I cannot stand the grateful dead. Never understood their appeal beyond the drug culture and everytime I hear one of their songs I give it a chance but end up turning the radio station after about 30 seconds. They suck beyond belief.

Eric Clapton.
Great member of bands,Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the DOminoes . Clapton had a few solo bright spots but all of his shit sounds like a Bud Lite commercial now.
His slowed down versions of Layla and After Midnight were today unnecessary and self-indulgent. Plus his focus on the blues really aggravates me. This man was very integral in inventing the power trio and hard rock riffs as we know them, now he is content playing elevator like blues music for 60 year olds.

Yea, I'd have to go with the Beatles, but you have to examine them with a perspective on the past. The music now seems pretty lame and weak. However they were in view of their time, pretty great and will secure a place in history as a result of that.

The Monkees, those lovable mop tops of the 60s. They were pioneers in music and television who blazed the way for such campy cult favorites as HR Pufnstuf and the Banana Splits show.

The Doors are perfectly OK in small doses, but I never understood some peoples idolation of Jim Morrison.
The Lizard King! An American Poet! Just seems like a modestly talented artist type who killed himself with overindulgence at 27.
I also wish he'd have never lived in Alexandria so we could get a rest from that too.

I understand that artists tend to be way the fuck out there, and I appreciate that. Lennon's a very good example; legendary talent, legendary weirdness.
Now, Prince's not at that level, but he's on that level with weirdness. And It doesn't matter that his particular brand of freak sashays into the gay.
