This one came up a few weeks ago: Spalting. It's when wood becomes naturally colored by fungus. A woodworker I know was telling me about a project he was doing and said he was using spalted wood for some of it. I was like huh? Never knew there was a term for that.

Another one I can think of: Newel

A newel is the larger, sometimes decorative, post at the foot of a staircase handrail.

When I was a kid my grandmother would say stuff like "Go put this on the newel so I remember to take it upstairs later." I don't think I've ever heard anyone else use that word, but I always knew what it meant.

mullions

The wooden framework between the panes of a window.

If you have old-fashioned wood framed windows, you probably have real mullions. THe windows in my house are modern vinyl and have fake decorative mullions in between two panes of glass for better insulation.

It's "lintel". The horizontal span between support posts.

Lentils are tiny round beans (i.e. Lentil Soup).

Another one I've learned over the past few years: mirepoix

It's what you get when you chop onions, carrots, and celery. Ya know, the base you start for soups, stew, stock, etc. A holy trinity of good cooking, good enough for its own name. Pronounced "MEER-pwahh".

I learned that "holy trinity" thing from a friend recently.

But it's something that all cooks use regularly. I can remember chopping up onions, celery, and carrots since I was a kid. Chicken noodle soup, cacciatore, thanksgiving stuffing, beef stew: it's used in many things. I never knew it had it's own name until a few years ago. The term is used alot in Cajun recipes where it's expected you know what "mirepoix" is.

But it just feels so good. I can't help myself. Three times a day just isn't enough. Sometimes on the way to work. Always in the theater. Or, maybe just a random street corner. Can't stop thinkin about it now. Gotta go...

Tonsillolith - those whitish/yellowish foul smelling nuggets that you cough up sometimes. aka tonsil turds. If you've ever had one, you know what I'm talking about. The worst smell on earth. The human body is really disgusting when you stop and thing about it.

Those vertical spindles extending down from the railing are call balusters.

Actually, builders tend to refer to it quite a bit - as do building contractors. However, outside of that community - you're just about spot on, nobody really refers to the ol' staircase post as a newel post.

You're spot on too. The last person I heard refer to it as a "Newel", was the guy who always works on our house. I have heard some older folks in the family call it that, but I always knew it simply as a "Post" at the end of the banister.
