No. The Tea Party doesn't advocate the killing of politicians or Federal judges at all...

Ah yes. I remember the ads where Manchin said he would use "Second Amendment Remedies" to settle an election if he lost it. Or threatening to "take out," with crosshairs, members of Congress who voted for legislation he opposed.

Democrats are using this tragedy as a cudgel to beat the Republicans over the head, which I think is premature. This guy was a complete nut job and was identified as mentally unstable very early on. There's no need to jump to conclusions.

I don't know if he is a Tea Party member or not. I am condemning the use of violent rhetoric and imagery by a group that supports the GOP. You know, conservatives love to berate moderate Muslims for not condemning 9/11 (which they have, by the way). For once, I would love to see Boehner, Palin or some other fucking Republican say, "Even though it is your right, bringing guns to political rallies and using violent inferences in political speech is not helpful."

But these chickenshits won't. They are more cowardly than the people they criticize for being cowards.

Logic fail. If he's not a member of the Tea Party, then the Tea Party has nothing to apologize for, unlike say radical Muslims who are, through and though, Muslim. Listen, if it's shown that his actions were condoned, his violent rhetoric encouraged by the Tea Party, the entire Republican establishment should apologize. Until then, the Democrats should be somewhat cautious about throwing stones. The simplest and most logical hypothesis is that this guy was a schizo, not a Tea Party terrorist.

How many times have you heard GOP leaders criticize Muslims who have had nothing to do with Al Qaeda for not condemning the anti-West rhetoric of some of the Imams out there? This is no different. The GOP leadership is too chickenshit to criticize the violent rhetoric used within the Tea Party. Even worse some, like Palin, have adopted it.

I'm not saying the Republican establishment should apologize. I'm saying they need to condemn those within their own ranks, and specifically the Tea Party, for using violent rhetoric against Democrats.

Again, you're assuming that this guy was a Tea Partier or some Republican nut. As far as we know, he was a schizo with wild political beliefs. Should Republicans condemn all schizos in their own ranks? When the facts come out, then we can start calling people hypocrites based on their acts or omissions. Until then, you and the media are just jumping to conclusions and using a lone actor as a hammer against an ideology that you don't like.

Incidentally, Republicans should condemn those who use violent rhetoric in their ranks, just as Democrats should have condemned those in their ranks accusing the last admin of being perpetrators of genocide and Nazis. What we should all do before we use this tragedy as a teaching moment, is step back and determine whether there is in fact cause to condemn his actions as an outgrowth of this ideology.

I'm not accusing the guy of being a Tea Partier. I'm saying that when a nut opens up on an elected official and kills a Federal judge in a state that has been a hotbed for anti-immigration rhetoric, maybe the GOP leadership should condemn the rhetoric of a major political force that implies the need to use violence against politicians and Federal judges you don't agree with. It's never okay to murder people...or threaten to murder people...simply because you don't agree with them.

So the Republicans would be apologizing for something they're not responsible simply because it happened in a state where there are huge number of right-wing nutjobs? Should Democrats apologize for Jeffrey Dahmer because he committed his crimes in a liberal state represented by Russ Feingold? You want to use this event as a reason to finger point, but until the facts come out, you simply can't.

I doubt HIGHLY that the judge was a target. He happened to be there. Federal judges (at the district court level) are usually very low key, and to claim that there was some intent to kill the judge (who, BTW, was a Bush 1 apointee) is going to be tough to demonstrate.

The latest article on yahoo is loaded with comments about the shooter being a republican, teabagger, right-winger, etc. Even though it looks like he was a mix of nuttiness from all sides, it doesn't matter. Any time something like this happens, it means that you have to stop disagreeing with "me" and stop speaking your mind, or you are also a right wing nutcase, as "we" have already branded this guy.

It's not a simple attack of a politician by a schizo, it's an opportunity to trash anyone who isn't left wing enough, and like Rahm Emanual says, "Never let a crisis go to waste".

The immediate knee jerk reaction by the left to blame this tragedy on the "Tea Party", whatever that means, only serves to highlight their zealotry and inability to think logically.

What does the "Tea Party" have to do with a paranoid atheist who shot a conservative democrat who supported the 2nd amendment?

Why not assume he was an anti-Semite trying to rid the world of one more Jew?

Why not assume he killed because he hated female congresswomen or those who voted against Nancy Pelosi for minority leader?

Why not assume he was reacting to the vitriol from the left and its constant denigration of those who oppose this government’s agenda and expansion of power?

For those who simply must make assumptions, why not assume something more logical, like... maybe he killed because a voice in his schizophrenic brain told him to.

Or, better still, how about waiting for the facts to emerge and then, without clouding those facts with political ideology, examine them logically? Now that’s a radical idea.

So basically, your point is he can not use the excuse God told him it was ok, like so many other Mass Murderers and our politicians have said.

"Pray for our military. Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right for this country - that our leaders, our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God" Sarah Palin

'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."President George W Bush.

Sarah Palin and other Republicans have a good deal of responsibility for this kind of thing because they have chosen a political strategy based on stoking fear and anger by lying about their opponents. Charges of socialism, death panels, birth certificate nonsense, and other outright falsehoods are meant to scare people into believing that a rogue government has taken over. That some crazy person then takes the next logical step and concludes that violence is an acceptable remedy to the "tyranny" shouldn't be too surprising--we've seen it before.

People warned Palin and others about this kind of thing and they dismissed it. She supported a candidate for the senate who spoke about "Second Amendment Remedies". As usual, instead of listening to criticism and reconsidering her behavior she doubles down and intentionally tweaks her critics.

People like you don't seem to understand the difference between holding people accountable for their rhetoric and actions and holding them responsible for other people's crimes. No, Sarah Palin is responsible for what this nutcase did. But she is responsible for her own lies and overheated rhetoric. As somebody who supposedly wants to lead, she should know that she has to be a better example to her dimwitted followers.

It is hard to believe anyone would actually write that, but I guess there are some out there. I also point you to WV's Joe Manchin, a Democrat.

Please produce a single ad run by Sarah Palin that matches that one in gun-violence suggestion. And while you are at it please produce some shred of evidence he was a follower of Sarah Palin. He killed a conservative, Republican-nominated federal judge. Where in the Palin rhetoric does she suggest conservative judges should be criticized, let alone killed?

Forgive me for being "one of those people" interested in the root cause of why someone did something violent, as opposed to unevidenced knee-jerk reactionism and quick identification of easy scapegoats.

Someone who knew him described him as an ultra-liberal, left-wing pot head obsessed with 2012 end-of-world theories wrought on our world by liberal demokrat hollywood.

It is more fun though to ignore all that and jump to conclusions, just like the DC area did with the beltway sniper, that this is some republican scrawny white guy with issues. He may in fact be a demokrat scrawny white guy with issues.

Remember the sniper case, what your ignorant knee-jerk konklusions are here may not turn out to be correct.

Palin removed the bullseye graphic from her website after the shooting. Why do that? Because she knows she's wrong, but won't admit it.

Gifford's teabagger opponent held a political rally where people shot guns and talked about "targeting Gifford".

No one should be surprised that this shooting spree happened.

I noticed too all of Palin's skull shrine photos were taken down. Obama has also taken down all quotes of him referring to the "shellacking" he took in the November election from the White House press pages, lest anyone believe they think he is calling for an actual physical event.

Our society and our language contain metaphors, that is a fact of life. Should we outlaw every simile and metaphor from our English language, lest anything be taken out of context? Let's eliminate all jokes and sarcasm as well, given they are often lies when read at face value.

There are crazy people out there. Had he rammed his pickup truck through the crowd and killed twenty people that way would you be blaming Sarah Palin? Crazy people do crazy things without Sarah Palin, the history on this guy predates McCain's unleashing of that bimbo on our nation.

First of all, it doesn't matter whether he was a supporter of Palin's or not. Palin has contributed to a climate where a lot of people who are in positions of responsibility are fostering a belief that a revolution is necessary. She stoked the Bill Ayer's controversy--planting the idea that Obama is somehow associated with terrorists and radicals. She capitalized on the fear caused by the financial crisis to allow people to believe that Obama's policies were the cause of many of those problems and making them worse. She created the whole 'Death Panel' lie, etc.

As for the example of Joe Manchin: First of all, he is barely a Democrat. He ran far to the right to get elected. Secondly, this is the difference between the radical right and those on the left: clearly there are crazies on both sides. But Democrats disassociate themselves from their crazies, while Republicans elevate them to highest positions they can. Show me a Democrat clamoring to have Joe Manchin 'primary' Obama. How many Facebook fans does Bill Ayer's have? How did Cindy Sheehan do in her race against Nancy Pelosi? The right makes heros of Sarah Palin, Christine O'Donnell, and Newt Gingrich so they own their actions.

Once again, I've never heard Al Gore, Dennis Kucinich or Howard Dean advocate violence against elected officials. What exactly did Sharron Angle mean by "Second Amendment Remedies?" Why did Sarah Palin repeatedly use gun references when discussing dealing with elected officials? And why haven't Boehner or McConnell condemned this language?

Yes. A lefty who burns the American flag because the American flag isn't mentioned in the Constitution? Or that supports an anti-immigration group that is trying to drive illegals out of Arizona? Or that questions U.S. currency?

The guy is a nut who may have been a lefty four years ago. But somewhere along the way he started picking up on some pretty libertarian things. And somewhere along the way he figured out it was okay to try to blow the brains out of an elected official who he disagreed with. You don't hear too many liberals advocating that position, but you do hear it a lot from Sarah Palin and company.

I've never heard John McCain, Mitch McConnell or Eric Cantor advocate violence either.

You've got extremism on both sides. You've got ultra right groups that advocate violent downthrow of the government; you've got ultra left groups that threaten to kill and burn development, business and houses.

John McCain, Mitch McConnell and Eric Cantor have all kissed Sarah Palin's ass. I haven't heard any member of the GOP leadership come out and say, "There's not place for violent rhetoric in our political speech." They don't even have to say shit about the GOP or Tea Party. Just acknowledge that this language is unacceptable.

How many 'Tea Party' folks have put bombs in crowded places to mass kill civilians again? Other then some abortion supporter who bombed clinics or shot some doctors - which by the way, has nothing to do with the tea party - what else has the current political affiliation of tea party types done that rises to the level of Al Qaeda?

What a load of shit WTL. This guy was a whack job, and he went out and killed folks with a gun. That is the long and short of it. There was nothing about this guy that had anything to do with the tea party, or other conservatives, and the fact that the first thing out of libtards mouths is that somehow conservatives should first off be blamed for his actions, and second somehow they should be held accountable is patent BS. Every time we have seen this of late, it has been a lefty, or left-leaning loon that decided to pull the trigger, or fly their plane into a building - so maybe the leftys should apologize for being a bunch of whack-a-nuts for allowing these kind of folks flourish - that have no qualms about using guns on innocent people. Maybe they should call the DailyKOS to account for putting out a target list of Blue Dog Dems who voted against Pelosi - one of whom was this lady that got shot.

No... maybe folks should just realize, this guy was a loon, and until the full story is out, maybe the stupid inflaming rhetoric should be reigned in. MSM and the Rachel Maddow/Keith Olbermanns of the world are foaming at the mouth right now trying to lay this on everyone's doorstep except the guy that actually pulled the trigger.

Yeah, let's arrest Pelosi for calling folks protesting health care changes Nazis. If we held folks accountable for their overheated rhetoric, that would pretty much wipe out Congress, the executive branch, and most of the MSM.

It's nice that Boehner did that, even though it was after somebody got shot in the head. This is what Boehner was saying before...

Another Ohio Democrat, Steve Driehaus, clashed repeatedly with Boehner before losing his seat in the midterm elections. After Boehner suggested that by voting for Obamacare, Driehaus "may be a dead man" and "can't go home to the west side of Cincinnati" because "the Catholics will run him out of town," Driehaus began receiving death threats, and a right-wing website published directions to his house.

Funny, I don't think the tea party existed back then huh?

McVeigh had his own issues, and while he might have been in a militia, that is not the tea party. There are some militias that associate with the tea party, but they have their own reasons for that. Again, please show me an example of someone in the tea party, or otherwise that has happened after the tea party was formed who has committed an act of violence on par with the folks on the left who have gone extreme in the last 4 years.

Yeah, WTL is not big on much original thinking when it comes to politics. He is one leg short of Vince(1) in rhetoric, and seems to get most of his talking points from the same sources.

Nope. The narrative has been written. It's not my failure. It was the failure of the GOP to reign these people in and, instead, to try to exploit it. This is the Tea Party's "Jump the Shark" moment. It is an albatross around the neck of the GOP. That's why Boehner is trying to distance the party from it, but it's too late.

It's actually funny how liberals do everything they can to avoid the fact they are full of shit in their fearmongering that the right wing will be responsible for all the violence - in particular when it is consistently left wingers/leaning folks pulling the trigger or flying their planes into IRS buildings.

Just because someone was a "pot smoking lefty" four years ago doesn't mean he hasn't bought into Sarah Palin's bullshit. I mean, the guy was apparently a supporter of a white supremacist group that targeted illegal immigrants. Sounds pretty Tea Party to me.

Tea Party members don't like republicans any more than democrats. It's anti-big government, both republican and democrat. That is why neither the republicans or democrats have a high approval rating. You're ignorance continues to astound.

You convince no one with your babbling rhetoric so you must just post so others can laugh at your blatant lazy brain dumps. OK, I'm laughing at you.....now what?

You all are so stupid with your delusional rhetoric it is funny. Get back to us when you have something factual to base any assumption on that this guy was anything but a nut. Factual - not the latest hearsay.

Yeah, I'm sure it was a total coincidence that Palin removed the Giffords/bullseye graphic from her website shortly after a bullet was fired through her skull. Not damage control, not a guilty conscience. Just a sheer coincidence.

Well, it appears that the Liberal Talking Heads weren't wrong.

Spin or deny it all you want; the conservative base in this country has embraced this whole "The Constituion is all that matters" and "What would the founding fathers do" viewpoint. Whether it's painting politicians who supported the health care bill as socialists hell-bent on destroying the country, or implying that the president is doing all he can to interfere with personal liberties, or mixing politics and religion, or blaming democrats for unemployment and budget problems... do you really think some people won't take this bullshit to heart as gospel?

Even if that's not the intent, it's fucking stupid, anyway. If people like Palin would shut their stupid bitch mouths for two seconds, this guy could have been written off as a lone, delusional nutjob acting on his own volition. Unfortunately, this guy shot an elected official who had a target painted on her by Sarah "Don't Retreat, Reload" Palin, which is politically retarded. They set themselves up to take the blame for this through all the bullshit they're spewing.

Here is what Palin has on her website:

"On The Tragedy in Arizona"

My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

- Sarah Palin

HORRIBLE!!! You're a buffoon. The Daily KOS had targets on DINO districts before the elections in November. Why don't you rant about that? Oh yeah, because you're a partisan hack and part of the problem. Typical lib.

Speaking of which, why isn't Odumbo out there telling us to withhold judgment until we know the facts, you know, like he always does when a muslim attack occurs (Ft. Hood anyone)? The partisan hack in the white house trying to exploit a tragedy to shut up his opposition. Nothing lower.

The Tea Party is not made of independent thinkers like you are portraying. Many of them are not satisfied with what has become of the Republican party, but they, the Tea Party, are still ultra right wing paleoconservatives. They are fundamentalists in their "nothing matters but the Constitution" thinking, and they are reactionaries on social issues.

People can portray the Tea Party as diverse all they want, these Tea Partiers are the same people that would have protested womens' right to vote in the eary 20th, and they are the same ones that would have been against civil rights legislation.

Either way we all lose. This idiot will stem some stupid debate within our government and we will lose some freedom. Some law will be pass to make us safer but we are not safe just a false sense of security.

It is obvious that you have never attended a Tea Party rally and are buying the liberal talking points, so further discourse will not be productive.

Tea Party members don't care what the MSM says about them. Tea Party members don't care what left-wing sheeple like eesh, WTL and TheMeeper say about them. The Tea Party is here to stay. Get used to it. The numbers are against liberal theology in this country and the Tea Party makes you fools on the left have to face that. Scary for you indeed.

Do you have some proof that this guy was a Tea Party nut and not just a run of the mill schizo? He's an atheist and list the Communist Manifesto as one of his favortie books. Hardly a toe the line TPer.

How is this logically associated with the attempted assisnation on Sat?

There's a big differnce in demonizing your enemy and being responsible for a killing. May I point out that both sides engage is such activity. Should I remind you of the violent language that Obama used on the campaign trail, or the Nazi-obssessed rhetoric of the anti-war left?

> Even if that's not the intent, it's fucking

I agree. It's stupid. Both sides should stop.

If people like Palin would shut

You're engaging in guilt by virtue of disagreement. It's logically unsound and (until proven) factually untrue.

Absurd. "Set themselves up to take the blame" is the same as saying "I don't agree with your rhetoric, so you're responsible." It's wrong and stupid and you're engaging in the same type of shit you deplore.

Eh. The Tea Party isn't the only group with guns in the country. The sooner you guys kick-start the civil war, the sooner we can get back to the shit that matters.

IT WAS IN REPONSE TO THE SITUATION.
AS IN :
SHE OBVIOUSLY REALIZED HOW INSANE LIBERALS AND ANTICIPATED YOUR MOVE.
HOW SMART DOES THAT MAKE YOU LOOK, DUMBASS MEEPER?
INFACT, IT IS COMMON FOR THEM TO READ INBETWEEN THE LINES AND
LOOK FOR CONSPIRITATIVE MEANING TO EVERYTHING.
(EX. racist code words)

WELL YOU ARE TAKING THE BAIT, AND TRYING TO USE IT AS DAMAGING EVIDENCE THAT SARAH PALIN SOMEHOW SUBLIMINALLY MOTIVATED THE SHOOTER.
BECAUSE YOUR A DUMBASS.

NOT AT ALL.
BUT AFTER THIS, YOU SHOULD HAVE A GUILTY CONCIENCE FOR BEING A SIMPLE MINDED DUMBASS.

I'm not claiming to know what this guy's political affiliation was. Nor am I claiming he was a member of the Tea Party.

What I'm saying is, there's a group of American citizens who, intentionally or not, are encouraging violence against politicians they disagree with. The very public face of this group of American citizens literally put a target on this congresswoman. Whack jobs like the shooter tend to pick and choose what they believe based on what fits into their own narrative. This isn't like someone thinking "Catcher in the Rye" says they should kill the president; these are people saying that guns are necessary to make the country better, and all people like the shooter need is a target.

Maybe I'm the only who thinks the dude just wasn't that sophisticated. I think he shot her because she was his congressperson, not because of whatever political party she was with. She is a self-termed former Republican, blue dog Democrat who appeared with firearms herself. If someone wanted to target a liberal politician then she wouldn't be interesting to someone looking to do that.

But DailyKos actually did that too because they thought she was too conservative, and a progressive should have tried to unseat her. Very few are calling out DailyKos though for using words like "target" and "fight" and "attack".

Here is the whole problem with the argument that the Tea Prty movement influenced his actions - it simply isn't true. Now, I know Voter_____, TheMeeper, WTL, etc. want to blame the tea party everytime there is an act of violence, but so far they are batting a big fat .000. It appears to be the case here as well as the shooter was a liberal - just like Voter_____, TheMeeper, WTL.

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2011/01/jared_loughner_alleged_shooter.php

"A classmate of the man accused of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords this morning describes him as "left wing" and a "pot head" in a series of posts on Twitter this afternoon."

"She describes him as "quite liberal" and as a "political radical."'

Yes DailyKos, mission accomplished on your bullseye. I'm starting to think this was a sickening demokrat plot to hurt the new wave of conservatism in America. This guy was a left-wing radical who obeyed the DailyKos and shot his not-liberal-enough representative while dailyKos and others use the event to attack Palin.

I could care less if the guy is a liberal, democrat, Whig, Nazi, etc. That has nothing to do with the fact that Sarah Palin and other nationally-known political and media figures routinely use violent, anti-US government rhetoric that promotes the kind of actions we saw on Saturday. I think it's good to point the finger at them now rather than later when it is too late.
