I was going into starbucks at kamp washington this morning and some homeless dude starts begging for money, when I told him "NO" he asks to use my cell phone to call his mother.
I dont understand why these people dont get jobs, homes, cars, health insurance for themselves. Its really not that hard.
This guy pissed me off so bad that I left without my coffee, had to drive over to the one by GMU. Am I wrong in thinking that Im the victim here?

There are jobs here in fairfax county for anyone who wants to work. Just look at the county schools website, they are desperate for food service workers, HVAC technicians, groundskeepers, school custodians, sheet metal workers even one on there for a secertary. Those are jobs that ANYBODY who is not mentaly retardrd can do. People are unemployed around here because they want to be.

The phenomenon has nothing to do with selfishness but instead has its roots in mental illness, often untreated. Many of them are outpatients of mental hospitals.

There was this older guy where I grew up who became homeless about 15 yeas ago. He was always a nice dude, but he was very slow, obviously some kind of learning/mental disability. Still, he was able to work in construction, and he lived at home and took care of his elderly parents. Things went bad for him after his mom and dad died, and he wound up living on the streets of a nearby city. Last week I learned that he was found frozen to death on someone's front porch. So I'd have to say no, you're not a victim.

I'll agree on some of those jobs, but you're retarded if you think anybody that's not retarded can be a HVAC tech, especially on the big commercial equipment used in large buildings, like schools.

The County's problem is they pay about a third of what a competent commercial HVAC tech earns. That was true even before they froze wages 2 or 3 years ago.

That cracks me up ! Some of the stupidest people I know are havc guys. Those guys think they are smart but anyone that has a middle school education can pick it all up in a month or two. This is why they dont offer a hvac technician degree at any four year college.

I used to have sympathy for homeless people, even panhandlers. I thought they were victims of addictions or slow slides into bad luck. I even occasionally bought a copy of "Street Sense" which had articles explaining how these folks were just down on their luck and a step or two away from recovery.

Then one day, a homeless panhandler tried to rob me, injuring me in the process. He's in jail, and the whole experience forever changed my mind about these folks. Now I can't help but view them as potential threats unless they're old or obviously weak, and I wouldn't even begin to think of giving them cash to feed their "hunger".

i gave this guy 12 bucks.

Jeremy, You crack me up. I have been working with all kinds of HVAC guys for 27 years. You think that HVAC is "so complicated" but its nothing more than 8th grade Physics. We somtimes refer to an HVAC guy as "The peon with the freon" lol. BTW the union shops have PROVEN to be the worst in the DC area.

What is t2t?

I'm not lieing about the fake addictions. I woked with this guy who decided not to be homeless anymore. He had to get a job because his burned out bus was being towed. the job was so he could move in to a shelter. He worked for about 3 month then quit. he went back to living on the street. I also was able to get some info on him from other that knew him from AA and NA meeting that he attended. these people where unaware of his homeless status. Later I meet a good freind of his who told me that his father had left him a fortune in his will with the condition he not live on the street and get a job. He choose to live on the street. The people that I mention that where panhandling for profit where doing this in alexandria. This also know joke I had co-worker who had worked with these people they told him they quit because they made more money begging change. I don't care what you believe but most are either scammer or crazy and choose this life style. BY the way I go wilderness camping all the time living out side no problem.

Why is the word "by" emphasized in your statement about camping?

again i suggest that you try surviving on the streets for a 48 hour period and rethink things. you're out of your mind if you think that "most" "choose" this life, regardless of whether or not you've been "wilderness" camping. whatever that means.

I challenge anyone who thinks that a job or house will change the life of must homeless. They do not want to work they like the free life style. If it get to cold go to a shelter. If you cant beg enough food go to a soup kitchen. I'm not talking out my ass I have worked with these people they do not want to change. If you don't believe me try it take a homeless person a change there life get them a job or housing. You will find them back on the street.

i'm a social worker in san francisco; a city with a significantly larger homeless population than arlington, virginia, local guy.

Alot of them are lazy, but then alot of them are stuck where they are. Picture them going to apply for a job in their shabby condition. Picture them filling out a job application or any application for that matter, they don't have the facilities to apply for a Social Security card. The majority of them are mentally disturbed with no acess to care or meds.

How does being a social worker in san francisco qualify you to comment on homeless in virginia. Why are you posting on this forum?

I like going homeless with free stuff and warm up at the shelter when it get to cold and windy. local guy tried to make change for me but after I eat his lumpy mash potatoes, I went to the soup kitchen.
I hope local guy doesn’t try any more changes and Im not talking throughout my ass now, if you dont believe me, you try his mashed potatoes.
