Sick of calls from Purple Heart

These people call every few weeks. I tell them to stop calling but they still call. They even call from their own home phone. The number is on caller id. How do I stop these pests?

Just tell them the only thing you have to donate is a collection of nude self-portraits, they'll stop calling fast.

Unfortunately charities are apparently exempt from the no-call-list. I don't know how landline caller ID units work... can you set it to not ring the phone when something comes in on that number?

If you've got a spare computer lying around, and a few bucks for some parts from ebay, you could always build an Asterisk phone system, and blacklist the telemarkers. I've got mine configured so that if a telemarketer calls, I hit a few buttons on my phone, it sends them to a recorded message that says "I'm not interested in your product, please remove me from your list", then disconnects them and adds them to a blacklist, so if they call again, it doesn't even ring my phone, they just get that message, and 'click'.

I use SunRocket VOIP. When I get a call I don't want, I immediatly go to their web page, copy the phone # from the incoming or missed calls list and plug it into the blocked calls list. Next time they call, they get a busy signal.

Here's my time tested method.

Phone Rings
Me: Answers Phone
Me: “Hello?”
Telemarketer: “We’re calling for a survey company/for a charity/to sell you something/etc.”
Me: “No thanks”
Me: Hangs up phone.

Elapsed Time: 4 seconds.

If that doesn’t work, have fun with them. Sometimes my roommate breaks out with an accent or two, always accompanied with lots of “HELLO?!”, “WHAT YOU SAY?”, and “WHAT?”

The good fallback is to answer and be like, “Yeah, let me get soandso.” And then open up a soundboard from www.ebaumsworld.com.

Quick question, are charity organizations exempt from harasment charges? I mean I would figure that if you keep telling them No and don't call me anymore but they persist, that would be considered harasment.

Yes it is a charity. yes they are exempt. But I do consider this harrassment because they continue to call all the time. One time I told them yes, I have stuff for you. But I left nothing. These street dudes in a van came from PG county and had the nerve to leave a note on my door. it said "Sorry we missed you. Please call us to reschedule your donation pick up." And of course, the calls kept coming.

They call me all the time. What is the deal with old used clothing. Is there that much money in resale?

The charities get used clothes and sell them for next to nothing to Apogee Retail.

Apogee Retail operates the Unique Thrift Store chain.

Not only are they ripping off charities but they treat their employees like slaves.

They fired one person for not stapling fast enough. They tried to deny another their unemployment. They did not come to the unemployment hearing and threw a fit when the person got their unemployment. They DEMANDED that the hearing be rescheduled and were told no. They pitched a fit about that too.

And then, they get raided every now and again for bootleg merchandise.

Fun organization.

It must not be a big deal if the blog hasn't been updated in over a year and has less than ten entries.

The best thing to happen, would be for Congress, to also add an opt out on the DNC list to extend to charities, surveys, and political calls. I doubt they have the balls to do that, or anything else for that matter, but it would get rid of such annoyances at home. They always call right at dinner.

The best thing would be for some provider to implement chargebacks on phone calls. The vast majority of people don't use their phone much. It would become a revenue center for a lot of elderly people.

I am one of the operators for this organization and to be honest, people that are against this organization make me sick. Its to help DISABLED VETERANS. Like seriously? They are the whole reason you are even in this country, if you don't like it then move out of america dumbasses! You obviously don't deserve to be here. If you don't want us to call then call our office and ask NICELY to be placed on the DNC list. You get more flies with sugar than vinegar. All the people who ask me nicely to not call them, I add to the DNC list, but if your a dick to me and scream at me, I'll make sure you get a call again in the same day. You should also know that we have you name, address, and obviously phone number... so wise up and don't piss the people off that have way more info about YOU then you do about US.

Hmmm.......that sounds like a threat to me. And on the internet in the name of disabled veterans. Tsk, tsk.

Why don't you post your name and phone number so we can talk this out.

Charities (that is, where the charity themselves make the phone calls), are exempt from the do-not-call list. However, paid telemarketers for said charity are required to stop calling after you tell them to put you on the do-not-call list.

None of this matters, with the FCC and/or FTC not seeming to care too much about telemarketing abuses.

Honestly, do people not have caller I.D.?

Phone rings, look at the number. Do you recognize the number? No or aren't sure? Let it roll to voice mail.

If that's a problem for you and you simply MUST answer calls from numbers you're not familiar with then do this...Keep a whistle next to the phone. The next time you get a call from a solicitor, charity or anyone else you don't want to talk to simply blow the whistle into the phone. Wait for them to start talking again and blow the whistle again. Continue doing this until they hang up. Eventually, they'll stop calling.
