Driving Rules

Amazing I have to explain this, but here are some BASIC, simple, rudimentary rules for driving that seem to be off the radar for too many NOVA, MD, and DC folks:

1. Left lane fast, right lane slow. If you can't mentally handle driving in the fast lane, move over till the grown ups pass you - on the left.

2. TURN SIGNALS tell others where you are going. Use them when making lane changes as well as when turning. Not difficult. If you can't mentally handle using a turn signal, move over till the grown ups pass you - on the left.

3. Green means Go. When a traffic light turns green, that's the legal definition of pushing on the gas pedal. Not sitting at looking at it and being mesmerized by it. If you can't mentally handle responding in a timely manner to a green light, move over till the grown ups pass you - on the left.

Mo...I'm with you 100%. I've noticed a lot of young drivers who don't signal at all, like it's cool or something. If I'm behind them when they do it and I have to slam on my brakes, I give them the extended horm every time. Like it's so fucking hard to use your signal. Assholes.

gotta love those that use a turn signal and think that give them the right to pull into your lane regardless... especially those that do so with a solid white line.

Sorry pal, but I'm pausing a second or two to see if the motherfuckers that just got a red are going to stop.

I hope you got side airbags, dipshit.

I used to jump on the gas every time the light turned green. Then last year I got T-boned in Alexandria by some young woman from Pennsylvania. Not worth the 1 second time savings for sure.

Also by using turn signals, other drivers will purposely adjust their speed to prevent you from changing lanes.

I have seen signs in PA that say "Flash to pass", and when you would do it, drivers would move to the right lane. Drivers here don't seem to know about this form of signal communication.

+1, I remember on incident distinctly. One night traffic was unusually heavy and I was in a merge lane getting onto an interstate. There was a decent gap and I signaled, and the jerk in the back of the gap sped up to cut me off as I moved over. Turned out it was an unmarked police car and he pulled me over to lecture me. The signal-means-opportunity-to-cut-someone-off behavior is too deep in the culture of the area, even the cops do it. And I haven't had a ticket or even a warning in my adult life so no I wasn't in the wrong.

It's in the law book around here. If somebody flashes their lights, you're supposed to move right. I really wish more people would do this, rather than passing on the right. It's a pain in the ass to try and move over as somebody accelerates and passes you on the right.

This is only the case if you don't know what you're doing. I signal every lane change and this NEVER happens to me. How could that be possible, you ask? It comes down to the difference between using a turn signal to ask permission, and using it to give an FYI. If you do the former, people will close the gap before you change. And it will be well-deserved -- karma for your incompetence. However if you do the latter, all will be well.

Note that this is different from acting like your turn signal gives you the right-of-way to squeeze your way in and force someone else to brake. The FYI approach is basically the following:

1) Find a suitable gap to change into
2) Signal
3) Immediately after the signal goes on, start your change

Piece of cake. If you're running into situations where people are seeing your signal and reacting before you start the change, you're doing it wrong. And if you use this as a justification to not signal, you're an idiot.

As for flashing lights to get someone out of the left lane, get real. The majority of left lane blockers know full-well what they're doing and they're doing it to annoy you. This is how they get out some of the anger they accumulate on a daily basis -- by being passive-aggressive behind the wheel. Flashing your lights or giving them the finger just satisfies them more by showing them you're annoyed. Pass them on the right, give them a thumbs-up and a big smile, and be done with it.

If you moved out of the damn way to begin with, you wouldn't have to worry about people passing you on the right

I never use my signals, I don't want people to know what way I'm going.
