I'm forming my own VDF. It'll be composed of Blackwater dudes.

It should say, "Sorry, I can't hear your orders to not shoot civilians over the sound of my gunfire."

Maybe when you're surrounded in the middle of a roundabout by gunmen hiding behind civilians, then folks will understand.

The VDF helped us (Virginia Power) last winter during the blizzards. We were working in rural parts of Fauquier county and they showed up to remove countless tree branches and other debris that we left scattered on roadways. Their help saved us hundreds of man-hours and resulted in quicker restoration of power to storm victims. Yes they were mostly rednecks but they helped us and they did not get in the way as some volunteer groups can.

From looking around their website, it looks like he had 30 years in the guard/active duty retiring as an 0-6 prior to his apointment as a MG. (and a docotrate in plant sciences).

They pretty much are a bunch of good ole boys organized under the concept of keeping Virginia safe. They undergo a pretty physical demanding "basic training" which include small arms, hand to hand combat, and anti-terrorist tactics. From what they claim in their literature, it appears they are pretty capable in command and control procedures. They have a boot camp somewhere in Arlington, which includes a obstacle course, range, and heavy tire flipping site. At least they keep busy.

Do you have links to support this? According to their website, they are not allowed to have weapons and receive no training on firearms. Looking at their training, they do not go through a basic training like the military; they get an orientation pamphlet and have to take online FEMA courses. Woop de fucking do.

Regardless of what the butt-fucks say. This group represent a pretty stable and reliable group of Virginia's finest citizens. They have a code and creedo which includes self sacrifice in its highest concepts and a espirit de corps encompasing vaules and traditions that are trully American. I would encourage that if you believe in what America stands for you support and encourage them. I don't know if they accept donations, but it would be a nice gesture and show of support.

Please, the VDF is essentially one step away from being a domestic terrorist organization. The fact that you think you actually serve is hilarious. You should find something better to do with your time like washing your car in the rain.

First of all, I though "cops" and "police" are the same thing...anywhoo...

The only reason I would call the cops for a problem is because it's illegal to call the mafia.

I don't understand the fuss? As someone looking and considering joining the VDF i find it humorous the pictures and picking on the individuals who volunteer. Yes quite a few do not fill a uniform well, I am sure there are a few Rambo’s in the ranks but the purpose is not to become an elite strike force capable of holding off an army. It's only to assist as needed in whatever capacity the local Law enforcement or National Guard need you in. While directing traffic or helping in a search effort may not be glorious, someone will need to do it and I ‘m sure that rather than having A Guardsman or Police Officer relieved of that duty to get on to more important things is just as important. You don’t exactly have to be a trim, fit, individual to direct traffic. I take it most posting on here do not see that as a reason to volunteer but it’s great that there are some who don't mind doing it. For every fat slob pic you post of a VDF member you can bet there is a Ret Marine, Police Officer, veteran or someone who takes his health seriously. I not a fatty or a Rambo, I have a Collage degree and I make a dang good living as a Systems Admin and probably make 3 times what a police officer does "that's sad but true" But I want to help my community, state and local officials if needed without too much interference with my family. I would probably make that uniform look good, take care of it and have it actually fit me. Honestly If you were the victim of a natural disaster, flood or in need of rescue and I walked up to you, gave you a dry blanket and handed you a hot coffee, water or even a doughnut . Would you care I was a member of the Virginia Defense Force?

I would hope in a major disaster, you are providing something a little more substantial than donuts and coffee. Maybe that's your dream, endless coffee and Dunkin Donuts.

No but even if it were U of Phoenix it's probably more then you have. Also you obviously did not read the whole thread or you you would know about the mention of Donuts earlier but if that's your first impression of me from my post then I imagine you live with your mom, play Warcraft in the basement and stick suppositories up your butt cause your full of shit. My point was if that is what was asked of me I would do it. Although I do think the uniform could simply be a pair of tactical pants and a Tee. I don't see the need for old surplus BDUs.It does give the impression of a military presence and more then enough to make some think they are in a position. Perhaps a bit of PT is in order

So, you are going to put people down who volunteer their time to help there fellow citizens in times of trouble and disaster? Did any of you notice that many of these folks have actual army combat unit patches below their Virginia flags on their uniforms? This signifies that these people served their country in the federal armed forces, honorably, and yet still feel the need to give of themselves to serve their commmnunities back home. Many of them serve until their deaths.
The VDF serves in in un-armed role because that is what is mandated by the constitution of Virginia and Aticle 2 of the US constitution. They are not "gun nuts", as you would paint them. If you spent any time at all researching, you would see that the current focus and mission set of this unit is towards search and rescue after natural and man-made disasters. In addition, they provide medical services and air reconnesence to aid in search and rescue missions conducted by other state agencies.
They serve for FREE. They buy all their own equipment OUT OF POCKET. They take UNPAID time off work to train and serve. They respond on a TWO HOUR response time to ANYWHERE in the state of Virginia, leaving their families and jobs on a moment's notice. Yes, it is true that in times of EXTREME emergencies they can be armed, but that is not by their choice but rests SOLELY with the governor of Virginia. They seek only to provide aid and comfort to yourself and your family in times of crisis and train as such.
How do I know, I am one of them!
Don't care if you respect me or my fellow volunteers or not. I would still provide you with the best possible service I can under any conditions. I would give you my last drop of water and my last bite of food in times of crisis. I care not if you respect me or listen to me or are armed better and don't care to listen to me. I will not try to threaten you or tell you what to do rather I would simply ask you if you had enough water to drink, food to eat, clothes to wear or bandages to cover your wounds then provide you with what you need to aleviate your suffering and be on my way.
VDF, for those of you who care to research, is the oldest continuously serving military organization in the US, dating to before the formation of the US. By serving the people of Virginia with dignity and respect and helping those in need we do our small part to honor those who fell before us but at no time seek to be better than anyone else.
If you are that concerned that you are going to come on here and put us down, I welcome you to come to one of our drills and tell us how we could serve our community better. Offer up an idea, not a put-down.

VDF Volunteer,

Why would someone join the VDF versus the VA National Guard, where you get compensated for your time and all equipment is paid for? I've seen the pics of your organization during exercises and the description of your support services, it sounds like you would be a fifth wheel during a state emergency.

Have you ever asked yourself why Virginia doesn't include you in VDEM? That is, after all, the agency that responds to state emergencies.

Thanks for this. I didn't even know this group existed; so I googled it and found this link for them...

Virginia Defense Force (VDF)
http://www.vdf.virginia.gov/

The Virginia Defense Force (VDF) is the Commonwealth's military reserve.
The force is governed by the military laws of Virginia and managed by the Virginia Department of Military Affairs. The chain of command for the force consists of the Governor of Virginia (Commander-in-Chief), Adjutant General of Virginia, and Commanding General of the Virginia Defense Force.

The Virginia Defense Force, with a targeted membership of at least 1,200, shall be organized within and subject to the control of the Department of Military Affairs.

When called to state active duty, the mission of the Virginia Defense Force shall be to

•provide for an adequately trained organized reserve militia to assume control of Virginia National Guard facilities and to secure any federal and state property left in place in the event of the mobilization of the Virginia National Guard

•assist in the mobilization of the Virginia National Guard

•support the Virginia National Guard in providing family assistance to military dependents within the Commonwealth in the event of the mobilization of the National Guard

•provide a military force to respond to the call of the Governor in those circumstances described in § 44-75.1

The way I read "In the New's" post is that they (the VDF) do not function
as infantry but support. OTOH, if they are not "officially" issued
weapons I doubt if they would be prohibited from bringing their own
personal firearms during an emergency if they choose. Please correct me if
I'm wrong but I think Open Carry or maybe even CCW may apply.

Just to clarify a few things:

-VDF IS actually included in the VDEM structure, lookup VA ESF 17. I actually got a chuckle reading that one as I just got finished sitting in a 24 hour FEMA-sponsored course one of many which is part of the training required for VDEM activation. I can assure you, when problems arise, you will see VDF uniforms at the state EOC.

-I notice many of you get hung up on whether or not we serve in an armed role. It is important to note that the reason we are a military organization is because it was the organizational structure that has already been in place for several hundred years. With the advent of the proffesional National Guard the VDF role becomes redundent. So there are then two basic choices. One would be to disband the unit completely. The other would be to re-pupose that unit. In my way of thinking (and apparently the governor's as well) if you already have a group of people who are willing to serve and there are ALWAYS things that need to be done, especially for free in this economy, why not continue to let them serve? The fact that we continue in a military role is basically because the type of work we do compliments the type of work the NG does so by being structured in the same fashion and having a command and control set that is the same it allows seemless integration when needed and gets rid of the need for inter-agency liasons and miscommunications. We all operate the same so when it comes time to play we are all on the same team. Also, if you do some research on the VDF they are the continuum of the Colonial Militia. By continuing as an "Army" it is a way to pay respect to those who came before us and laid down their lives for the freedoms we currently enjoy (not to take anything away from those who serve in all branches now).
-Why do we buy or own equipment? This is only a half truth actually, and I apologize for the mis-information. We purchase our own personal gear, however we are provided with mission specific gear by the state as well as food, lodging at bases and transportation as needed. But as for why we would buy our own gear I guess all I can say is that what we do, helping the citizens of Virgina, is personally important to us, enough so that we will make that sacrifice, so small compared to what others have sacrificed before us.
-Why not the NG? It is true, the physical requirements are less. We will take poeple who otherwise would have been precluded from federal service because of physical requirements. It is important to note however, that we WILL NOT EVER put a person in a functional position requiring a certain physical or mental qualification that they do not posssess. Sure, we are happy you chose to volunteer, but this is still a military organization and you must prove yourself competent in your job before you will EVER be put in a real-world event requiring that skill be performed. And trust me, there are both State and Fedearal credentialing systems in place that make 100% sure of that!
And just to clarify, we are not sitting around eating donuts and drinkingn coffee waiting for some END of The World scenario that will never happen. Look at the amount of times each year that elements of the VDF are called up and deployed state-wide. We do put training to work regularly, especially in regard to communications, SAR and mass medical roles (our 3 primary roles).
And by the way, we DO get paid any time we are called to State Active Duty at normal military paygrade accoridng to rank. We volunteer our time for drills and training. Very important distinction there.

Bottom line is this: If you have a pre-determined notion of who and what we are I am never going to be able to change that. You may have feelings based on media reports of radical militias around the country that you apply to us. Again, I can't do anything about that nor do I really care that much. All I ask is that you respect people who are trying to do SOMETHING to make their communities better instead of standing around waiting for a handout or "The Goverment" to fix their lives for them.
Again, if you have abetter idea for how we could do something please, please come let us know. Call the VDF. Call your representative. It takes the whole state and beyond, with everyone doing their small part, to make things better and keep this country the greatest place on Earth to live.

This is true but pardon me for having tunnel vision.
Everyone who finishes BCT in the Army has the title
"Rifleman" if I recall correctly. This would include
cooks, bakers, and candlestick makers.

Here you go hero, from the VDF website itself.

These quotes are taken from http://www.vdf.virginia.gov/vsdftraining.html.

a. The VDF nor the VNG are first responders and will not be called
for tasks that need an immediate red lights and siren response.
b. The VDF will not be called if an emergency can be resolved with
normal community resources or with mutual aid or with state
resources. There is little chance VDF units would be activated for
ground search and rescue for a missing person, for a hazardous
materials spill or for an aircraft crash.

In small emergencies VNG will request activation of a
small number of VDF personnel to support the responding National Guard
units.

Approximately 500 members of the Virginia Defense Force conducted their annual division-level field training exercise Oct. 1-3 at Fort Pickett. The all-volunteer force trained on a number of different tasks including aerial reconnaissance operations using live video feed, communications operations with the VDF’s mobile command post systems, less-than-lethal security operations and basic entry level training for new VDF members.

I'm sure that the individuals in this picture would be really happy knowing they gave up their weekend to train so others like yourself could spend there free time putting them down for DOING THEIR BEST to serve you. I will not ask you what you did this weekend to serve your community, as you very well may be a firefighter, EMT or Police officcer (although I highly doubt it because most of them who we have worked with were thankful for our help and interested in what we do).

Sleep well, you put someone down for trying to do something good that was within their means. Sorry it wasn't up to your standards but obviously nothing will be.

Thanks for trying to be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Wow. I certainly appreciate VDF officers patience. I have been in the VDF for about three years. Our mission does continue to evolve, as does our training; as obviously some of the pictures indicate and I have seen, there are some less than professional military types. While there are wannabes in every organization, I would tell you that the majority are dedicated volunteers. So here is what we do:
We assist the National Guard during mobilization; we take over the armories to keep them secure.
We assist local Emergency Operations Centers by providing liaison between the Guard and the local EOC manager. We actually staff the EOC during an emergency.
We are also going to assist in staffing local shelters in the event of an evacuation out of the Hamtpon Roads or DC area for displaced persons.
As to the physical fitness part, yes, obviously there are a lot of our people who could benefit from dropping the tonnage, but they are representative of America.
Our training is very formal, we attend VDEM classes without pay, attend drills and exercises with no pay, we also have to meet certain standards and have attended certain classes through EMI.

I am a prior service Airborne/Ranger/Expert Infantryman. After 9/11 I asked to go back in, but was rejected, probably because of my age. I would be happy to meet up and show you my DD-214 provided you thank me for volunteering my time and effort in order to be prepared to help you in time of emergency.

The Virginia Defense force Is the Official militia of the commonwealth of Virginia. It is comprised of prior service members from all branches of the federal services and the reserve and National guard components. It is also made up of non prior service members who have a desire to serve thier state and country
but did not have the chance to do so due to medical or other reasons.

I am a Prior service member and am proud of my service in the VDF. I have been deployed numerous times in support roles along side the Virginia Army national guard during hurricanes and snow storms. The difference between those who guack and make snide remarks about the selfless volunteers in the VDF is that these true patriots are out there giving thier time, and most of the time at a financial loss to support operations to help the commonwealth. While those who have silly or uneducated comments are sit around judging people who actually are doing something to better thier community.

SO WHILE YOU SIT ON THE COUCH OR SURF THE INTERNET WHILE THE WORLD FALLS APART AROUND YOU REMEBER YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY INSTEAD OF BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION.

VDF is below CERT!

Lots of talk, even more no action.

They have wannabe MP's that are NOT sworn officers of any US LAW. Although they take an oath, the oath protects and serves the Governor. And yes, they could be armed, however, martial law would have to be declared. And even then, they would have no jurisdiction.

Its a good idea, however, with no standards, NO physical requirements... other than a beating heart, it renders the public useless. Directing traffic and looking tough is the biggest thing they do. Check em out at the next Apple Blossom or Occoquan Arts festival. Or they go steal the real glory that should be rendered only to troops serving over seas at the Rolling Thunder thing at the Pentagon.

I feel sad for them.

I remember when Gov. Kaine was sworn-in at the Old Capitol Building in Williamsburg because the State Capitol was being renovated at the time. The VDF ran the whole thing. They were all over. They do a good job of handling the official functions of the state. You will see them at major state ceremonies.

What's crazier is we still have a State School to train officers for the Virginia Military.

What 1000 people and usually only half show up?

But since they receive NO firearms training (unless they do it unofficially) in case of a terror attack....these people will not be able to do diddly squat other than basic traffic control or tagging red and yellow tags. Training with wooden riot batons is a joke

97% of the VDF is out of shape, and suffer some sort of medical issue. Now I do commend their effort in trying to serve the citizens of Virginia....perhaps they can do so in other forms.

Now there is NO basic training....just show, swear in and put on the costume. Monthly drills are very basic and less than what a CERT class teaches. Drills consist of endless DnC, teaching people on how to look bad ass, and 72 hour pack checks of misused national guard MREs.

I had joined for about a week.....and once I started getting thanks for "serving our nation over seas" by the average citizen, I felt embarrassed and decided to withdraw. I then went to the REAL ENLISTED Military.

Now do realize that many of VDF are now retired military.....that still does not count as an official 'defense force'....they are not swat, nor are they special ops, and I digress about them screening their folks. Anyone can join so they can inflate their numbers.

We did alot of stuff, alot of good for our fellow man. I'll bet you didn't do anything!!! We are and always will be the unsung heros during a disaster, the fireman, police and National guard are the attention mongers and grabbers. We are what Ernie Pyle (WW2 correspondent) describes as the "Backbone", the Dogface, the GI Joe. We seek no glory, doing good is it's just reward.

I have just read a few of the comments posted here and I must say I didn't know we had so many cowards brave enough to attack people who serve. They hide behind cool internet nicknames, safe in knowing they would never go down to a National Guard armory and say anything they've written to a VDF members face. Nor for that matter to a National Guardsmans face. Yes, I'm a VDF member, no John Smith isn't my name. I must still concern myself with the UCMJ, which is state law as well as federal. What these cowards don't get, and will never get, just like when I was on active duty in the federal forces it's not about guns, or training, or uniforms, or if you're in shape or not. It's about the oath, will you give your life to protect strangers if ordered to do so. Yes some are too fat or too old by federal standards, but they're not serving in the federal military. Can they do the job they're being asked to do, yes. Are they willing to do what is ordered to protect people, even people who make fun of them, even if it may cost them their life, yes. I looked and looked for one comment that was posted that didn't sound like someone from middle school posted it, I couldn't find one. Yes, I was upset at first, but now. Now, I just feel sorry for those who have nothing better in there lives, nothing to look forward to, but to try and show everyone how cool they are. They have all the answers because they've served in so many other groups and done so much good in the world themselves. Oh, that's right, they don't. They sit in the basement of there mom's house, in there underwear, telling everyone how they have all the answers. Makes me wonder, the VDF doesn't take persons with felonies, did someone get turned down? In closing, as I said VDF members are subject to, under state law, the UCMJ. Under International Law, VDF members are soldiers with all the rights under the law. Its only requirement, that we be in uniform of a lawful government, we are Virginia. Get out of that basement once in a while and you could learn something real. Now before I go I know some idiot out there is going to want to reply and get into a text war. Sorry, but I won't be visiting this site again. I need to continue my VDF work, church group, the volunteer rescue squad and fire company; you know, a life, get one and stop bitching about others. To my fellow VDF members and all police, fire, red cross, and military personel, thank you. And anyone wanting to join the VDF, do it. Don't let these idiot think for you. There's a lot of class work with FEMA and other state agencies, but it's not that hard. Well for most, maybe these guys couldn't pass the tests. Trust me the first time you're called to active duty and you're working side by side with a National Guardmans, no one will care what your uniform says. Besides, the MRE's aren't that bad, ha. ha.

I can tell you that with certainty.

These guys are out there buying surplus military uniforms, and showing up in places where the Guard might actually be. In the dark, would the average person notice that these guys are just playing "dress-up"?

If they were interested in become a respectable unit of their own, they would distinguish themselves as an identifiable group, instead of dressing up as wanna-be G.I.Joes.

Just watched the video that "Keepin it Real" posted...

These folks seem to be like a self-deluded "National Guard Booster Club".

Some of the things they "claim" to do are fairly scary:

Assist the mobilization of the National Guard
Provide military reserve for the Guard
Support Guard families in need
Respond to the Governors call as a military force.
Control Guard facilities in their absence

WTF is that last one again???

What exactly did your husband do during activation? What sort of assistance did the National Guard and civilian agencies need from the VDF?

And to answer your question with a question, what did you do while your husband was "honorably serving during Derecho"?

OMG, eesh---

It seems obvious to anyone reading your ramblings here that all you do is monitor this site and attack the VDF. Suggest you do something more productive in life so your mother can be happy that she gave birth to you.

You haven't answered my question... but, we all know. As vidence from the time and date of your posting, you were lurking on this site for the duration of the state of emergency that we were under.

That is complete and utter bullshit. They did not do a thing. There is only one instance where about 20 of them were activated durring that hurricane a few years back that never made landfall. They had to beg the state to help out first responders but in all reality never did a thing. Half the time they show up to stuff unanounced and stair. More or less one could compare the vdf to the boyscouts. Also, they have never secured a base or aromry durring a units deployment overseas which another poster had mentioned. All they do is traffic control durring public events and set up chairs for special events at pickett and ap hill. They should be embarrased they sport a military uniform, have ranks and call themselves citizen soilders.

Maybe but whatever he studied they didnt teach about the use of paragraphs. Saying you have a college degree these days is like twenty years ago saying you had a high school diploma. It means zilch anymore.

You should check your source before you put out information that is incorrect.

The hurricane that you referred to "a few years back" was Hurricane Irene, which was just less than year ago that the VDF was activated in anticipation of Hurricane Irene based on the forecast of Irene's path up our coast.

You should confirm your source before you run your mouth stating, "That is complete and utter bullshit. They did not do a thing." Suggest you contact The Adjuant General (GEN Daniel E. Long, Jr.) of VA and confirm that the VDF was not an active force during our state of emergency 2 weeks ago before you call me a liar.

Your mothers should be embarrassed with your false accusations and information that you, eech, etal have posted on this site, for no other purpose but to disparage the members of the VDF who place the welfare of our state before their own.

Haters will be haters...

Eesh has once again shown that his only mission in life is to put down others who have chosen to serve, especially members of the VDF, in whatever capacity they can, in times of need, by Eesh's current posting "Smile!".

What a pathetic life for poor Eesh.

VDF in action. LOL

The video shows a bunch of pretend soldiers wearing ill-fitting reflector vests doing some sort of half-assed traffic control.

I met one of their guys at a gun show. Usually see them with some kind of booth setup. They seem nice enough. Its all volunteer and they pay for their own stuff so who can fault that?
