The Virginia Defense Force looks downright elite compared to Illinois militias.

Is it a requirement that everyone be a cynical a**hole these days? I just moved to VA, 8 years regular army & 15 years government service with DOD. I am also a single dad, guardian of an autistic adult child and am 45. If I volunteer for anything it would have to be the VDF as obviously I can't just mobilize with the guard and deploy for 6 months. But the nasty string of negative comments here remind me that most of you would be better off left to fend for yourselves if disaster strikes. Maybe I won't apply and use my past skills for the state if it means being ridiculed by the back seat drivers of society!

If there's a statewide emergency in Virginia, state level police agencies and the Virginia National Guard will protect the state. What won't be doing any good is the Virginia Defense Force.

Dude, maybe he doesn't want to join the frickin guard! Maybe he wants to actually serve in the state he lives in. Maybe, while being on active service he saw the guard in Iraq and wondered how those people were allowed to be on active duty. Maybe he sees the VDF as a way to ensure someone is left in the state while the federal government uses and abuses the NG because the regulars continue to get cut. I was a regular by the way, and we used to laugh at the guard guys. Now that I am older and wiser I realize what a total dick I was. I no longer mock those who serve. You will get there too eeesh....one day. And get off the drugs before your NCOIC finds out and has you kicked out.

If you serve in the National Guard, you serve the state; your governor is your commander in chief. Yes, you can get Title 10 orders, but that's a different conversation.

This VDF sh*t has gone too far. From what I can see, they claim to be unarmed and are working for free. That is downright un-American folks! Either they are keeping their guns hidden in the truck and getting paid from a secret fund or else something is seriously wrong here. Has anyone cross-checked the rosters with possible communist agents, runaways and sex-offenders? Bet you will see matches pop up all over the place! Also, what about drug testing? Must be some drugs in use to get these folks to serve without the HUGE benefits of going federal. Volunteer state militias have no historical precedence, did not fight in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Blackhawk War, Indian Wars, Civil War, Spanish American war. George Washington, Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln were not colonial / state militia officers. Never happened, our founders wanted a large professional army garrisoned at home and overseas during peacetime....everyone knows that. Virginia is especially known for not having any state military tradition going all the way back to the French and Indian Wars.

my old neighbor when I lived in Va was one of these VDF guys. he was a real alky too. used to dress in fatigues, drink beer, and stand on his porch with a gun late at night using binoculars (this was in a cult de sac in centreville, you couldn't see shit except for houses). he ranted a lot about the VDF funding, going oathkeeper, and was in some big trouble with the local fire company for stealing. everyone around us thought he was a real asshole

I am 17 and in the VDF. This us definately just a stepping stone for me. When I finish my GED I will definately go guard so I can dump these radios and get some real trigger time! Once I have gotten my combat patch in the guard I will totally go regular army and then volunteer for Delta Force. Then I am going to come back to Virginia and use my G I Bill to study police science and go state trooper. I believe in planning these thinges out peopke!

There's this guy in my town who is VDF. He eats out of trashcans while "patroling" our town. He keeps getting in fights with the volunteer firemarshal and some guy who used to be in the sheriff's auxiliary over who will get to be mayor if the governor declares marshal law. The VDF guy sleeps in the top floor of a brick grain silo and points an old broomstick out the broken window while yelling "bang bang, I f*ckin shot you lady." I don't pay attention anymore. That's my experience with the VDF.

Hey I read that Virginia is still authorized a "Naval Militia." However they had to disband it in the late 1950's after they were found to be using a surplus Coast Guard cutter to conduct illegal whaling and collecting transit tolls in international waters.

Jesus people, these VDF guys are just waiting to bang on your door and forcibly recruit anyone over 14 years old. While they are at it, they will be "commendeering" all your bisquick, Betty crocker cake mix and any pre-mixed frosting, marshmallow toppings or hard candies. Plus your stock of RC Cola and lots of batteries. Fortunately they have no interest in your guns or your daughters (unless they want to join the VDF of course).

Can you join if you are a autistic adult child?

If so they could head up a new brigade. They could consist

The funny thing is, for all his thinly veiled contempt, eesh wouldn't last a single day with the VDF.

He'd be bent over wheezing, trying to catch his breath, the first time they were mobilized.

Admittedly, they haven't been mobilized since 1997.

But what if there was an emergency?

I sure wouldn't want eesh out there, as part of the "thin green line".

In fact, "insiders" have confirmed that in 2010 eesh applied to join the VDF. He did the physical tests and everything. A very earnest candidate, I'm told. Unfortunately for eesh, you need a little bit more than an earnest demeanor to become part of the VDF. You need things like guts, stamina, and mental toughness. Things you don't get from sitting in front of a computer screen all day, eating ice cream while posting nonsense on Fairfax Underground.

They mailed his rejection letter on December 15.

Check the date this thread was started.

Coincidence?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...........

Some of us know better.

But you knock yourself out on this thread, eesh. We appreciate your "service".

Meanwhile, my break's over. I've got to get back to actually serving the community.

Something people like eesh will never understand.

You know, I actually feel a little bit sorry for the guy.

He doesn't get it, and he never will.

No these guys are more like a boy scouts for retired military personel then anything else. I went to have a look at them a few months ago and I cant speak to highly of them. Sure most of them are nice enough people but they dont seem to capable of much real work and the gaurd seems to know it.They have alot of Veterains from the military and the police but they are just sort of milling around for the most part training for things they will never do. No way would milita be trusted with jobs like guarding a building or detaining a civilian or manning a comms station, not while the guard has people left standing.

They are a shame of a milita and an imbaresment to civilian volunteer organization.

jihadist are pretty tough, say what you want about them they go through some tough "recruit" training. I don't think the VDF Bootcamp is as demanding, lots of free pie and milkshakes.

I cared enough to post something "the Burr" because I hate to see things done if they aren't being done well. If the State gave a dam about the VDF they could make it worth something to the Guard, a proper reserve. But they don't and they lack the balls to cut the program. So it just sits their dragging useful people whose time could be better used elsewhere. Letting the less then useful ones just fuck around playing solider. They just need to shut that whole thing down. Send everyone whose ex-military to the American Legion so they can drink their beer and organize trash pick-ups or whatever without all the flunkies hanging on their heels.

Virginia should just eliminate the VDF altogether and move the funding to the Guard for training and equipment.

With all the goings on these guys must be on some kind of high alert status. They have to do something, I'm sure they don't hang around eating donuts and iced tea. They must have some function. Perhaps work in liaison with the State Police? Their equipment and accoutrements look state-of-the art, do they go to a sort of school to learn?

In theory they have a role as third string backups for the Guard and police. Like if the whole Guard was deployed out of state the VDF would take over their regular role in the state. And they do have police liaisons for some kind from what I was told. But the big thing is that that on one outside the VDF expects them to do anything, short of manning back up back up comm relays, unless the united state gets into another grudge match like the World Wars. They have no search and rescue, no trained police, Guard support or V.dot support units, and no ceremonial use either. All their training is done in house with instructors or from online FEMA courses.

They have the potential to be an indeterminate level response for the state to use, somewhere between doing nothing and declaring a state of emergence to get the Guard on the job. But when called to active duty they are payed the same as a regular Guardsmen but are only a quarter as reliable. So who would ever want to use them? You save nothing by using the VDF over the Guard, you gain nothing by use them. So if you have more Guardsmen, of which their are like 8,000, available it always make sense to get more of them.

I could go on and you know what I will, but not here. I am going to write a letter to the Virginia department of military affairs and tell them all the better ways they could use the VDF and then threaten to call the local news networks on them if they don't make some changes. So yeah I'll just do that. Maybe. If I get around to it.

Yea right! Would you trust them to quell a riot in a Maximum Security facility if the State Police need assistance? That's one of the possibilities the State Police face. Would you trust them to add a police presence if a huge riot broke out in Richmond? They have absolutely no training as a unit and would run amuck.

Easier to get a permit to carry if you belong to the VDF, I think a lot of members stock firearms just in case the shit goes down. They are a backup to many special ops units.

I was checking out VDF, having served with the CA State Military Reserve. All NG and state militias are part of the constitutionally cited "militia." When the NG was formed, states were allowed to maintain a segment of their military department which would remain under state governor control at all times. From my experience, most state guard personnel are far from "wannabes." The strong majority have active duty experience, and due to broken service or retirement, cannot serve an active duty or join the reserves/NG/AG, but want a place where they can still do what they love: serve in uniform.

The CSMR is much bigger than VDF and joined at the hip with CA Federal Guard. For instance, CSMR MPs are armed and guard NG installations. They serve side-by-side with CANG in emergency operations centers, security missions, and other missions. They wear the same uniforms, except CSMR has "California" in place of "US Army" or "US Air Force." (CSMR has AG and Army support elements.) During WWII and Korea, the CSMR was ramped up to about 12,000, but currently is at about 2000. During those conflicts they were just what the militia has been since before our nation's founding: a home guard.

CSMR had its historic ups and downs. They went to seed in the 1970's to 1990s, and were also seen as a "joke." In part this was b/c they were a political tool for politicians in and out of the military department. But the CA TAGs and governors headed them in a new direction. VDF's image problems could be fixed if a similar commitment to true missions and appearance standards were exhibited. I would start with getting rid of the outdated BDU uniforms, which --particularly with shiny, brass rank and color patches, look, well, at best, like JROTC. Weight standards should be enforced and haircut standards. Most importantly, real missions, not granted and ungranted at whim and reasonable resourcing are needed.

Trump has decided to make them his personal shotgun. He will use them for instantaneous covert ops, both domestic and foreign.

While they publicly appear to be withering away, they are in fact receiving a dramatic increase in funding and training. They will also test deploy weaponry that the regular military still has wet dreams about.

Just as an example, an entire Spetznaz unit in East Ukraine might all be found dead one morning, by which time the VDF who did the deed are already on a plane halfway back to Virginia.

Or, the entire population of an ISIS training camp in Oregon might just 'dissappear'; they have been taken, alive or dead, by the VDF. On the plane trip to Gitmo, the dead ones plus any live ones who don't appear to have any useful information are tossed out the door into rural Appalachia. The VDF jokingly refers to this as 'feeding the bears'.

Actually the real mission, their reason for being, is to help quell the inmates in case of a riot at a State prison. When there is a riot, these are the guys who crush it, the Correctional officers and staff are ordered out and these Jackbooted riot stick wearing special unit troops are called in. A beautiful sight to see them walk in cadence, a perfect column armed with 36" New York city toothpicks in their gloved hands. All you hear when the inmates see this is quiet.

Hey, Assholes, I am a PV2 in the Virginia Defense Force. I want to say that I appreciate everyone who has served our state and/or country, but when you begin to hate on an organization that helps the national guard help your lazy asses, then don't forget what we do, and when enough people like you belittle it, and they deactivate it, and something bad happens, and the National guard has a hard time communicating in and of itself, DO NOT come crying to us. Not only do we play a vital role in assisting the national guard, but we also have many men and women that could not serve in the regular military due to health or age that get a sense of pride from doing what they can. I personally know a SGT who is a Vietnam veteran, and he told me that without the VDF, he would probably be dead. So the next time you want to be a dick, think.

Actually, if you'd do a little research, you'd find that there is a long line of Militia history in Virginia, and the militia did fight in the revolution. At that time, it was known as the Virginia Regiment, as it also was in the civil war, and past iterations of the VDF were armed and guarded a lot of prime targets from the Japanese, Germans, and the Soviets, even though they were never attacked.

This thread is rather amusing, especially for how long it's remained active. The hardon some of you have for this organization makes me think some psychiatric services are in order. Seriously, that level of obsession is pretty unhealthy. Might wanna see about getting something done about that.
I've only ever seen the VDF at the Apple Blossom parade in Winchester, so I don't really know if that's an adequate baseline to judge them by. As a vet, I'm certainly not impressed by them in that regard, nor any of these other "State Defense Forces" I've run across.
All in all, I suppose I'm in a few different minds about them. On the one hand, such organizations do have a fair number of retired LEOs and military who simply wish to continue serving, and are willing to do a lot of it out of pocket. Okay, cool.
On the other... the one which really stands out in my mind is the North Carolina State Defense Militia, which has been stood down since 1996, supposedly over a workman's comp issue, but, let's be real... it doesn't take 21 damn years to get that sorted out. They had a pretty ill repute... the original commander of the NCSDM was Bo Thorpe, who ended up being forced to resign his post after a racist remark he made publicly (of course, this was also around the same time he talked about arming his 'special forces' to raid marijuana fields). The NCSDM had a bunch of run-ins with both the federal military and the National Guard - leaving armories trashed, blatantly disrespectful behavior towards actual SMs (including a militia "Major" making a big show of chewing out a real paratrooper for not saluting him), etc. They were kicked off of Fort Bragg, as the post commander had threatened to cease allowing both the NCSDM and the NC National Guard to use the facilities on post if the governor didn't reign in the NCSDM... they basically ran around making asses of themselves. Two private organizations formed in the wake of the NCSDM being stood down, both of which effectively serve as pressure groups to have the NCSDM stood back up.
The one in Alaska was suddenly disarmed for reasons not specified explicitly, but the writing's kinda on the wall there. I think it was in Tennessee where one member of theirs was arrested trying to illegally convert AR-15s to select fire rifles... doesn't really say glowing things about these organizations.
Ran across a post someone had made on a social media site which advocated standing the NCSDM back up. While I'm not necessarily against the idea of SDMs, I had to disagree with his stance regarding the NCSDM - especially with the way that organization tarnished its own reputation.
So, what ideas do I have in mind for such organizations?

1: Less chiefs, more Indians. Right now, they have the opposite problem. I mean, it seems like for everyone wearing E1 through E3 on their collars, you have 10 NCOs. And this is hardly exclusive to Virginia's SDM. While the military rank structure makes sense, they way they use it does not. What can seven senior NCOs in a 'company' of about 20 people really do?

2: Tone it down. A lot of these organizations are named as "defense forces" - let's be real - nobody's invading the USA, nor any state within it. No member of the SDF will be defending anything. Which isn't to say they can't have a purpose - certainly they can. But let's go a route which makes it clear what that is. Perhaps you'll get a better quality candidate out of doing such, as well. BDUs are good uniforms.. they're a work uniform, the temperate uniforms are lightweight and dry out quickly, and they're comparatively inexpensive. But do we really need these people running around in M81, UCP, and whatever the 'official' names for Scorpion and MultiCam are (I've been out for a while - more than long enough the predate the latest Army uniform change)? Absolutely not. A solid color - one not intended to be camouflage - would be better, especially given the piss poor associations given to militias after the 90s. LA Police Gear offers a knockoff of the 5.11 tactical pant in a number of solid colors for about $20/ea. and they're pretty hard wearing. Perhaps flat chevrons, like used on ROTC rank insignia, would be in order. And even a similar - but distinctively different - rank insignia for officers. Something designed specifically for auxiliaries (because I don't think SDFs, the CAP, or the Merchant Marine, et. al. should be running around wearing the same uniforms and rank insignia of the regular military).

3. Streamline. I read on here that the VDF is ~1000 personnel. You're not going to take a number like that and have them serve in every function imaginable. Reduce their number of functions, have them do it better. Communications and logistics support is a good way to go. Give up on titles such as "Military Police", restructure it into something you'll actually use.

4. In the case of the North Carolina State Defense Militia and other such organizations which have dragged their own reputation through the mud, give it a rest. Drop the military aspect of it altogether. Form an organization of a purely civilian nature - yeah, it'll be harder to recruit on account of not drawing in the wannabes, but if those people make it to where you can't use the organization in its stated intent and purpose, having them does you no good anyhow.

Just my $.02 worth.

I was surprised to know that state militia were still around and I'm surprised to see how many people hate it. I'm from Korea, where the is a single National government that rules all provinces instead of a Federal government that binds states together. The supreme central government of Korea does not leave any room for diversity or flexibility because a word of a dumb ass at its Congress or Presidential House overrides words of everyone else. I fell in love with this country for its Federal system that provides Freedom to choose Jurisdiction, choose Culture, choose System, and etc from 50 different states. As soon as I became eligible to become Virginian, I ditched Korean citizenship in a heartbeat. If one doesn't like what one province is doing, good luck finding another province in that "one size fits all" nation.

One lesson a person might be able to learn from history of Korea is that, in the last dynasty called Joseon (I'll call it JS), it stayed peaceful after becoming a state of Ming Empire of China (or MEC). Well, MEC took care of JS pretty well for a few hundred years. By about 600yrs later, JS didn't have any force left and Japan invaded JS while MEC was already busy defending itself from Manchurians and a few others. Korea sent SOS but Ming pretty much had planned to ditch JS to focus its force for battles against Manchurians. JS barely beat Japan only because they had JS police, and JS state militia left. However, when 200 more years passed by, Korea didn't have any of that left. Anti-weapon law had disarmed everyone in the state of JS and people's push against police brutality and towards weaponless society had disarmed all police. State militia didn't even exist. When EC of China was weakened once more, Japan came back again and they just marched through Korea to the capital of JS. JS became a state of Japanese empire overnight without a single battle.

US has been pretty blessed for the past 300 years, but who knows fine how long? I like to know that, if US ever becomes so preoccupied with something else than helping Virginia that it decides to give up on this state, like Russia sold Alaska to US or Mongolia gave up Inner Mongolia to China, VA has sufficient armed citizens, law enforcement officers and militia to not go down without a fight.

If anything, I think integrating VA defense force into some law enforcement would be better than getting rid of state militia. Probably for fighting against gangs or other criminals from foreign states or nations.

Recent movements against centralization of US, disarmament, and etc makes US and its states look more and more like Korea, a country I ditched for VA and US.

I can't speak to other groups in VDF, but the cyber shit is on point.

I guess they have toilets they need cleaned but I'm sure they have people already that could do a better job, not bitch about it, and wouldn't subject them to being serenaded with retard music.

Could you imagine if the VDF was filled with Meades?

Comedy Gold! First "Reno 911", then "Tacoma FD" now the retards of the VDT do stupid things for shits and giggles!

First. Let's address Will. Before you go slamming people Will, you might want to get past that first grade education of yours. Trying to read your babble is frustrating for anyone with a secondary school education.

Now, on to the VDF.
You want the truth about the VDF. Here it is.

Retired military that can't let go. People who never served that want to now but can't go federal. Overweight. Old.
Main function of the VDF is communications using archaic 70s Era HF radios that barely get any signal. Laptops so they can be the VDEM secretary during a call out. Traffic control. The best part. All while wearing 80s militia uniforms.
They serve no legitimate purpose compared to other state defense forces like Maryland, Tennessee, South Carolina, California or Texas. All of whose SDF actually do medical work, search and rescue. Etc.
Virginia needs to either revamp the VDF into something relevant or just retire it. This current model is a joke.
