Can a white person get a job at a Fairfax McDonalds? Has anyone tried? I'm wondering what they would do if you applied for a job. Would they hire you?
It would be kind of hard to put a non-Latino to work in the middle of a Spanish-speaking fry crew. Maybe you could work the counter, but then you wouldn't be able to yell at the folks on the grill not understanding the order. Seriously, the staff is all native Spanish speaking these days.

When I was growing up McDonald's (at the time, the fries were actually CUT at each store - that's how long ago) was pure white - all teenyboppers, of course.

Somewhat later, the workers were pretty much all black.

Now, of course, the workers are pretty much all hispanic.

"Movin' On Up!" is probably the pertinent motto.

Interestingly, the food is still fantastic and, from my side of the counter, nothing has changed significantly.

That is to say, who cares where the person who asks "Want fries with that?" comes from?

It's the fries that count.

In northern Virginia, it seems that all the Mcdonalds are run by Hispanics. If you go into DC, it's all black, or south of Fairfax, it's usually a mix of black and white.

For some reason every Subway I go into is owned, managed, and staffed by Indians or Bangladeshis.

Chick Fil A looks like it is staffed by Mormon or Jehovah Witnesses.

This is a little off topic, but I actually went into a 7-11 today and there was a white guy who spoke perfect english working at the register. Granted, he was about 19 years old, but still!!

There used to be a white kid at the 711 near me, but he wasn't exactly normal; he had all kinds of piercings and tats and his similarly-adorned friends would hang out at the store.

Its interesting to see jobs with a racial divide. When I go home to see the folks in SoCal, one of the first things I notice is that most all construction is done by caucasions or african americans. Hispanics do not do construction out there. Not sure if its a function of the economy, scarcity of jobs, or what, but that struck me immediately.

Also, if you want a real reality check on perceived race, go to an In-n-Out. Its not too much different than Chick-fil-A.

what eludes me is how positions that involve understanding and speaking english, so often go to people who speak english terribly. Youd think that perhaps someone hiring would come up with the idea to ONLY hire people that speak english fluently. no regard to race or anything but raw skill at english. Perhaps more people would go there cause its the one place where everyone speaks english and its not only easier, but maybe they'd go out of their way to eat there to reward hiring fluent english speakers. Every time I go south I revel in the fact that there is nobody that I have to ask to repeat themselves 3 times in a row for, and bite my lip out of sheer rage over THEIR impatience with ME not understanding THEIR horrible english. The reason these people dont know english for shit is cause they dont bother to do something as simple as watch TV in english instead of spanish/whatever their first language is. In Germany everyone speaks english far better than anyone here that isnt fluent. And they dont even fucking live here. Ive known people (2) that have had horrible broken english with mile thick korean/spanish accents that simply watched american movies, watched the news, and read magazines in english and within 2 years hardly even had an accent. It can be done and it is not hard.

I recently called McDonalds HR to complain about this.

My wife, who is a house mom looking for a part-time job, has worked as manager at Jack n the Box for 4 years.

She filled out an application at the Springfield McDonalds on Backlick Rd (which is quite possibly the most disgusting roach infested hovel out there) and the Hispanic franchisee just kinda a glanced at it and said "thanks" in broken English.

No Calls. I have actually been to 7 Mcdonalds since moving here - no lie, all the employees are from the same family and/or village in Guatemala. Not every white person is a college grad, and why I'm not gonna bitch over a job at Mcdonalds, this is blatant discrimination.

I for one am boycotting McDonalds until I see some pimply faced hair-dyed stoney white teenagers flippin the meat. Anyone with me?

I wish they would hire people that speak English in general. I rarely go to McD's. It takes me like a full 5 minuets to order something because they can't understand "small fries to go" I sometimes want to get the manager out and start complaining but I assume they can't speak English either. I take a few road trips to PA every year and used to stop at a McD's along the way, in some shithole known as Dillsburg, PA. I never eat at McD's but this was a convenient place to stop for a bathroom break and maybe pick up a coffee and some hashbrowns. Not a single foreigner or minority workin there, just dumb hicks and old fat women. And trust me, they're just as slow and stupid, probably worse. I don't even stop there anymore because there's usually a line of retarded hoofties stretching out the door because the place is so dysfunctional. It's a laugher if you think hiring good ol' red-blooded Americans is going to get your Big Mac to you faster. They hire unskilled people who can't really find jobs anywhere else.

Last time I was at a non-FFX McD's was out in the Shenandoah just north of Harrisonburg. There were plenty of white folks there, all white in fact, and one lady was really cute. The service was great too, and it actually felt like a sit-down restaurant.

I remember when the Reston McD's was mostly anglos, then it went straight to hispanics. I knew different managers, though, and one of the hispanic managers was great.

On a similar note, the Burger King near where I live used to have a lot of white folks, including neighbors of mine working there, but it's gone the way of everything else. The people are generally cool, though, and I befriended some of the folks there.

One curious thing too, is that even in the country down in NC I've noticed all hispanic workers at McD's, which use to be VERY rare down there. In GA I still notice mostly blacks, but in NC, at least at a few stops, it was all border crossers. However, they all spoke very good English. I think it's because they actually have to assimilate into the communities down there *Gasp*!

At any fast food resturant in Fairfax, the first thing that comes out is "You want combo" before you can even place your order.

There is a white guy working at the Kings Park McDonalds. His name is Joel and he has a radio-type voice and is sort of cute. I can't figure out why he is there, but he is. Excellent customer service, too.

I've applied at all the local fast food places here in the Hernduras area. First off, I'm a Caucasian female who is fluent in 4 languages: English, Spanish, Italian, and German. Out of 113 applications to different places in the area, I've been called for 6 interviews. The McDonalds on Elden Street told me that they wouldn't be able to hire me because my Spanish was "broken" and they may not be able to understand my accent. I was told a similar thing by Burger King and Chipotle. Being denied a job because I have "broken Spanish" when we're in America seems very unjust and I'm wondering if this could be a legal issue.

I agree. That is completely unacceptable. It should be the other way around. If those cocksuckers can't speak English, they shouldn't be offered the job. I don't care if they aren't working the window...

When I was in high school, I wanted an easy part time job. I applied online for 7-11. A few weeks later, I got a notice from them in the mail that said I wasn't "qualified" to work there. It didn't offer an explaination, but it was probably because I was too young to sell cigarettes and beer. But regardless, it's pretty bad to be told that I'm not qualified to work at a 7-11.

No. The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in hiring on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

My point is, I'm just as fluent in Spanish as English, and that it's not written anywhere that I have to speak Spanish to work there. I just don't see how it can be legal to tell me I can't work there due to that. In fact, I'd say half my interview was in Spanish because the manager couldn't understand my English.

It's just so frustrating! I feel discriminated against for being white
