I was very curious about how PWC's tough enforcement on illegals was going to pan out, particularly since the move coincided with the housing bubble. I supported the legislation but thought the timing would be bad due to crashing housing costs and any kind of signifigant flight of illegals would hurt property values and add to the surplus of foreclosed homes.

This article cites a UVA study and seems to present some very positive effects from the move. The reduction in crime is noteworthy.

Loudoun vs PWC is like Down Syndrome vs Autism; they're both retarded looking redneck counties who wish they were Fairfax ( or even really part of NOVA for that matter)!

I fully understand there is a certain dependence on illegal labor in this area and there is a huge Catch-22 in that if you legalize them, they lose their utility and their labor prices become less than a bargain.But if you let things continue as they do, there is a lot of criminal activy, zoning headaches and once livable areas tuen into public nusiances as parts in Herndon,Annandale and Falls Church.


Fairfax should make a move. What PWC does not sound a bit to me racist, unconstitutional or unreasonable. A little proactivity now will surely prevent it becoming a bigger political issue and dems and repubs both should consider that.

Prince William has it's spots, I wouldn't want to live in Irongate, Georgetown South or a lot of the Woodbridge Route 1 corridor.

Occoquan, Montclair, Lake Ridge and Gainesville are fine suburban living. If oyu can find work out there and don't have to commute- all the better.

My commute is OK. 17 miles, each way. 45 minutes. There are some days when I have to go to a different location, though. The worst part of my commute during those days is getting through Fairfax City - the circle and Rt. 50 in that area are the worst!

Also, this past summer I was in Lake Ridge and I saw multiple work trucks at houses, etc. So I really have to doubt the PWC policy has been as transformational as the county leadership claims.

The timing of the policy coincided with the economic downturn and the collapse of the housing market. I think economic factors have as much or more to do with changes in PWC than the policy they implemented.

I am not sure what to make of the crime stats either. I would have guessed that crime was going to increase with the economic slump, but it seems to have done opposite and gone down.

DC Cheif Kathy Lanier is getting a lot of praise for the reduction of murder and robbery in DC, not sure why if things are better all over.

I don't know if I would assume "multiple work trucks at houses" equates to illegals, could well be some county necks.

I'd have to say the law doesn't seem to be the disaster that people were predicting. Laws are usually little more than symbolic suggestions, people are going to do wtf they want.

About three months after the crackdown was first enacted, I was talking to two PWC detectives. I asked them how things were going since the media coverage was starting to slow and all the hoopla was dying down. At that time, they told me that in three months the robbery rate had dropped 50% and their burglaries had gone down 35%. They couldn't have been happier with how much easier their jobs had become.

A lot of immigrants (legal and non) and immigrant businesses closed up shop and left PWC. This in turn exacerbated the housing crisis in PWC and hurt it economically, regardless of what any (potentially) biased study finds. Anyone can hire a firm to conduct a study and have them tweak it so it supports their agenda. Of course The Police Executive Research Forum is going to be supportive of a pro locally enforced immigration policy.

Most of Florida is exactly like Prince William County.

Southern PWC is a total Annandale-like dump (Dumfries, Hoodbridge, Potomac Mills), but the northern/central part such as Haymarket or Gainesville is a lot nicer. And you have to exclude Manassas or Manassas Park from that assessment.

Last time I recalled, Sterling was also in Loudoun county. Am I correct in comparing parts of Sterling to ManassasHole?

Income levels? Don't mean much. Sure, Loudoun residents might have a bit more disposable income. However, it's not always what you make - it's what you do with it.

Sure, Gainesville/Haymarket is nice, and Sterling is pretty much a dump. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Gainesville/Haymarket basically look like many areas of Loudoun County. But we're talking about county vs county. By any conceivable measure, Loudoun crushes PWC. Income, quality of schools, home values. Not even close. But your commutes are just as long.

It wasn't long ago that Loudoun was still pretty rural and there was very little development. It will be interesting in 10 years once Loudoun has become just as developed as PWC and FFX to see how the quality of life, schools, etc compares.

More disposable income = wives who work a lot less and have more time for spa treatments, while their husbands work 12-13 hour days. Meanwhile, the ladies tend to get bored. Therfore, logically speaking, there are more MILFs in Loudoun County who are lonely and looking. Yup, Loudoun gets my vote.
