Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
When I am asked if I want to run a tab I say 'sure'. Then if the bartender tells me he needs a credit card I just give him a look and tell him I'll just pay cash then. My feeling is, if you don't trust me enough to extend me credit for a few beers then I don't trust you with my credit card. I got burned years ago where a less than reputable charged me hundreds of dollars for things I didn't order so on principle I generally won't give them my card.

When I was at a concert this summer at the State Theater, they pulled that crap on me. Took my credit card to "hold" my tab - even though I paid cash. The dweeb that was my waiter couldn't find my card at the end of the night and basically tried calling me a liar when I claimed that he didn't return it to me as he tried to claim. The end result? After of 15 minutes of looking and scrambling, my card was located and returned to me.
I once went out with coworkers after work to celebrate someone's last day and I gave my card to hold the tab for our party to be nice. They charged me the tab even though we paid cash at the end. It took me a week of bothering them on the phone to get them to refund it. They said it was policy or something with parties of a certain size to make sure the card can cover it or something else that makes no sense.

I had bad experience with bill padding so I just pass and say I'll pay cash.
Seems like advantage to bar running tab yet the average bartender/dress makes it sound like a big deal

I'd like to attend one of those happy hour parties. Heck, with our company, our manager can buy the appetizers, but not the booze. The beer and wine is on our own dime.
