Seem like a lot of extra work than just memorizing some multiplication tables.

That's sort of interesting but seems really impractical. Isn't it just easier to stack the two multiplicands vertically and do the simple math from there. i.e.:

123
x 321
--------

It seems much, much quicker.

That's the "new math" they are using these days.
