TMI
Date: December 13, 2010 10:50AM

So my wife looked up an old high school friend on Facebook the other day. The woman's wall was covered with her bitches and laments about her life. She had it on the open setting for all the world to see.

Why the fuck would someone lay their personal lives out like that for any random person to see? What they hell happened to talking to a friend, spouse, clergy, therapist, etc? What the fuck is wrong with people?

The old friend is probably an egotist, so she feels as though everyone wants to know all about her. She is the sun in a galaxy of little insignificant people-planets. I hope she does not have kids, for their sake.

Alot of people are that way these days. At first, I thought it was a generational thing but I doubt that now. Perhaps it is an American thing, I dont know...

I do not understand the attraction of Facebook. I don't have a Facebook account nor is it likely I ever will.

However...

My brother "friends" practically everyone he comes across (he has more than a thousand "friends" and seems to how many of the "friends" he has are "friends" to his "friends" is significant) while his wife friends only...you know...her actual in-the-flesh friends.

Well, at least the person your wife was looking up was a she instead of a he. Or at least, that's her cover story.

I have a facebook friend that bitches about his job and lack of a relationship constantly. I just block his ass. I'm really starting to hate that site/forum/network.

In her defense, she probably doesn't understand or know about the security settings and doesn't realize it's out there for the world to see.

I recently got rid of my account. I tried deactivating it but that did not do the trick, all of my information was saved. So I did the unthinkable...I posted a very raunchy porn picture and had one of my brothers report it. The account was terminated in about 4 hours.

Until a potential employer does an internet search for him/her and finds a cached page or two.

I considered that but I have searched my name and no FB stuff comes up. The picture was of a woman sticking a hot pepper into her vagina. Since I dont have a vagina or a love for spicy foods, I can totally deny to any future employers that that was me.

Most people do not know about privacy settings. This comes in handy when you want to get revenge on or feel like black-mailing a moron whom has the same settings.

I must say, I am much happier to not have the account. It was an unnecessary pressure for me, and I did kind of feel as though I was back in high school again. The dynamics had not changed in over 15 years - the jocks were still all friends with one another, the "popular" kids send friend requests out to everyone to jack up their friend numbers, etc. Even more disconcerting was the reality that even though there were some people that I was happy to reconnect with, it did not guarantee that the friendship would be rekindled. In many of those cases, there was some initial catching up but then we reduced one another to nothing more than a little name and icon photo in a sea of virtual madness. I dont have time to keep with my own extended family across the country, let alone a couple of hundred people that I have not seen since my high school graduation. And if I wanted to keep in touch with them, I would have...with or without FB.

No, it's not an American thing. Facebook is all over Europe, Australia, and South America. Hopefully it's just a generational thing, I hope people will wake up one day and realize that no one gives a shit about your latest Tweet or opinion on your blog.

I agree w you Eesh - tis a worldwide phenomena - I simply don't have the time to devote to it and as Wahhh wrote - if I want to get in touch with you, I will. Mind you my mum/dad is on the thing and she is barely competent w all things computer.

I have less than 50 friends on my account and for the most part they are all actually old friends. Mostly college, some high school, some from my hockey/football days, some old co-workers (friended after they left). I have a few personal rules to facebook and one of them is "would I actually try and meet up with this person socially again if it was feasible"? If not, then I don't accept their friend request. Does that make me a dick or a snob? Possibly, but at least I don't have a bunch of empty names/icons that have no meaning.

I find facebook useful to keep in touch with people who I was once close to but now live hundreds and in some cases thousands of miles away. People I would probably be thinking "I wonder what happened to....?" But that doesn't mean I want to read every random thought they have!
