Anyone Else Running Ubuntu?
Posted by: Computer Geek ()

Greetings fellow computer users. Is there anyone else out there in the FFU community running Ubuntu as their operating system? So far, I'm loving it - along with the open-source community. There's a load of applications and utilities available that are simply amazing.

For a while, I was considering getting a second system - possibly, an iMac to use at home along with my Windows 7 machine. However, a few weeks back, I updated the memory on my trusty 8 y.o. laptop that's been in the closet for the past 4 years and installed Ubuntu on it. For being that age, the computer flies and is providing me with everything I basically need. Now, I'm thinking the iMac idea isn't so smart of a consideration. If anything, I could build a killer Ubuntu system for about half the price of a $1,600 iMac (with a 27" monitor).

Enjoy!

I use Xubuntu 8.04 on our secondary machine with much of the default processes disabled (for example, no power-saving stuff because the old machine on which it is running doesn't DO power-saving stuff). The installation is adequate for surfing to low-impact sites - flash is pretty much out - so I have an ad blocker installed on Firefox to stop most ads (like, for example, on Engadget - a high-impact site only because of the ads - get rid of them and it's actually visitable).

600MHz Pentium III with lots of disk and memory and an okay graphics card.

The machine is VERY usable for (C) development and HTML testing et al.

-------

I use the older version of Xubuntu since the more recent versions caused total lockups (as discussed on multiple forums) - the older version works fine - the more recent versions are apparently mostly tweaks of power-stuff, graphics, networking.

Got into linux a while back and I love it. Right now I have an old computer running Fedora as a game server (I plan on changing it to Ubuntu), a laptop with dual boot Ubuntu and win7 and my main machine with Windows and a VM of Ubuntu. Reason I have that is because I play a lot of video games which I unfortunately can't do in linux (shut up about open-source games) so I have a second monitor that I can pull up Ubuntu in if I need it or just SSH into the Fedora box.

I'm actually studying for the LPIC right now. I wouldn't pay for it but someone else is so I'm set.

Extra certifications are a good idea, especially if one's educational/vocational background isn't computer-oriented.

As noted in my temp ID up there, I've been "doing unix" for a long time, however - like since the mid-70s (version 7 on a PDP11). Plus I have a degree or two in computer science (pat pat pat).

So I rely on education and experience to get me in the door and haven't bothered with certifications.

Amen, to that. There's plenty of people out there who want to work in I.T. - yet, are still quite "green" in their knowledge areas. Sure, people can write code, yet it's another skill to be able to properly speak with a client / customer / stakeholder to gather their requirements for what they really need.

With that being said, I'm hoping I get an interview on an upcoming position that's opening up where I've been consulting for 2.5 years. It's in the area of project management / system design. It's either getting that position or moving onto another project leading 4 help desk agents - and fostering their careers along with being the lead business analyst. Option #2 isn't so bad, but it doesn't give me any additional money ... for now. However, making the leap to option #1 would be my dream.

Yup - I have an old Redhat install on a humongous Pentium tower - that machine was set up to do C development/playing quite some time ago, then migrated it to simple cablemodem interface. Now idle.

And "downstairs" (with the CP/M machine) is a box full of SCO Unix disks (5.25") - the original Unix I installed on a home machine (a Gateway '386!).

Fun stuff.

I use openSUSE and don't throw it on crappy old machines expecting good things, I run it by default as soon as I get a new computer. I keep them as dual-boot machines with whatever flavor of Windows came shipped but run XP in VirtualBox so I rarely have to boot into Windows.

Thanks for that - I needed the laugh. On the other hand, I don't see any issue with running a better operating system (Linux) for free and saving $70 - hundreds of dollars over running a Microsoft operating system and applications.
