Things you used to do to improvise and get by

Lets hear your stories of what you used to do to get by when you were younger and poorer...

Steal newspaper circulars from neighbors for coupons?

Go to free happy hours?

Crash holiday parties?

Back in the day, I would eat my grandmothers cat food. I only stopped when I realized she did not have any cats. Boy did I feel guilty...she was so skinny during her final few years...

When I was a kid, I convinced another kid to shoplift a half-gallon of ice cream from a grocery store. When he showed up with it, I yelled at him, "How am I supposed to eat this without cones or a scoop?"

He went back to the store to get cones and a scope and was busted on the way out of the store.

I went in my house and found a spoon and bowl to eat the ice cream.

Funny thing is, the kid never ratted me out.

lol, pulled this one many times when I was just over 21...

At a bar, me and my one friend would target people with pitchers of beer. We'd stand near them and start a phony argument, usually about sports, TV, or something generic- like "Who did Joe Montana play for when he retired?". We'd purposely argue to get our mark's attention, and then try to involve him or her in the debate. I might turn and say to the mark "Can you believe this idiot?? He's trying to say Montana played for the Skins!", anything to get the person directly engaged in our heated little debate. Once we felt they were distracted enough, we'd sneak ourselves beer from their pitcher. Then we'd end the debate with something like "See, I told you you were wrong, dummy!". For the mark it was a random, amusing encounter; for us, free beer!! Then we'd move on to our next victim.

We did this all day once at the Rally in The Alley, we must have drank 12-15 beers each for free.

Why didn't you just ask them for a pour?

I was the ever, aggressive coupon shopper. Whatever eaten in the home that week was whatever was on sale that week at Safeway or Giant or Vons or Ralphs - depending on where I was based.

Even though I had a housing allowance, etc., it never seemed like it was enough. There were times though I'd go to the market and buy about $100 in groceries for about $20.

One of the most common ones had to be beating a cover charge at a bar by having the first person get the stamp, come out to the car and then either draw the stamp or lick the stamp to transfer it to everyone else. The other thing we did is we would buy cheap rum or vodka and finish it off in the parking lot before going into the bar. Less marked-up booze to buy.

Walk into a grocery store and use those reusable grocery bags. Don't look suspicious and shop for at least 30-40 minutes. Then, walk out of the store with several bags of groceries that you didn't pay for. Works best on Fridays and Saturdays during the busy hours when employees are too busy to care.

When I was in my early 20s, I had a friend who was especially adept at getting things for free from restaurants. She was constantly getting free meals by berating wait staff for something having a hair in it or being too cold or not coming soon enough (which was never really the case). You would be surprised how much some restaurants will bend over just to get one person to shut up.

Cracker Barrel food sucks, but it's a perfect candidate for a dine and dash since you have to go through the gift store section to get to the cash register where you pay for your meal.

When I was a kid, you could dumpster dive at grocery stores and find things that were only a day or two out of date. I don't think that's possible nowadays between dumpsters being locked and the food companies controlling how their product is disposed of.

High school- Garage hopping. It's astounding at how many people forget to lock their side door to the garage.

College- simply walk into parties. Bring your own solo cup and meander around the wasted to find the keg. I was stopped maybe 2 times doing this in college by random kids I didn't know. They would usually just ask for a few bucks.

Throw a party- It will pay huge dividends.Delegate some of the booze supplying so it doesn't cost too much. You'll get plenty of invites to other parties down the road. And you most likely will not have to pay for a solo cup.

Clubs- Go to club meetings at the the start of the semester. Free pizza. Hot girls, too.

Real world- Have an awesome boss. Someone who is older that is flattered/excited to go out and snag a few drinks with you and some other co workers. He ALWAYS picks up the tab. He's a cool dude too.

We had a friend that worked at the local grocery store. About 3 times a semester we'd get a shitload of food and a bunch of those Kool Aid packets that cost about $.50 each. We'd then scatter the packets with the food on the register belt and our buddy would grab the food item and the packet and just scan the packet. One thanksgiving we fed about 8 of us witha full on dinner - turkey, stuffing, everything for about $14

I still buy a ton of those. But i just shake a tiny tiny bit

of the seasoning packet into the noodles.

Way too much sodium

Cheap college food deserves a thread of it's own. I can't count how many times me and my roommates would eat entire bags of tater tots for dinner before hitting the bars.

My favorite. I'd cook spaghetti, then eat it with margarine, salt, and pepper. Sometimes I'd have the leftover red pepper and parmesan packs from Dominos to sprinkle on it. That kinda stuff fed me for years. And it's actually not that bad.

+1. Sooo much spaghetti in college. I never got bored of it either. Always meatless because I was broke. I actually jacked a huge red pepper flake jar from home and put it on everything at school.

When I was in college, the local Dominos had a $3.99 takeout special for a medium, two topping pizza. The coupon that came with it had NO expiration date. I got a stack of them, and photocopied about 100 more.

The manager hated me, but realized that I intended to use every single one of them over the course of four years.

It probably cost him a total of 50 or so cents to make that pizza, so he still made a profit off of it!

I did the same thing, but with garlic salt and margarine.

As for college food, besides standards, like Ramen, I would buy the big-ass box of generic corn flakes and eat it for dinner. I also used to buy eggs and frozen french fries and eat that shit fried up together with some American cheese. It was cheap ass protein and at the time I was 20 lbs underweight, so it didn't matter that it was full of fat.

i remember the poor and hungry college days.
when things got really bad i would find a discarded receipt in the grocery's lot, find an item on the receipt and bring it into the store manager explaining that the item didn't make it into my bags.

not once was i questioned but many times i went to bed with a full belly.

About once every 2 weeks, I'll stop by the Bombay Cafe in western Fairfax City for their $5.00 buffet. I'll have 2 plates of food - one for my "late" lunch @ 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. and another for my "dinner". Doing this, allows me to not have to eat dinner at home that evening and I essentially only paid for one meal - in which I would have spent at least $5.00 going anywhere else.

I used to crash new years eve parties...they would be these fancy does. All the men in tuxes. But they wore these wrist bands that were coloured. So I'd see what the color was (this was back in the early 90's) take the strips off the dot matrix printer paper, color it in the same color and paste it around my wrist. Had a whole group of friends that did this. So we'd crash these really magnificent parties that cost ~£500 a head (i.e. $750 ea).

Drink and eat til our hearts content, hook up with these unhappy married women, toast in the new year and bugger off the next morning. Was a great time...I suppose this isn't so much getting by, but it was fun!

That's a really nice story, Brit.

That reminds me of the times my friends and I would hire a limo, cruise around Manhattan, stopping at numerous hot spots.... sit down with people, order drinks and then take off..... on to the next spot.

My fam used to have connections with a lot of different people, and they could find different deals on a variety of things, but I've established my own system over the years.

For flying, I can use my friends and family who work the airlines.

For the gym, I had friends who hooked me up with most things for free.

I knew a bouncer at a local club, and I could get all drinks on the house.

Had some friends who worked at Starbucks, and if I chilled with them until closing, they'd give me bags full of leftover pastries, fresh bagged coffee, etc. I still get free upsized drinks whenever the two people who I currently know are working.

I have a lot of other hook-ups as well, but the list will just drag on.

Dude... put ramen in a bowl...
pour seasoning packet on top of the noodles...
apply Tabasco to surface of noodles....
put some water in the bowl (if you're a pro you pour the water through the seasoned parts of the noodles)...
**optional step: if you're feeling frisky, throw a slice of cheese (I like swiss) on top of the noodles**...
microwave that shit for 2 minutes...
take it out and stir it around for a minute or so, blowing all the while...

Eat your dish.. it's delicious and took less time to make than it takes chuckhoffmann to wipe the gravy off his hairy asshole...

What a pussy...

Re: college food

I always kept a stash of those Lipton pasta dishes hidden away (food theft was a common occurrence at school).

Man, I used to think this stuff was great. They made about a dozen flavors; chicken, garlic, alfredo, Parmesan, etc. All you needed was water, butter, and sometimes milk. This was like fancy 4 star dining.

I actually bought one a few years ago, for old times sake. Yuk. They're really salty and taste majorly artificial. I think the only people who buy this crap are poor college kids.

For a while, I used to sell airline coupons on Ebay. Northwest airlines used to have these zone fares (from east coast to mid west was X, east coast to south was Y, west coast to midwest was X, etc.). They came in the Valpak mailer that you got each month.

Most folks considered Valpak to be junk so they just saw the mailer and round filed them. I'd dig them out of the recycling bin and pull the airline coupon.

On Ebay, you could get anywhere from $10.00 to $50.00 a coupon. One year, I pulled close to $5,000 selling them. Ebay changed their policies and considered them plane tickets (which they aren't) and forbade you to sell more than one a month. I simply registered 10 different seller IDs. It hurt business to say the least, but I could still sell about 100 a year then.

I had two friends that worked at a large home goods type store in FFX years ago, they would call me on Sunday's when it was just the two of them working and I would drive up to the store and park around back. The one guy would come out back with a couple boxes of plates, glasses, or silverware and put them in my trunk. I would then drive around to the front of the store and return the items to our other friend who would give me a cash refund. Around 4pm they would get off work and we would all meet up at a bar and blow the money from the returned merchandise.

We also used to sneak into the commissary at Ft. Belvoir to buy food because it was so much cheaper. They used to only check ID on the way in so we would wait outside until we saw a middle aged woman headed towards the door and then we would fall in behind her and when they checked her ID they just assumed we were her kids and they would not ask us for ID.
