With all the fervor against him in the United States right now, he's the equivalent of Saddam Hussein," Cory Scott, operations manager for the website, told the Toronto Sun, referring to the former Iraqi dictator who was executed in 2006.

"It seems to us a magazine like Time isn't radical enough to choose him."

That's a little extreme. Making a guy who leaked some embarrassing diplomatic stuff (nothing strategic) equivalent to a heartless dictator? The US government is just pissed that they have egg on their face. The government doesn't mind knowing everything you do, but don't you dare shine a light on their hypocrisy.

I think the real threat of WikiLeaks isn't so much what it has done to date, but what it represents. The fact is there is no ability to censor the Internet...even out of National Security concerns.

As for what WikiLeaks has distributed, it's been mostly embarrassing diplomatic cables that only say what everyone has been thinking.

Russia is a dictatorship
Saudi Arabia funds Al Qaeda
China wants to take the U.S. down

I guess the most disconcerting disclosure has been the locations that are essential to national security. I'm sure there are a lot of things on that list Al Qaeda hadn't even thought about...and they are in Third World countries that Al Qaeda can easily access.

Which is the best thing about the internet...for now. Rest assured the powers that be are trying like hell to get control of the net, just like newspapers and braodcasting. Should be interesting to see what they get for the tax money they will blow on it.

Wikileaks also shows how a completely uncensored Internet can be a bad thing, though. However, look at how stupid the government is about shutting down sites! Like WTL said before, it's amazing how quickly they take down file sharing sites, but Wikileaks still propagates.
