Most of the members have to be well known. However, their musicianship should be suspect, leading to "Worst"

Not fan of Damn Yankees, Bad English, Asia, Velvet Revolver or Audioslave..

SUpregroup has always sounded like some premeditated shit to me, though I think I let some of the old ones sneak up on me.

It seems like Super Groups pretty much sucked after Led Zeppelin.

I think if you have the name "Roxy," it is required that you are either from Detroit or Brooklyn.

OK Blind Faith was good and beat the shit out of most Winwood or Clapton solo.

ANd the Firm had a few good tunes (studio version unavailable but a lot cleaner, great bass riffs)

Would Power Station from the 80's qualify as a supergroup? They had some dudes from Duran Duran and then Robert Palmer as the vocalist.

Another really awful one: The Firm

It was the lead singer from Bad Company, some guys from 70s arena rock bands, and JIMMY MOTHERFUCKIN PAGE.

And they're big hit was "I'm Radioactive".

How about we just cut right to it. The worst Supergroup was VH1's Supergroup with Sebastian Bach, Evan Seinfeld, Jason Bonham and Ted Nugent.

I think Emerson Lake and Palmer were considered a supergroup. Jimi Hendrix was supposed to be the guitarist and the band was to be called HELP, but that never gelled.

I went through a phase of listening to the Brit progressive rock of the 70's a few months ago- ELP, UK, Gentle Giant, Gong, Yes etc. It's a really weird genre, I never liked it growing up, but I can appreciate the musicianship and the lengthy songs are cool to veg on when I'm doing computer work.

I think that's pretty much true for most "Super Groups." You have a bunch of egos and nobody wants to be an asshole and get the other guys to do what is necessary to make something great, so they all opt for mediocrity.

I think that's what happened with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Back in the 80s, Spielberg, Ford and Lucas could tell each other something was fucking idiotic. But now these guys are so used to hearing "Yes" all of the time, that there was no real creative friction involved in making that piece of shit.

I agree that the Firm should've been better, but there was a song on their second and final album called "Live in Peace" that was pretty good, because it was dark and had a good Jimmy Page solo.

Confession: I have that album on vinyl, bought it when it first came out and I heard that song on the radio.

I'm not arguing with you, that was pretty lame. Problem was in those days if you were a Zep fan that was all you got.

Well, that and Plant's Honeydrippers, which is so painful to remember.

John Paul Jones has some decent solo stuff since then, the guy was the best musician in Zeppelin as it turns out, but he hasn't approached the awesomeness of the music he wrote with Zep.

Fuck, I barely forgave Zep for In thru the Out Door. The Firm was kind of halfassed but light years compared to that shit. Or Plants solo-

"I'm in the mood for a melody, I'm in the mood for a melody,I'm in the mood'

As for JPJ, I regret not catching him at Jaxx in a big way.

Hey, I like In Through The Out Door. There are some stupid songs, but stuff like "In The Evening", "Southbound Suarez", and "Carouselambra" really make up for it.

That being said, I didn't listen to Zep when The Firm was out, and I might not have known who Jimmy Page was at the time. But in hindsight, it just seems really lame that Jimmy Page wasn't involved in a project that showcased his superior rock and roll skills. It's his professional jump-the-shark moment.

And BTW, I think I still own all of Plant's solo albums (the 80s stuff) on cassette somewhere. Tie Dye On The Highway!!

No, I [normally] don't go out to see the older bands when they're on their retirement-circuit tour.

I actually saw the Black Crowes at the the old 9:30 Club back in 94 when I first moved here. They played a surprise unannounced show in front of like 400 people, it was really awesome. They were at the height of their career and I got to see them up close at the 9:30, I have no need to see them again.

Nah, it was Zep and Stones tribute bands at the State Friday. Sounded pretty cheesey but my girl wanted to go, I figured it'd be laugh worthy if nothing else.

The Stones band looked like some deformed doppelgangers but the Zep tribute band was eerie they copied the sound and stylings so well.I was too young to ever see Zep live, I was ready to go camp out for tickets as they were just about to tour when Bonham dies, and I've seen about everything they are in on video. It was a cheap night and they actually filled the place.

I never understood tribute bands. If you're talented enough to play an instrument like Jimmy Page or Geddy Lee, why aren't you doing your own thing?

Ditto for people who actually want to go see a tribute band. I can't imagine paying for tickets, standing around in there and saying, "Hey, what a great fake Rush band this is."

Not that I have a problem with covers, lots of bands have to make a living doing that stuff but at least they don't go the extra step of acting like Elvis impersonators.

I hate cover bands and think "tribute" bands are really dumb too. The only one I ever saw that I liked was some AC/DC tribute band I saw in Annapolis about 15 years ago. They looked, sounded, and acted just like AC/DC, it was funny. But I agree, if you're talented and put that much effort into a performance, why not write your own material?

Souther Hillman and Furay

d8mn I'm old

Isn't a kid from Hanson in sort of an old style supergroup with the guitarist from Cheap Trick these days
these cross pollination things seem fairly common these days but don't create much traction

I think the State theatre relies too much on them tribute bands. a heavy metal bee gees tribute band yuck

Although I will concede that The Firms first album (with radioactive) was awful, their 2nd album "Mean Business" was very good and as a result, got no airplay.
I actually went to see one of their shows and it was not bad. It was strange to see Jimmy Page playing a Strat throughout the whole show, but he got some great tones from it.

It's a completely different talent to write good material vs. playing someone else's well. The first is is a relatively rare thing.

Sure, it's challenging, but if you want to get anywhere and be happy in life you have to push yourself.

There's a guy on youtube who covers Niel Peart on drums in a Rush tribute band. Somebody asked him about it and he said he doesn't think of himself as a professional musician and can't keep up with the real thing. But he has no problem keeping up with Peart. I think maybe he needs to give himself a little credit and step out a little.
