Michael Wilbon retires, miss him or no?

This is the first column I ever dreaded writing, the only time I can recall experiencing that thing known as writer's block. It's my last column for The Washington Post, 20-some years after my first one and 311/2 years after I walked in the door as a summer intern. It's not Shirley Povich's 75 years but I hung around long enough to think it might last forever.

I like him with Kornheiser, but the guys is a dickwad.

He's jumped on the race bandwagon frequently with the exception of the pile of shit he fell in after Sean Taylor was shot and he alluded to the possiblity it was Taylors own fault.

He won't be missed.

I don't read his column and I see him on TV all of the time. I'm assuming nothing will really change from my perspective.

I saw the article, but didn't read it. That should tell you how I feel.

I have no problem with him. I just don't read his column. I'm not a big sports column guy.

I like Wilbon too. Even though he graduated from 'Cuse.

I'm not either, but sometimes his headlines would catch my eye, or I'd seek out his column when a big local sports story happened. He was the best writer on the WaPo sports staff, IMO. I also like his interaction with Riggins and Jurgenson on the local Skins show

I thought Wilbon was great. He had his clunkers, sure, but most of the time he did real journalism, and he gave a shit about what he wrote.

Boswell is by far the best sports writer at WAPO, though. Not even close.

Wilbon selling his soul to ESPN--not a big fan. ESPN is the Access Hollywood of sports.

+1.

Wilbon was a good read though some of his racist rants could be a little hard to take. But there were times when he made you think a little. He got a little too Chicago-centric in has later years -- and he went to Northwestern btw.

The sad thing is not so much that Wilbon's leaving the Post but what his departure for ESPN says about the state of print journalism in general these days. WAPO is a shadow of the paper it was even just five years ago.

Growing up in Vienna in the '60s, I started to bug my dad about whether the Nats had won when I got really interested in baseball, somewhere about 3rd grade. He got tired of the pestering and began throwing the sports pages at me -- we got both the Post and the Evening Star delivered daily back then. Well, it wasn't too long before I was hooked and I quickly became a big fan of Shirley Povich.

Can you imagine him leaving the Post for ESPN? No way, the Post was too prestigious back then. But now, it's just a failing rag that is slowly but surely spiraling toward an electronic-only future. Hell, the print version is even now practically an afterthought.

And on a side note, Kornheiser blows and always has.

The Washington Post has degenerated into a pile of shit imo not because I'm a knee jerking teabagger but because of the shitty leadership of Weymouth. An Ivy league education does not translate into someone who can run a top flight newspaper. sports pages have been gutted of talent
