I have to self report to a Federal Prison camp on Jan 21, 2011 for 2.5 yr sentence. I've only been on county lock up and never stayed more than 1 day. I talked to an uncle out west who did time in U.S penitentiary and he suggests i buy protection from veteran inmates. My family would have no problem putting money in my account for that reason, but I am worried about sexual favors and stuff like that. If anyone has done federal time and has tips to share pls advice. Thanks.

I know nothing about jail but I agree with Wingnut - if you show feminine tendencies or act afraid then you will be exploited. You don't necessarily need to be the strongest man there, but don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. People will likely leave you alone if you don't roll over at the first inkling of trouble. Tis the same in real life - just more so in jail I'd suppose.

There's not a lot of advice I can offer you at this point. However, probably the most important thing to remember would be to sleep on your back.

what to expect varies greatly based multiple factors.

1) what prison are you going to?
2) was your crime violent or non-violent? if you can specify what you were convicted of, it will help.

not all prisons are equal.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think the more common sentiment here isn't that we are inclined to want to crush this dude's testicles. We just think anyone who is stupid enough to get himself into this predicament deserves whatever he is going to get.

forget about everything these chumps said in here. What ever you did, they are talking about shit they see on TV and for SURE they dont have the ball to do what ever you did. They obviously have no clue. It's called camp for a reason. I know, been there, done that. When I was there, I met a guy from out east, I THINK he said Allenwood? Anyhow, If you had to sit in county for a day and you survived the bullpen, thats alot worse than the worst day you'll have in Camp. I was in Duluth MN. The weather sucked, and time is time. Thats it. In camp, at least by us, there was a rule to knock on the door before you go in the can. No joke. Everybody in Camp is a non violent offender. The guards, for the most part, treat it like a job. They're not going to bust your balls unless you bust thiers first. They dont want any problems. Its just a job to them.

Here's what you can expect. You report in and they put you in AD-SEG admistration segregation, for a couple of days. At that time, your alone in your room, not a cell. You get up, eat, shit and shower. Then you take tests for most of the day. Its about everything and anything you can think of. From education to interaction with other races. This is how they determine what dorm you're assigned to and what job you get ( for 17 cents an hour! ).

After that, your assigned your dorm. You bunk with anywhere from 3 to 6 guys in a room. The doors arent locked to your room at night either. The next day, you meet with your counselor and the AW (assistant warden).

After that circus, you settle in to your time. You get your phone privies. Maximum of 300 mins per month. -It will be about a week before your fist call-

You can put as much in your commons acct your first day as you want to. I put in a little over a grand, but your family and friends can put in as much as they want, whenever they want. But get it as close to zero as you can when you leave because they confiscate it towards your restitution when you leave.

A typical day? Whatever you dorm is in line for chow, you go. Lets say you get up at 6am. Wash up, go to chow, then you got about 2 hours to kill before work. (work is Tuesday through Friday) You get done with work, for me I started at 8 and was done by 10:30 or 11:00, then it was lunch. Your day gets long from there.
I worked out, went for a walk around the camp (NO, there are no fences) and took a nap. Had dinner around 5 or 5:30 then watched a movie in the theater or in the summer, just bummed around with a few of my pals. Night time was playing cards, sneaking a few smokes, and hoping the sun comes up so I know another day passed.

Things you will learn:

In camp, you will NEVER feel threatened. EVER
You will be bored out of your mind.
Most of the time, you'll think about your restitution.
You will most definateley be trying to get into RDAP - look it up
You'll learn how to get along just fine, unless your a jagoff, that will make your time alot longer.
DO NOT SHOW ANY FEAR. 2 reasons, 1- some of theese pussies who wrote things in here are right, people smell fear and you will be taken advantage of.
2 THERE'S NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF IN CAMP. NOTHING.

I had the advantage of knowing a few of the guys up there from my nieghborhood already so I had a real easy transition. I suppose your going in naked by the way you're talking. So what? As I said, guys will be coming up to you, figure who's not an asshole and go from there.
I did. I got extra pillows, cheaper smokes, extra food, privies on the bocce court, etc etc.
Lets say you got no one. There are plenty of guys just like that. The worst thing that happens is you sit in the back of the movie house, your last in the gym, no extra pillows, and your boots arent the ones with the extra padding in the soles.

Dont sweat it. Just dont be a bitch. Before you know it, you'll be going around the merry go round. (when youre a week short) But youll hear all about it from someone fast.

After everyone was saying how bad the winters were up there - and they were brutal - I reached out and got transfered to S and R. Where did you do your time, Fed or State ?

Me too. I'm from Chicago. I did my first stint in Vandalia. Its pretty close to the Kentucky border. Its a medium so it wasnt all that bad. No A/C so in the summer it was pretty bad, but the winters was ok. I know what you mean about the bitches in Fed. In state, everybody knew who were the snitches and stayed away from them. In fed, when I got into RDAP, it was a total joke. We had to roll on someone all the time, otherwise you dont get the nod. We would all talk about who was going to rat out who the day before. Like, "I seen Joe take packets of sugar to his dorm" or "I know that Bob is cooking is his dorm". What a bunch of bullshit!
Its too bad that kid who's scared of his time never logged back in. Like you said, Camp is the easiest time you can do.

Congrats on your sobriety. Im glad your in a place where your comfortable. My bits were'nt for any drug charges or alchohol related. I was told about RDAP while I was in state, so when I pled out, I made up some bullshit about my drinking problems and made sure I dropped hot when I reported ( that wasnt real tough ).
Your right about the bitches in that program too. I like the pool you had going up there but we did it a little different. We would bank 5 stamps each on who would roll when it wasnt thier turn. LOL I went through it 4 years ago, and I would guess its a litle different at each Pen, but I do remember the "outdoor therapy". It was such nonsense !! The counselors would talk about how important it was to do because we were to break up into smaller group and talk about what jagoff's we were. But, when it was cold or raining, it somehow got forgotten. What a joke.
Still, looking back, I would much rather do Camp than state any time. Seeing all those guys mixed in like pigs in a sty had to be brutal. At least I had a couple of friends in state where we got to bunk together and nobody fucked with us.
