Places like Best Buy accept old computers for free and they'll recycle them for you. Just ensure you remove you old hard drive and smash it into bits with a big ol' hammer before dropping the rest off.

I can't imagine a person willing to pay much above the shipping costs for a 6-year old computer nowadays.

Each computer is worth around $10 to $14 each. Now its not worth it to only send one but if you go and get a few of them and ship them all at once its very much worth it. IF you get to the point where you are shipping by pallets we will cover the freight costs as we move freight all over the USA and will just have our broker pick it up and get it moved.

Yes, I have done this several times, taken electronics to Best Buy for free recycle.

You don't need to smash the old drives, just install Ubuntu on your old computers. Linux does an awesome job of genuinely deleting Windows, not just setting the values at zero.

If I had something on a disk drive that I REALLY didn't want someone else to ever EVER have a chance to see I would not rely on Ubuntu to erase it; I would minimally require a proven standalone overwriter that sector by sector multiple-overwrites the entire drive (the problem with this is there could be no-longer-accessible sectors - or, minimally, data regions - on many hard drives that are hidden even from such a program - and who KNOWS what old partial-data could be lurking there).

But smashing the drives is a lot more guaranteed and a lot more fun.

[actually, I would take the drives apart, save the cool parts like the screws, remove the platters, and individually use ex-speaker magnets as well as, say, a propane torch on their surfaces...THEN bend them into 'U's or cut them into pieces with shears or by bending. We're talking thorough here...]

Years ago my wife bought an old Apple at a church sale. It was full of old black and white porno pics. Whoever donated had excellent taste.
