How about the good old days when you could just shop at a grocery store without having to join a club that gave you better prices if you used a "bonus card". Even restaurant chains are using them any more.

Back when I was in high school Abercrombie and Fitch catalogs were the soft porn of the day. They've really toned down their marketing in the past 10 years.

when people smoked like chimneys everywhere including on the airplanes.

Talk about airplanes way back when...the stewardesses were pretty, and helpful. Flying was an event that people often got dressed up for, and the food was decent (still not great but edible).

There were no little red brake lights on the top part of cars' backsides.

PG-13 didn't exist - Poltergeist and Gremlins was PG.

Life before ATM's; racing to your local bank branch like Northern Virginia Bank to withdraw cash before the bank closed on Friday - or later, Saturday morning.

Paying with a "charge card" required that the cashier would first look up your credit card number in a mini phonebook-like book to check your number against the book's stolen/invalid list. Then, the cashier would drop your charge card into a hand-operated machine with carbon atop and would slide the machine handle over your card.

Fax paper on rolls.

Sending your essay exams and/or resume to a typist.

Computer cards for data entry.

Mimeograph/purple school worksheets and the smell of "just run off" warm ink.

Legally drinking age of 18.

Smoking in the school-authorized smoking lounge in Fairfax County High Schools.

I can remember being a kid and going to the grocery store with my parents. Many of the stores had a soda bottle return area where you dropped your 6 packs of bottles off for the deposit. I remember one of them was a hole in a wall with this roller conveyer belt and you would shove the bottles down the chute. My brother and I used to take single bottles and pitch them inside so they would bust on the floor. After that, we would head to the front of the store and play elevator action for a half hour or so while my parents finished shopping.

Someone above mentioned the commodore 64, but I remember having the VIC-20 which came out before that I think. Many of the games were text based and there was one called the Count, which was about dracula. My brothers and I would play it incessantly and would always try and give it bogus commands like "fuck bed post" or "shove tree in ass".

I remember those ashtrays and butts all over the floor. I also remember being six or seven and going to the corner gas station to buy a carton of cigarettes for my dad and it was no big deal.

You are probably about my age. Do you remember these?

I remember these fuckers being everywhere...parking lots, sidewalks, gutters. No wonder they banned them.

I couldn't have been 3 years old but remember my dad having cutting edge audio equipment in our car. He loved classical music. Mom would pack some food and on a Sunday drive we would go. We would park somewhere and listen to Gershwin or something.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9687999-1.html

I also remember in the late 60's my dad and uncle hooked up a T.V. in one of there work trucks. They actually cut a hole in the dash and put it behind glass. Kind of like primative "Pimp My Ride" or monster garage.

Yep. They would always start double tracking. There was actually 4 lines of recording I think all on one side of the magnetic tape? Cassette weren't much better.

Remember seeing either one of these being strung out down the side of a road somewhere by a frustrated teenager after their player ate it? That was funny. By the time you noticed a serious problem going on the machine had already ate about 1/4 mile of tape.

Jeremy, Wilmer's Park brings back some memories, that place was great back in the day.

I remember taking my $1.50 in quarters and heading to the local grocery store to buy a pack of smokes out of the machine. Wonder what they did with all of those old machines.

I still have our original 8-Track/Record player from the 70's, and we still have a mother load of records and 8-Tracks (We used to have original Elvis records too, but my Uncle jacked them a while back).

I remember that we couldn't play "The Twist" when my dad was in the house because he said that "rock and roll" was horrible devil music. It was the first "rock and roll" record we got as kids.

I remember drinking an awful lot of Tang because the astronauts drank it. It was basically orange sugary Kool-Aid. Oh, yeah, we drank a lot of Kool-Aid too.

I remember my mother lighting the pilot light in the stove every time she wanted to bake something. First the gas had to be turned on, then the match lit and then poooooof! If you couldn't get the match lit (bad matches back then), you had to quick try another match and hope you didn't blow up the kitchen.

I remember "pantsuits". I guess Hillary Clinton revived those.

I remember "hot pants". I guess Daisy Dukes came after that.

I remember the "calculator room" at my high school. I think we had two four function calculators in there (woooeee, it was a big deal). I remember using a slide rule in Chemistry class.

I remember a gas war at the gas stations in my town and gas got down to 25 cents a gallon. I also remember that you got a "gift" when you filled up your tank. My dad always picked the roll of toilet paper (arrgh) and I wanted the piggy bank or one of the cheesy "toys". Also, the gas station was full service---nobody had heard of self service yet.

I remember shag carpeting. My mom got some bright orange shag carpeting for the living room and it had to be raked with a special rake to fluff it up. I also remember "kitchen carpeting" which she had installed---a big mistake. There was also "indoor/outdoor" carpeting. Carpeting was sort of a big deal.

Another big thing was home permanents for your hair. I think the brand was called "Tony" or something like that. We also had a home hair dryer with a plastic cap and a hose and it made a lot of noise. Oh, yes, you set your hair with rollers and then sat under that thing. Once my sister gave my brother a "permanent" so that she could make his hair into an "afro". He had the best white "afro" ever. He went to church like that and she sat next to him with a floppy hippie hat so that he wouldn't feel so dumb.

Enough. Thanks for the memories.

Mortal Kombat was all the rage. We had an SNES, though, so we got stuck with the 'no blood' version of the game. I've always been a Nintendo man. Nothing beats a good Zelda.

Hah! I used to do that. You had to push the play and record button at the same time on those pieces of shit. Sometimes I would screw up and record over a song I liked. Then they came out with the boom boxes where you could record songs directly from the radio without the ambient noise and I thought life couldn't get any better.

Growing up, I could only afford one video game system per generation, and in the 16-bit-era that was Sega Genesis. I was always jealous of SNES owners since their versions of cross-platform games were always so much better than the Genesis versions. But the one notable exception was Mortal Kombat 1. I still remember the blood code: A-B-A-C-A-B-B.

I'M A FIVE-STAR MAN!!

I spent hours waiting for a song to play so I could record it. Bouncing back and forth between two rock stations in the early 70's usually catching my song well into the intro. But Man I remember how satisfying it was to get a good copy then try to crank it up as loud as possible on a speaker that couldn't have been 3 inches in diameter with an amp that might have thrown out 12 decibels maybe.
