Spam E-mail

Most Fairfax County computer users are affected by spam, which annoys all of us. Has anyone really developed a workable process to eliminate or "bomb" the sender. As an aside, I am on a South American spam list that spreads from country to country, although I don't speak Spanish nor Portuguese. (In most instances you can't reply to sender and if successful, you've only confirmed a good e-mail address for them to spam). Some filters work well; e.g., Google G-Mail...but the spammers still seem to follow me...

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Help me find 10 issues posted on this forum that are STRICTLY RELEVANT to Fairfax County residents ONLY! Speaking of clueless!

Almost every first reply to a post takes the topic to an alternative discussion that is BIGGER than Fairfax County...

I have a number of email addresses. One email address I use for friends only, another for business and another for junk lists.

Whenever I am asked for an email address from a site, application, etc... I always use my junk email address. I use a spam filter on my junk email account to limit the emails even more. I don't have a spam problem.

Thank you all for your input. I even extend gratitude for the repartee of the faux "Bob James." I take minor offense at this identity theft of my nom de plume. I am surprised that the author did not suggest a machete (interestingly, Spanish diminutive of macho). I hope that your displayed erudition is not a result of the Fairfax educational system--perhaps, ESL courses? Whoops, off-topic...

Received a good replication of a Bank of America alert that there was an attempt to access my account. I ALMOST bit and was saved by Securemaker which identified a false e-mail and rebooted my computer. (I surmise that the reboot was part of the protection).

In any event, someone is phisting (?) with pretty authentic looking Bank of America e-mail... looked like e-mail came through the Google G-mail system...

In any event, this attack may be larger and shotgunned throughout Internet.

[To Everyone]

for those who do not know...

Quote

Main Entry: phishing
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the practice of luring unsuspecting Internet users to a fake Web site by using authentic-looking email with the real organization's logo, in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information, or introduce a virus attack; the creation of a Web site replica for fooling unsuspecting Internet users into submitting personal or financial information or passwords
Example: 1996; as in 'fish' for users
Etymology: phish, v; phisher, n

Webster's New Millenniumâ„¢ Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v 0.9.7)

this type of phishing scam is common. some advice... if you ever get a "you must act now!" email here is a list of ways to prevent getting scammed:
  • NEVER click the link they provide, instead manually type in the name of the site and login to see if there is an issue.
  • alternatively, you can go to phishtank.com and paste in the address of the link to see if it's a phishing site.
  • i recommend you use the extension for firefox that checks with phishtank.com and will prevent you from loading such site. here is the extension.
note: if you dont use firefox for a web browser, i HIGHLY recommend you use it instead of Internet Explorer. firefox is FAR more secure than Internet Explorer.

if you ignore my advice and you get ripped off, it's an ODF.
