Thoughts on Uruguay
Date: November 04, 2010 01:05PM

When I've had friends or family travel to South America, I've always heard things like, "I'm going to Chile to hike the Andes," or, "I'm going to Rio for Carnival," or "I'm going to Peru to see the Inca ruins."

I've never heard anyone say, "I'm going to Uruguay."

These are my perceptions of Uruguay....

- It's South America's Rhode Island.

- It's next to Paraguay, where I think they have that Confederate colony.

- I think I've had some wine from there once.

- Doesn't it have a big lake there?

- This thing was shot there....

- It's name sounds kind of like "You're a Gay."

In summary, Uruguay needs to work harder.

I think Uruguay is overshadowed by Argentina. Why go to Uruguay when Argentina is right next door? The only thing good I've heard about Uruguay are the beaches and bitches of Punta del Este.

I think Obama should vacation there. Sarge can arrange the finances. Let's see... we'll need to set aside a minimum of $5,000,000,000.00 for the plane....

Lots of meat. Pig, goat, beef, fish.

Vegetarian in Uruguay = starvation.

That video is actually a documentary, rather than science fiction.

When the assembled leaders of the world were show that clip, they collectively responded with a shrug and a polyglot "Eh, it's Uruguay."

Uruguay is the Rodney Dangerfield of South America.

Not true. Chile, Argentina, and Brazil were all amazing trips. I'll also +1 you on Peru. I had more fun on my South American trips than my travels in Europe. I saw the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations special on Uruguay. It looked OK.

I knew a guy who went and loved it. It's not like an impoverished Central American country, it's closer to Argentina or Chile in class and culture. Supposed to be a higher European influence. I looked in to going to the cone of South America before, as I have a ridiculous amonut of frequent flyer miles, but the place I'd really like to see down there is Antarctica.

Pronounced yooo-a-GWY, not gay.

What does "European influence" mean?

Does this mean they act more like civilized white people instead
of the dirty fat lazy butterball spics that they actually are?

Well, South America is pretty diverse. Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru are pretty damned poor. Chileans and Argentines look down on them more than some Americans look down upon Mexicans.

WTL - I have travelled a good part of the world - not been to SAmerica yet and you're right Uruguay is often overlooked much like the Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana are.

My thoughts on Uruguay is that it's fairly cosmopolitan in the same vein as Buenos Aires, it has a small population (just off the top of my head - not looking it up) and they do okay for their lot in life. I don't think they have anything that stands out physically (i.e. gorgeous mountains or outstanding beaches) but again I could be wrong, just my perception. A place that just is.

I'm not going to dip into your ethnocentric views, but 88% of the population is of European descent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguay).

Yes. But the top three countries represented are Spain, Italy, and France. I can't believe those Nazi doctors weren't hung by their toes. I guess the locals didn't know the specifics of their evil doings.

88% European DESCENT. Descent would be the KEY word here.

But regardless of descent, if you are retarded enough to
speak Spanish and look like this :

http://www.google.com/m/search?site=images&gl=us&client=safari&source=mog&hl=en&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g3-k0d0t0&fkt=1038&fsdt=4949&q=uruguay+people#i=103

THEN YOU ARE BY DEFAULT; a *spic*.

So dip into my ethnocentric views all you like.

They aren't 'spics' since they aren't hispanic as in coming from Hispaniola. They also do not eat tacos.

Yes, walking the tour paths around the mass graves littered with bone fragments and teeth is a buzz kill. The Tuol Slang torture prison isn't a fun house either. But then there's the beautiful Mekong, the french colonial architecture, Angkor-era temples and the smiling friendly faces that deliver a unique blend of hospitality. It is a place of stunning contrasts. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

While I'm sure it's no Disney-fied experience, I suspect Uruguay would deliver similar rewarding contrasts. Not unlike Colombia, another favorite destination of mine.

I try to stay away from continents with things like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candiru

"The candiru usually targets a big fish as its host, drinking blood from its gills, but occasionally they make mistakes. This has resulted in one of the most infamous legends to emerge from the Amazon: a man urinating in the river who has a fish swim up his penis." – Jeremy Wade, biologist.

William S. Burroughs also wrote about the candiru in his novel, Naked Lunch, describing it as "a small eel-like fish or worm about one-quarter inch through and two inches long patronizing certain rivers of ill repute in the Greater Amazon Basin, will dart up your prick or your asshole or a woman's cunt faute de mieux, and hold himself there by sharp spines with precisely what motives is not known since no one has stepped forward to observe the candiru's life-cycle in situ"
